I backed and I can't wait for release! I'm planning to convert the 5e game I currently GM. I really hope you'll do some build videos, or maybe a general "system overview" focusing on some of the system dynamics and potential optimization angles, etc. Also, Spellblade unlocked woooo let's go!

Sorry to message here. Reckless attack says you can only use with melee WEAPON attacks and Thrown property just says you make a ranged attack with the melee Weapon, it also further says you must use strength unless it has the finesse property. So why wouldn't rage bonus damage work? Point in fact the only thrown weapon that is a ranged weapon is the dart. I could use a whole video on this lol
@JamCliche
Ай бұрын
@@fizzcannon3056so the dumb thing about 5e's design language is that it leads to a lot of these ambiguities and they don't seem to notice. A 'ranged weapon attack' and a 'melee weapon attack' are specific phrases that refer to the type of attack, even though they describe something that might sound similar to what they are. So if you are making a ranged attack with a melee weapon using strength, you are not making a 'melee weapon attack.' In non-official circles, you can laugh this off and get the bonus.
Can't wait for the manbun to evolve into the witcher hairstyle.

I’m now officially requesting that the videos with the acoustic intro be bun-Colby, and videos with the metal opening be mohawk Colby
Improved pact weapon says, “In addition, the weapon gains a +1 bonus to its attack and damage rolls, unless it is a magic weapon that already has a bonus to those rolls.” This means that magic weapons that don’t have this bonus should gain it so a weapon of warding or dragon wing bow should gain the +1 even though it is already magical
Fun fact about Improved Pact Weapon: there’s a lot of higher tier magic weapons with no numerical bonus, and on those it still gives the +1
@brannenpfister2579

Sword of Zariel is a great example of this.
I had a player ask how I instinctively "knew" everyone's to hit, AC, and saving throws etc.. and didn't know what to say except I just memorized all the rules in DnD somehow. It is only now I realize the reason for this is watching your videos religiously. Because of you and Chris, I know just about every possible combination of class/race/subclass by heart. It's hard to express how much easier this has made improvising for me. Every NPC I make up on the spot has a random build ready to go in my head. Now I just need the voice acting skills to match lol.
The baseline concept is such a good thing for new players, it honestly might be better than the "champion for beginners" idea.

Love the dc20 ad spot but would really love to see a video where you break down and analyze some of the core mechanics and their potential in what you do as an optimizer. Or in comparison to what you've seen in other games like Pathfinder?
the dc20 sponsership segment really shows how fast the funding has come. We're at almost 1.3 million now which is like 900k more than the stretchgoal Colby showed. can't wait to play it :D
I absolutely love how watching these videos has gotten me in the "character building" mindset. Seeing the curveball of warlock being thrown in, then immediately jumping to thinking "is it genie? It's got to be genie." Only to have that be the case is so satisfying.

honestly i barely see genie warlocks, i feel like a majority of the 5e playerbase focuses too much on hexblade that they forget how strong some of the other subclasses can be

Could we perhaps think about baselines for the other playstyles? Like, what’s the best nova round that can happen EVERY encounter? Or what is the most reliable tank? Support, control, like minimal expendable resources… sounds fun to me
@snowsun538
Ай бұрын
Reliable tank would be pretty cool. I'd love to see what's the best possible without abusing temp hp or healing. Reliable Nova is kinda an oxymoron but I guess you could build for the best Nova on a short rest.
The singing at the end is beautiful as always! 😫👌🎶
Our table typically runs one BIG combat once a day anyways, so Colby's builds work perfect for us!
A universal benchmark makes my engineer heart happy. Thank you captain colby
I like the happy intro music and characters that are simple to play in combat without being useless
I will say, there's a real argument at higher levels that you can switch over to a greatsword. Any time you crit, which should be fairly often, you get a bonus action attack from GWM. Any time you kill an enemy you get a bonus action attack from GWM. Also, I think there's something to be said for mixing in some stuff that you can only do once per combat (but can do every combat of every day). Like...maybe keep most of the rest of the build the same, Fighter 11, Barb 2, but change the race to bugbear, drop the warlock levels, and take 3 levels of gloomstalker. Yes, the gloomstalker additional attack is not "every round", yes the bugbear surprise attack damage is not "every round". But they are both "every combat", so even if there are 20 combats in a day, you can still do this "all day" (kind-of).
ok the Jack Black drop was just priceless! ;p
I swear I can listen you you for hours and not get bored
I love to see the Barblock get some love, and its pretty close to the character ive been running. I went zealot barb/undead warlock( grimdark campaign setting and i wanted to be as hard to kill as possible) between form of dread and AoA i rarely needed to rage and held my own with a paladin on deck. Being the guy everyone wants to be best friends with because they're terrified of what happens when hes angry is awesome
As someone who almost exclusively plays Variant Human, I appreciate how you recognize its ability to optimize a build.
I think Iron & Wine sounds warmer, but the Postal Service version serves the story of the song better - he's written a song to play on the radio after failed, frantic attempts to convey the depths of his love through an answering machine message. There's an almost manic, VERY millennial vibe of "I'm feeling a thing and no adequate medium exists yet to express it". I actually like the narrative potential of this build - it very much lends itself to heroes in the He-Man vein, where he doesn't really learn new tricks or do much more than smash stuff wearing different clothes, but his friends are so colorful and wacky that you don't even notice.
That man bun was so tight I got scared you got a buzz cut at first, can’t do this to me on a Tuesday morning man!!!
Hey man, I got this off nerdarchy a few years back. L1 barb 1. Instead of rage we are calling this battle trance, just re skinned rage. L2 fight 1 two weapon style (scimitars) L3 rogue 1 1d6 L4 barb 2 reckless attack L5 fight 2 action surge L6 barb 3 primal path (bear) L7 barb 4 A/S/I L8 barb 5 2nd attack L9 rogue 2 (this blows as a level since your bonus action is already so spoken for but it's the gate keeper for better shit) L10 fighter 3 (champion) want the crit increase, sorry L1q rogue 3 (scout) with all the speed 2d6 L12 A/S/I L13 A/S/I L14 rogue 5 3d6 L15 rogue 6 L16 rogue 7 4d6 L17 rogue 8 A/S/I This build is the dervish of the sands, or a demicyris, twin sickle sword welder that cuts through the battle field, recklessly attacking and sloughing half of all of it. Just so reliable food for thought
Colby's battle with the dragon going in focus during the outtakes always cracks me up!
I personally LOVE the manbun! Like I said before, it's only steps away from becoming a viking knot. PS: I adore this build, featuring I was just theory crafting a similar build. Thanks as always, for the fun content.
"I don't make the rules..... I just understand them" 😂😂 love you and your man bun ❤️ thanks for everything you do for our community
Sustainable damage, I'd go Wizard10/Warlock2/Ranger3. Evoker10 (add INT to cantrip damage), [Any]Warlock2 (Invocation, Agonizing Blast, add CHA to Eldritch Blast damage), Swarmkeeper3 (add 1d6 damage on ANY attack roll, cantrips count, bunch of side-benefits and utility). Sacrifice STR and CON to max out INT and CHA. Get the magic item 'Illusionist Bracers' from Ravnica, lets you repeat any action-cantrip you cast as a bonus action. Double Eldritch Blasts.
You can also get reliable advantage from an owl familiar doing help action with flyby. It's a ritual so doesn't use resources. It can come back and hide in your backpack.
I honestly can't wait to see DC20 builds on this channel. XD
Went with the DC20 starter set($145). Great deal for everything together(about $20 per book). Let this be a warning to you WotC! You can be replaced!
Lovely video and builds! Also, I'm all for the manbun, but shoutout to the editor, he's really cute.
Improved pact weapon does work on magic weapons, so long as they don’t already have a +X bonus. Like a flametongue!
When I play barbarian I use reckless attack in every single attack. Never regreted it.
I love the man-bun. You do you my friend! 😂❤
On the free feat at level one thing. I’ve never played at a table that did that, because most people think it doesn’t really give you a reason to want to play humans, and I’m inclined to agree. However my dm does do something a bit interesting where we get 2 feats or a feat and asi at level 4, the only caveat is that we can not increase our ability score by more than 2 points and can only take one half feat. So we can’t take asi and a half feat, or two half feats, but a half feat and a regular feat is ok or a asi and regular feat. I really like this ruling it allows your build to feel flexible and strong early on without having to sacrifice for flavor, and humans still get the edge to keep them viable.
Can we get a “I can only do this once” build where you stack as many one per long/short rest abilities into one character as you can?
Glad yo see the Mr Rhexx shout out!! One of my favorite channels. Doesn't seem to get mentioned enough!
I love how malleable the builds in this video are, so many options!
DC20 is already over a million dollars 🎉🎉🎉 let's go
Outtakes portion of this video is 10/10.
I love your videos, but this one is top of the line in my opinion. You took a talent, created a base build layout, and gave options to spice it up and how people can make it their own. Probably the best video out on the net anywhere. You are awesome Colby!
Nice! I'm looking forward to future videos where you can refer to doing "twice the baseline" damage.
DC20 hype! Love the video idea. Optimized baseline damage dealer? Yes please!
Glad they sent you a review copy!
Thanks for the vid Colby, Have a good one
First of all now I’m going to be humming Peaches all day, thank you. 😂 Secondly *hand raised* I always let my players apply those +1s at my table (Pact Weapon, Infusions, Forge Cleric buff etc) even to a magical weapon. I’ve never found it to be game breaking!
As a Gen Xer, 3 years before Millennial, I also agree with postal service assessment. Nothing wrong with Electro Pop.
Thanks Colby! I love this build and your new proposals too- you’re the best!
31:30 I guess the BA steady aim is giving up a possible additional attack for only *one* advantage
This build is great!! So is your man bun, don't listen to the haters!
It'd be interesting to see random classes/subclasses picked either by comments or a random generator and see how you'd mould them into a capable build. Might even learn a few new things in your discoveries!
for the build that goes to fighter 11 you can add one more extra attack by going to fighter 15 and having the samurai subclass then using the rapid strike feature when you attack recklessly and you can do it once per turn so its just as sustainable as everything else in the build
Had to go look up the Iron And Wine version since you had asked. I do appreciate the slowed down tempo, but i still gotta say Postal Service does it best! Although im happy to find this alternative option for it, all the same.
I kinda wish the other races had a "variant" choice. Other than that, eldritch knight getting the bladesinger's extra attack is a big buff, I'd say, and is very fitting. Would also be awesome to multiclass with battlesmith artificer
I really hope for some builds for DC20 from you Colby!
this video was absolutely fantastic dude, thank you!
I love this concept a lot! Maybe for nova baseline you could look at the build that does the most damage turn one throughout its career with no setup. I think you could allow expendable resources as the idea is single turn but rule out situational/roll reliant things like assassin rogue needing to attack surprised enemies. Would love to see that for nova build!
'cough' DC20 allows you to take advantage anytime you want 'cough'
I was just looking into this and then this video pops into my feed thank you Colby. And yes this one time thank you KZread algorithm
The man-bun did far more consistent sustainable damage to my eyeballs than this build could ever do.

Great build/s as always Colby. The Barblock one I might just have to play as my one-shot next character. P.S. captions on my video said your name was Kobby. So I would change race to Kobold and have them use that name
I mean the upside for me is that your custum lineage/variant human builds work well at our table since everyone gets a free feat anyway.
Best version of 'Such Great Heights'?? ... Streetlight Manifesto
The other sustained DPR builds on the channel can only use that sustained DPR for about 12 turns
@DnDDeepDive
Ай бұрын
Hm. A lot of 'em can only sustain it for a minute a day or so, yeah, if they're using their highest level spell slot, but Warlocks can go a couple times per short rest and there are plenty of builds that are a little less resource-intensive. Just not to this level :).
Find yourself a Displacement Cloak and then you never need to think about Reckless. You are just always Reckless attacking lol
Comment for support!
Thanks Colby
I know you assume that this is an "I can do it the whole day" concept, but I think this build has a lot of options during a combat round - especially the second version. You can use an eldritch blast or weapon from distance, and in melee decide if you go Rage, do a burst with Second Wind and if you decide for maneuver - get that too. You can both tank with good HP and AC, and go for damage. Both Reckless Attack and -5 to hit are also a gamble and there will be times you will switch it off. Lots of options and decisions during combat - and there are also friendly casters who can add something to the table. This build is just not that complicated in most fights - and that is good. It is better to have options and not use them than to be without any.
I think I have the same exact shirt you are wearing!
I've only listened to/read the pitch so far and I'm hooked and making this my next character if I ever actually play a game
The second build is very much the route I was thinking initially, it is hard to argue against extra extra attacks when you want to have true limited resource free sustained damage. Though the reliance on Reckless to me is a bit off for 'doing it all day' as it does mean you will wind up dead, where ranged specialist with the ability to survive in melee if you can't avoid it is a bit more inline with 'do this all day' to me.
Great DC20 summary!
Reckless attack is hard to argue with if damage is all you care about. However surviving long enough to call that 'can do this all day' with reckless... Which is where warlock with improved EB is a good choice - staying at range (potentially very very long range) and pushing the targets further away is a good survival tactic - much more likely to last all day if you don't go and die... Potentially that same argument could make a Shadow Monk the choice to be - shadow monk getting the resource free teleport between shadows and gaining advantage on the first melee hit afterwards all the time would be another great method for can do this all day - and have lowest risk of taking hits back I can think off - so if the argument is 'can do this all day' in a real all day fight, day in day out - say defending Helms Deep they could be considered the winner - pop between shadows and use the bow or your fists depending on if you are likely to take any hits back, use that huge movement speed and terrain traversal to be a real pain to catch... The damage number a round won't be as spectacular as the reckless barbarian with great weapon mastery, but that barbarian is dead in a few mins of sustained combat, the warlock will probably get caught up to eventually but last a few more mins, the shadow monk or perhaps a rouge build will just keep dissapearing and whittling the targets down, might take them an hour to do as much as the Barbarian did before they died, but they have probably a few days of trickery before the points of Exhaustion build up...
Remarkable recovery + periapt of wound closure + fighter (champion) 18. You really CAN do this all day!
Nice work on the build and thanks for sharing your knowledge!
*Raises hand - it is called 'improved pact weapon' seems only fair for it to actually improve your pact weapon, even if its already magic despite what the invocation says - otherwise its a really terrible invocation quite early on in the game, unless perhaps you are a two weapon fighter, as then you can have only one expensive/rare magic weapon and still cast your spells through the summoned one.

to be fair there are some high rarity magic weapons without boni to hit and damage, so in this case, improved pact weapon would still work
Our Barb just got a DM invented weapon that shoehorned him into Warlock for Pact of the Blade (he's a new player, so wouldn't have anyway) but the weapon he will get next level when he finally picks up the pact, he gets a +3 weapon that lets him use his warlock spell slots while raging for extra damage. Good compromise and the DM rolled it into the lore for the campaign. I thought it was great.
