For Players on XBOX - The Shift Level function can be achieved by either pressing LB or the Right Thumbstick (depending on controller settings in-game). You can see which button it is by checking the legend for "Alternative Placement"

Left bumper plus right stick to turn on and off alternative placement. if you're holding a hammer you get a crossed magnet icon displayed. and if you're holding the hoe you get a crossed dirt hill displayed.

Thank you was about to hit every button on controller to see if shift worked....or just plug in my keyboard and hope.
I've got 500 hrs in the game and I never knew the "shift/leveling" tip. Thanks man.
The cultivator also restores sandy bottoms in the water, really nice after you've carved out sections for a dock or waterway
I've always struggled with terraforming, so it's really nice to have your fully up to date guide. Time to try again!

It took me several attempts to get it right too, so don’t feel bad lol
While a lot of us knew the basics, the details provided here make all the deference to taking our Terraforming to the next level.
Very thorough video, thank you! You blew my mind with the shift-click flatten ground hoe function for making smooth ramps. Cheers!

Yeah, I had no idea as well for a long time, but this is a game changer for terrain edits.
The ramp tip by using shift and level is super helpful. I've always tried to make ramps by walking sideways and leveling normally, which sometimes works, but the shift method looks so much cleaner. Thanks a ton! Edit: one thing that would be SO NICE would be different sizes and shapes of the hoe placement. Would love a square option, but at least letting us zoom the circle size up or down with middle mouse scroll would be super helpful to getting edges cleaned up instead of having to be super precise with the large default circle we have.

These features already exist in mods. OCDheim makes the hoe a 2x2m square which levels all 9 1m grid points and allows raising terrain in increments of .05m. Unfortunately it's not client-side-only, requiring installation on both client and server. But great for single player use. HoeRadius by aedenthorn lets you adjust size using the scroll wheel and is client-side only.

@@aaronworne9815 Was actually planning on finding this out later tonight. I'm thinking RL1/bumper or stick press while using standard function like some of the other alternate placement options.
500+ hours in Valheim and I find this very very helpful as I've never known them. Excellent content

860 hours in and i really wish, i had seen that slope part sooner, so many wasted hours trying to create a way up one of my builds until finally giving up and calling it finished... Though i think they added the shift functionality later on, though i might be wrong.
What a fantastic video, thank you for explaining each bit in clear detail and without a lot of bs filler.

You're very welcome! 😊
shift + level = mind blown!! Thanks!! I've never seen this in a vid before. Great video.
Thanks for sharing info Beeblebum! I knew most of this, but it was a good refresher and I know anyone new will find this video invaluable.
you hope it helps? well , dang! it did helped me a looooot!!! Thank you so much! I've watched a lot of vids about this but none really explained how it works specially the how to get a sharp straight edge! thank you a I hope you make a lot more vids, they're short , concise and straight to the point!
The buildmaster from NMS returns to Valheim, and he brings quality to the tenth world! Thank you, this was really helpful!
Perfect for me beginner who love to build in this game, me and my friends played a lot recently, while they busy doing the farming for ores I just simply build a simple and good houses hahahaha
Thanks Beebs I didn’t know the shift level. Definitely using that on my next build

Hey Sword! 😊 Glad to help out another veteran Viking!
Thank you algorithm! You are one of the best tutors I've seen in gaming vids, period (and I've been gaming since Pong). Helping tremendously to understand Valheim building mechanics. Liked, subbed, will binge.👍

It's absurd how much work it is to terraform in this game!

Yeah the flatten terrain feature could really use a rework. I can't imagine this awkward bumpy surface was the intended function of a move called "flatten."
I just started playing Valheim and found your videos on it. I always enjoyed your NMS tutorials as well.
I didn't know about shift-clicking on the level ground function. I can finally fix my cart roads!
Thank you for this. Even though I knew some of this having the visuals of the lines to follow has helped me a lot!
The shift level changes everything for me. Lol thanks
Thank you so much for this. You have no idea how much of a game-changer this knowledge is going to be!
Thank you for the tutorial!
As a newer player this guide is very helpful!
the shift leveling trick is mindblowing. Damn good for nothing Raven didn't tell us about that
Nice, comprehensive presentation. Thanks. I wish the devs would modify that thing where you try to straighten out a wall and it takes a big gouge out of it...

There used to be a great mechanic where you could make ground without almost any rock.. Loved that.. haha. 😄
Subbed! Lovely guides. I've played for quite a while but I learned something new in this guide as well as your basic building guide. I'll be watching them all. Thank you for these!
I do love the background music in this game
Now THIS is super well made and incredibly informative, thank you!
Thanks so very, very much for this video. It was just what I needed SO much. Had so much difficulty with levling the Ground, so I could build ❤🎉🥳💐

Excellent video @The Bee Side . Struggled with terraforming for the longest time. This helped a lot!👏👏👍
Oh, I wish I had found this last night! New player here, I was making a ramp and got the bumpy version, so in the end I put some 26° beams and roofing on top. It does work as a ramp, however the looks are not that great. Will redo it with your tips, thank you very much!
Just getting back into valheim and this was just what I needed. Great vid!
I knew almost everything except for the trick for making smooth slopes! I was struggling with that so much so thank you!
Best terraforming guide I could find so far, lots of extra bits of useful information as well! Great job!
Great guide, explained everything with clarity, thank you so much!
Super helpful! I'm really excited to use this for my builds in my next playthrough!
Thank you for showing me the [LSHIFT] option for the Hoe. Slopes were a nightmare
That was pretty much everything about terrain manipulation you need to know. nice video.
thank you so much I have just started playing and I have been struggling! This is great!
It's very handy. Thx for that video! It's really helpful
Great video and information. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing, even after 1500 hours I still struggle with the ramp building until now :) Subscribed for more helpful content :)

Thanks for the sub! 😇
This was sooo helpful. Thank you so much. I love that you can add the grass to the walls. I didn't know that. I also didn't realize you could make sharp edges other than nsew.
i've played for many hours and this was still useful
Great info and very helpful. Thank you!
Very thorough guide, great work!
I also use logs for a visual reference when building roads or paths which can then be removed or left in place for a more aesthetic look along the sides.
Great to watch and rewatch!
This is so CLEAN! Very nice
Best Bee on earth ❤️🐝
Awesome! Thanks for the well thought out video and the much needed advice on flattening.
Thank you so much for this. I was having major frustration with levelling the ground earlier.
Thank you for these tips!

This guide is fantastic. Spent a while yesterday working on digging out a tunnel under a giant rock and I was really struggling to make it look right
Very informative and well illustratdd, thank you!
AMAZING TIPS! Thanks a lot and...suscribed!
You can save stone when raising the ground by aiming at the top side and clicking once to raise the ground 8m
Thank you!!! Very Helpful

Thank you for this guide!
This was a really really good vid!:) Hope to see more :)
Really great tutorial. Thank you!
00:55 Ah, that's why that 2nd isle I built was so much lower than the main fort island I built.
I was getting SO MAD at a slope I was trying to pathen today, I ended up just carving it out with the pickaxe and building a wood stairs ramp all the way up the mountain, lol. That shift-flatten is a game changer.
THATS AMAZING i thought i wont learn nothing i dont already know but that trick with slopes!!! gamechanger
Very in depth and clear Thank you
Always failed with slopy paths, so it was with shift! Nice video!
Whoa, that shift modifier! I had no diea lol
WOW! Just wow sir. This was so wonderfully done. I'm able to follow it with only very simple amount of game knowledge. I applaud and praise this. 👏
I've always wondered how the system works, I never seemed to get the desired results, the ground would not either raise or flatten the way I wanted. I had no idea, for example how to raise it so perfectly with sharp edges because I didn't know about the directional lines correlating to it! To me it always just seemed to rise in unpredictable and misshapen manner. Thank you! :)

I had to watch the lines too when I was building a cellar. You have to orient the house to the lines if you want a nice straight cellar, you can't just build the house in any direction.
Thank you very much for the information on the channel very useful. Just starting on xbox

Many thanks thats really helpful ❤
Great guide man, thanks
Thanks, had some problems making a good incline.
Thank you, this is very helpful guide.
Very good explaining video.
Thank you for a great job.
I was getting Bob Ross vibes from this. Love it.
Thank you! Especially for the dirt ramp tutorial. WIsh I knew that sooner. My first playthrough I built away from the water. Later on I made a dock and then connected them with a stone path. The problem was my new dock was downhill from my newbshack. I couldn't figure out how to make the dirt ramps so some section just have stairs slapped it. It doesn't look horrible but definitely wasn't my original plan and I probably lost an hour or more raising and flattening terrain before I compromised with the stairs.
I play a lot of Valheim but i doesn´t know the "Shift thing" while Flating the Ground. 🤩 Really nice Valheim Terraforming Guide 👍
Amazing!! thank you!
