You discover a new species of succulent. It’s composed of two tiny butt cheeks. What do you call it? BABY BUM. And there’s really no possible alternative, because this is Mind Blow.
An array of 100 robotic muscles that can flex 50 times per second is like a giant fluid trampoline with haptic response that can move and sort objects and also generate images. It’s like a waterbed mixed with a computer. What more could you need?
We talk a lot about AI in art, but we’re making fantastic progress in using AI to fuel neural bypass connections -- like an electronic brain-body-spinal cord bridge that has brought back movement and sensation in the limbs of a man with quadriplegia.
A full decade ago, Mind Blow highlighted the weirdly anti-bacterial wings of the clanger cicada. By analyzing the nanostructure of the wings, we finally know how the nanopillars on the wings kill bacteria and clean the surface -- and it has tremendous implications for sanitizing the surfaces of medical devices.
A 600-pound asteroid is coming directly for your head… sort of. It’s 13 million miles away, which means it’s classified as a “potentially hazardous asteroid,” and it’s tracked twice a day with a 3,200 megapixel camera. They say you never hear the one that gets you.
Spiders are incredible at pulling moisture from the air, and they do it by constructing webs on which droplets collect easily and efficiently. Replicating their process allows water collection to happen without expending energy. Science smarter, not harder.
What if tattoos could be functional instead of purely aesthetic? Nanotech’s got it covered, starting with individual cells. 3-D bioprinting technology can place a flexible tattoo that functions as a data collection and warning system for the body.
40 years ago we discovered fantastic fossils of the immortal jellyfish… and no one bothered to look at them until now, because sometimes science news takes a couple generations to develop. But the Canadian fossils are so detailed that some even reveal an animal’s last meal. They show that jellyfish as we know them today are even older than we thought -- but they’re still an aquatic whippersnapper compared to the sea sponge.

Thank you for hosting Mind Blow again after so many years!!! Some side notes: Where as having rapidly changing content, barebly readable subtiltes, shouting in the mic and adding sound effects, like the camera snap sound, works great on platforms like TikTok to target people with attention deficit hyperactivity, it certainly only disrupts user's attention here. Unlike meaningless, uncreative and contentless TikTok videos, your videos actually serve informative content to a audiences already highly interested in learning about new things anyways. So in this case it works the opposite, as it's highly distractive, making it hard to focus on the information shared. Furthermore, the music and content order you used to have back then was so unique, it was obvious to viewers immediately, that they were watching a Vsauce2 Mind Blow video at the moment and you could even tell how far the timeline has progressed, simply by the music used at certain timestamps, transitions spoken and amount of detail served. Please get back to the old Mind Blow style, because in this video it was hard to focus on the information. :)

I don't feel the same. I actually tend to really dislike over edited content & the like, but for a short format that quickly changes from 1 topic to the next, I find the way this video's done to be very engaging. For this, I want quick, I want edits. As a counter example, if I'm watching a documentary, I want something quite the opposite.

  • @Birderino

@@nathanpollard1223 interesting counter opinion. Exactly what you describe is what I feel in this video. It's too overedited with the camera snap sound, the extremely aggressive subtitles placed right in the middle of the screen with just a couple of words rather than a full sentence and the rather hectic overall presentation. The old videos 10 years ago weren't like that in my opinion, I even rewatched some of them to figur out whether I have changed or the content presentation has changed

The western cape is not unique due to having low rainfall. In fact many of the unique plants thrive in relatively high rainfall. It is unique because it has a different weather pattern from much of the rest of Southern Africa with most of the rain in the winter. It is true that as you go inland it gets drier and drier but that trend continues all the way to the Kalahari and is hardly unique to the western cape. A variety of soils and steep mountains providing isolated biomes also play a big part in the diversity of the plants. Fynbos, a vegetation type that covers much of the region is also unusual in the lack of trees, partly due to the weather pattern leading to summer fires and probably also related to soil, wind and water availability.

My RCA xl100 quit working about 5 years ago and I finally gave up on it and throw it in the trash. It was bought new in 1975, set in my bedroom on a dresser as a child, carried out of the house when I left home as a teenager stuck in the closet once flat screens and fancy TVs came along, pulled back out and used once I had divorced and started living in an apartment, attached to a digital antenna, and after 50+ years it finally gave up and became Landfill material. Probably one of the best investments my parents ever made.

@@matthall2465oh my, what a thought provoking question. that is so hard to answer, most memorable would probably be the 2am weekend reruns of old 3 stooges comedy shorts, not because of the tv or the programming so much as the times lot and everyone else trying to sleep caused my parents to tell me to turn it off and go to bed. Probably the most important things I watched on it was the news of Ronald Regan being shot, or possibly John Lennon's death. Space Shuttle Flights and tragedies, there has been so much its hard to pick just one event or show. It definitely supplied some memories over the years.
