To be able reproduce the harmonies like that live is outstanding. The use of four quality voices was their superpower.

One of the most talented bands of the History, because the four members could sing as soliost, play an instrument, make harmonies and write songs. On a very few bands all the members are so well scored.

I think this is the last time Susanna Hoffs tried to belt that "flame" note at the end. From this point on they changed the melody so she now goes lower rather than singing the climax of the song! It's a shame- if she could do it once in the studio, she can do it again. It's the amazing note that everyone is waiting to hear and she cops out!

They are forever a class act ... and made enduring classics. One of the greatest bands ever.

although Susanna Hoffs carries the distinctive vocals of The Bangles (and i love her voice), my two favourite songs of theirs are when two other members of the band take to lead vocals: 'Be With You' and 'Following'.

She went sharp at one point. But the recording of this is so good. Susanna Hoffs performance of eternal flame on studio really makes me think she is the best singer out there

Many mention that high note at the end where Susanna really has to belt it out. I think that in her range of voice, I've always found that note to be really forced and she´d have to go falsetto in order to make it consistently. That would take the climactic feeling out of it. The truth is, I prefer that lower finish that she does afterwards. It sounds romantic and not forced. Maybe Mariah Carey could do it, but Susanna can't. That doesn't make her any less of my favorite singer. Her voice has an enchanting quality to it, a little girly, a little cute and sweet, sometimes raspy, and always sexy. She may not have the range of other singers, but her quality is beautiful. She just has to always choose carefully the songs she interprets. And I love Debbi's rendition of "Be With You". Susanne would be the first to say that she wasn't THE lead singer, there were four lead singers. And the rest would create some of the best harmony accompaniment of the 80s. God bless Michael, Vicki, Debbi, and Susanna, although Susanna will always be my "Eternal Crush".

That high note is the most memorable part of the song. It has to be there in my opinion and in full voice, not falsetto. Around 2010, they lowered the key of the song again and she managed to pull it off quite well : kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4SazNKTZdurgMY.html

@@evaebrard I respectfully disagree. When Susanna sings it with acoustic accompaniment, I like the low ending. In the more complete Bangle version she ended on a high D (in the original G major version). In the acoustic she would end it on G. I believe the acoustic version has to be more softer, and less climactic. But, that's just my personal taste. And believe me, when we get older, we all have to go a little more "falsetto".

danielaelmi, they performed on several awards shows in 87. I remember off hand the "VMA's" (video music awards) hosted by Casey Casem. They performed "walking down your st" and also won an award. I remember some international music awards show they did that year too.Run DMC introduced them and they sang an awesome live version of "walk like an Egyptian" where at the end, they literally played themselves off the stage. That was cool.

An all girl band that play their own instruments rare 2 c that not many girl groups can boast that kudos 2 them!! @ 1 time the Bangles were hugely popular and didnt just rely on their beauty and sex appeal

Well my brain is smallish and 30ish, so sometimes it takes a bit for it all to come back. That internation awards show that I was referring to where they did "Egyptian" was called "the world music awards". I have all this on vhs, but I'm too lazy to go find it all.

I wonder if the foldback (the playback of their own voice that the singer hears) was too low, as often this means the singer ends up singing louder to hear themselves. That might be why she was belting out where she doesn't normally.

Has it ever been discussed whether Debbi Peterson (drummer/vox) is really Christine McVie's (Fleetwood Mac) sister/daughter? It seems conceivable to me, based on looks and voice! Even her "real" sister Vicki could pass as closely related to Christine, so what is going on???
