HUGE CORRECTION: I accidentally labeled the game Celeste as Dead Cells in my footage. To clear up any confusion, Celeste is the game whose main character has flaming red hair, and Dead Cell's main character has a flaming red head. Celeste is a 2018 platform game developed and published by indie studio Maddy Makes Games. The player controls Madeline, a young trans woman with anxiety and depression who aims to climb Celeste Mountain. During her climb, she encounters several characters, including a personification of her self-doubt known to the community as Badeline, only ever referred to in-game as a "Part of You," who attempts to stop her from climbing the mountain. Dead Cells is a 2018 roguelike-Metroidvania game developed and published by Motion Twin. In the game, the player takes the role of an amorphous creature called the Prisoner. As the Prisoner, the player must fight their way out of a diseased island in order to slay the island's King.

I was one to buy on june 2022, cancelled around november and with a heavy heart because I knew it would be a good product, but I also wanted to actually play and not have to wait a year for the device. It was around this time I got to know the gpd win 4 and canceled my loki max for one. I`m glad I did it because I am already playing on my device for months and it has been a blast. I don`t feel enraged that the device took this long to be on youtuber`s hands, let alone to the people that ordered it... it is more like a bit sad for the late arrival. It had so much potential arriving back then...

As always thank you for the detailed reviews. Im glad I didnt decide to down payment this one too... I still have my regular pro odin (as I almost got the gpd win 4 earlier this year). I'm just trying to patiently wait till they(anyone ayn, gpd, etc...), come out with a handheld with a slide out keyboard, that's also thin(ner), less than(or equal to) 5inches screen wise, and can play ps3 emulation. That'll be my personal sweet spot! 😊

I have an Ally, but I'm still looking forward to the Loki due to its size. Both the Steam Deck and the Ally are too big for my travel bag, but the Loki should be able to fit right in. So I think the Loki still has a place in the market for that reason, if nothing else.

Agreed, love my Deck but it's only barely portable in my opinion. I have a back and front super slim case for it to minimize additional bulk while still protecting it and it's still enormous and heavy. I'm eyeing Loki for the closer-to-Switch size.

I picked the loki over the ally for the sole fact for form factor. in truth it really does depend on what you are looking for in the device and why you would buy it. For anyone trying to get into the space of PC handhelds id actually point to them to the base model steam deck. once you go further up its really priorities what makes people buy certain devices. steam deck was too bulky and the ally, not as big, was still too bulky for me. when I was deciding it was between the loki and ayaneo air plus and what gave the loki the edge to me was the V shape control layout. Im paying 700 to get away from my gaming PC and just relax in bed before going to sleep for a short game session. before all this, I played a lot of monster hunter rise in bed with my switch oled, but I'm locked into the ecosystem and wanted to branch out

I really like the form factor of this device as I personally feel that the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally are a bit too large for a dedicated handheld device. The price is certainly a real bummer but honestly the biggest bummer to me about all of these devices is that they don't have the option to run on Steam OS. Because of this, the Steam Deck is still a fantastic option despite being quite a bit older than all of these other Windows devices and I feel like whenever Valve launches their next Steam Deck it's going to kind of blow all of these Windows handhelds away even if it's using a similar chipset.

Yes, I hope Valve’s next handheld device will be lighter, have better ergonomics, better screen, better battery efficiency, more stable firmware and better game support overall which can make it a strong contender against other handhelds as well as consoles with inferior backwards compatibility support. Valve just have to wait and see what Nintendo does first before they can make a move… My only fear is that the console makers manages to scares Valve enough into preventing emulation on it.

I got the Loki with the 6600u and a ROG Ally and I prefer the Loki even though it has a lower level CPU. The Loki is more comfortable to hold it feels heavy and the plastic feels higher quality. The smaller screen isn't that noticeable and it an play all the games the Ally can but at lower settings but still look amazing.. The hot key button combos on the Loki are great for easy switching from gamepad to mouse mode. Don't gimp it with TDP settings none of these handhelds have good battery life no matter what you do. There is one setting to change is fan speed the Loki is loud at auto and is overkill. I set it to 40% and it keeps it cool enough. If you want to change the TDP I set mine to 20 ish and its fine I play Gamez at low settings I prefer performance and the quality is still good. You can get the Loki Max 6800u for $550 which is a steal. I got my Loki in 2 weeks when I bought mine in September from the Ayn website.

Use the Render scale setting for God of War. I set it to 60% on my GPD Win 4 and played through the entire game with most settings set to original and framerate locked at 40fps. I was able to set the TDP low enough to get 2 hours of battery. The Loki Max was at the top of my list when I started looking for a Windows Handheld. I have a Odin Pro and loved it a lot but the Loki took so long to come out that I looked elsewhere and found the GPD Win 4 that has some features I really wanted.

Good review. I agree that the loki max is late to the show. Seems you have forgotten about the Aya Neo Geek 1S. It is also now at 700$, with the 7840u. Right now, I think it is a better deal than the Rog Ally. But in a month or two, that won’t be the case. But for now, the Geek 1S deal is really good. Same thing for the AokzoeA1pro you reviewed a while back. At 800$, it was a fantastic deal, better than the Ally in my opinion. But now that the campaign for the early bird prices has ended, it isn’t. Onex player is due to release the Onexfly with 7840u and 120hz screen and much more. If the price is good then it would be better than the Ally. The advantage the Ally has is that it is readily available and the price doesn’t change

I was one in the stack for the Ryzen 5 version because of the intended use case (Genshin Impact at the time, now adding in Honkai Star Rail, plus visual novels) - but the delays took so long to materialize in a shippable product that it's coming out after something that's faster than it, plus some extra features. And that's after picking up a ROG Ally launch evening and getting it setup with no unexpected headaches (knowing how Windows works and where it.. doesn't really lets you get around issues before they're issues). That might be why the software is still a bit undercooked, they saw what was coming and just pressed the big "SHIP IT" button..

As far as I can tell it should have the same hardware otherwise but without a comparable 6600U handheld I'm curious how much the chipset will matter and even more so, how much the 8gb of RAM will affect what will play. edit- And to be honest, even more so... for my GPD Win 4 I have an Auto TDP program. I usually have it set to 6w when I'm in Windows but before I start a game I start the Auto TDP mode that will change the cpu and gpu frequency automatically to match the framerate I want. It does that on the fly constantly as well so if I'm in a place in a game that has less stuff to render, it will lower the clock speed and save power so battery last even longer than if you just set a constant TDP. It's really worth taking the couple seconds needed to change TDP just so you can keep battery life decent.

With an Auto TDP program it would be even better. I have one for my GPD Win 4 and games that used to drain my battery in 1 hour can now last 1 hour and 45 min with the exact same performance. Games that I can get 2 hours normally can get 2 and a half hour with Auto TDP. Basically the program will lower the cpu and gpu frequency on the fly to match the framerate you want. You reach a place that has less stuff to render, drops the frequency, cleared all the enemies in an area so less power needed? drop the frequency, loading screen? drops the frequency. Makes a huge difference when all added up over 2 hours.

For anyone who has a solution to an issue I've been dealing recently with the Loki Max: For some reason, I found out today that the trigger buttons are not being recognized at all. All the other buttons work fine (face buttons, d-pad, etc.) yet for some reason the triggers are not being detected even though both drivers and windows updates are up to date. I've barely used my Loki Max and i've kept it inside its' case most of time. I'm not sure if this is a Windows 11 or a drivers issue but it's been very frustrating.

Honestly, with all these devices I feel I can afford to wait another year or two. Based on improvements over time, I’m sure there will be another device with twice the power and performance and maybe even a better battery. Not sure, but I can afford to wait and see. For the time being, I’m good with my Odin and switch.

That sounds a little bit of a waste of money. Could've just used your phone plus a telescopic controller. There's few points to be made and all. But if you are definitely trying to save money then you would've just stick with switch for emulation and phone for the other.

I mean it looks amazing but the slow rollout on another ayn product hurt it this time. With the odin there was nothing at the price to performance level so it did well, but that was on Android... Ayn jumped into a market that they were too slow to keep up with the 6800u handhelds. Some companies are even starting to produce 7840u handhelds while ayn is stuck holding the bag trying to get out this product... Love the looks of the odin and the loki but i don't want to be sitting waiting for a year with a 700 dollar hole in my pocket when i can go to best buy and pick up a rog ally or order another 6800u handheld online and get it delivered in significantly less time...

I pre-ordered a year ago and unless you are a big KZreadr the Customer service kinda sucks. I just sent them an email asking what was going on and all they could tell me is I was.part of a later batch of Loki's. I pre-ordered it June 2 2022. Other than that I love my Odin and I am looking forward to 2030 when mine finally arrives. I love their quality, but they need to work on their communication big time. My channel is about 11k subs and I am currently switching my focus to these handhelds(I have way too many😂). Part of my review on these will be shipping times and customer service. Seems Ayn is a small company, but they need to figure this out. At this point the chipset went from being top end to older. By the time.its out there it will be $700 for last.years chip. Bottom line is this will hurt their sales. I paid $650, due to me buying the Odin before. I don't mind waiting but a year is ridiculous. Especially because I am working on a video of my favorite handhelds and due to it's late arrival(whenever that is) It won't make the cut.

I get great performance at low TDP but I use the renderscale stuff at 60%. I may test it out tomorrow. Turn off renderscale and see if I need 25w to reach 30fps.

Let me start by saying this first, I stay in a country where the steam deck is only now available for pre-order, but that ship has long sailed for me, regardless of how everyone is ranting and raving about the deck and the amazing community support I do not consider buying it period, just my personal preference. Nothing wrong with the deck though. Secondly, all I'm going to say is a lesson well learned, I'm no longer supporting Kickstarter campaigns due to FoMo, I paid full price for my Loki Max and kept my fingers crossed unfortunately, all that was for naught. For the life of me, I do not know why I did not cancel my order with every delay that was announced by AYN. So, at this point, I'm extremely conflicted given that the new Phoenix Point APU is here. I've decided to skip all Zen4 APU handhelds this year and plan on selling my Loki Max, save some money then wait for AMD's next generation of Zen5 handhelds from reliable manufacturers. Oh well at least I still have my trusted PS Vita (long live the Vita)

I wish you had covered it's video-out capabilities here. I really like hybrid handhelds, and I'd like to see what that looks like, how easy it is to handle. Like, Switch is easiest of all of them (you dock it, it's on the TV, you're done fiddling with things). With the Odin, I have to try and sync up a controller, and then I have to try and dock it, and then I usually still have to do something. It's nice, but I wish it was more smooth.

If I remember correctly, Android devices need to restart when they get video out connected. For Windows it's easy. I do it with my GPD Win 4 with a dock. I plug it on the dock and it automatically output video.

@@chamoo232 Ah, that explains it. I almost always dock it. I have the HDMI-out cord, but I think I've used it only once... Overall? If the latency for wireless controllers was better with the Odin, I think I'd play it far more than a I do. I love trying to stream my Xbox to it to play those games portably, but I also really like the idea of being able to set it up on the living room to remotely use my Xbox from my room out there. There's just too many sources of input-latency: the streaming itself, and then the bluetooth controller latency with Odin's. I've tried the 8bitdo adaptor, and it helps, but it feels clunky to need it.

  • @chamoo232

    @chamoo232

@@jessicastoker8932 I had programs on my Odin to stream my PS4 to it and Steam Link allows the same from my PC but I also barely used it because of the lag. With my GPD Win 4 it's just perfect. Playing games natively is so much better. The controls on the device itself are detected as an xbox360 controller. I think the Odin has some kind of interpreter program built in that converts the button's input to something Android can work with and that's one of the cause of input delay. Even if you play emulators directly on the Odin it still has input delay so if you add streaming on top of that it becomes really noticeable.

I think Ayn made a mistake with the Loki. The Odin was, and still is, something very special: a ~$200 device with fantastic performance, a great screen/battery, and best WiFi. I think it's basically best-in-class for the "B-Tier" handhelds at such a price. Competing in the "A-Tier" when the Steam Deck and ROG Ally have huge corporate funding / ability to operate on low margins I feel like just lands the Loki lost somewhere amidst the 6,000 AyaNeo models that get released every week. If you buy the Steam Deck or ROG Ally you also get great customer support, warranties that are fulfilled fast when fixes are needed, and constant new rollouts of tools / software upgrades. Until one of these A-Tier devices meaningfully beats the Steam Deck in some way (maybe double the battery life or better cooling/fans, etc.), I just don't know who these devices are for. I'm a very proud supporter of the Odin though!
