This 1965 version of the opening and closing theme song is the absolute best. Diana Rigg was so cool and stylish.

Laurie Johnson got the mood, style and meaning just right. For me, this says '60's style' as much [or more], than any pop/chart material of the era.

My favourite theme tune of all time. I never like to listen to the closing theme though because it meant that I wouldn't be seeing Emma and Steed for a whole week!

My opinion this was the best of all the theme music of all the Avengers opening-closings. The lead in with what I assume is some kind of piano along with the deep sounds of the horns were excellent, particularly in the end scenes of the black and white versions when Steed and Emma would be riding off home and the piano in the background already leading into the ending theme, which was the better longer version than the opening.

One of the most memorable themes in TV history. A perfect match for the drama of the series.

Oh memories! As a young girl just loved the theme tune & Emma & Stead. Remember arguing with my brother over who would get the portable black & white TV! I too didn't always understand the plot but loved it still & the rapport between the two of them. Few modern dramas come close. Thanks Emma. X

I had been building Crystal radios as a 10 year old kid. And then neighbors gave me an antique Zenith Transoceanic shortwave table model radio. This must have been in about 1964 or 1965. We had already seen the Beatles first appear on The Ed Sullivan Show on that February 1964 evening. I was nine and a half years old at that point. That was our first introduction to British entertainment and who could not forget it? Then on this shortwave radio one night I decided to play around and see what I could tune in from across the world. Most of the stations were in foreign languages that I could not understand. Until I picked up these very astute British gentleman speaking about the Americans. They were discussing our hippie generation evolving and it was fascinating when I realized that they knew more about us than we did. I soon came to understand that I had tuned into the BBC. I suddenly lost all interest in watching television in the evenings and my parents thought there was something wrong with me. It was either listening to the shortwave radio or going out and looking at the night sky with a pair of binoculars that my father had bought me as a gift because he had seen me reading my astronomy books. I was already established in school as the class artist and scientist. After recently looking into other radio history I discovered that I may have even heard Marshall McLuhan, the Canadian media specialist interviewed on the BBC one night, but I was probably too young to understand it, however what they were speaking about the effects of television on the viewer I found fascinating and did not later research until just the past few years, when I was pleasantly surprised to hear McLuhan explain, that the more intelligent people listen to the radio rather than watch TV. So one night our father had to come to my bedroom door and tell me, Mark there's going to be a new program on tonight from England. I think you would enjoy it, why don't you come out and watch it? When I saw that opening with the sophisticated theme music, and Emma Peel played by Diana Rigg in that skin tight black leather, as an 11 or 12 year old boy, I thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen on television. Years after that first season broadcast, I learned later that was actually about the fourth season, as the first three seasons were only broadcast to England with a different leading lady actress, and still in black and white, as the subsequent later seasons in 1966 through 1969 went to color production. But it didn't matter that it was originally in black and white, as there was something about the acting, the sophistication, the intelligence of John Steed and Emma Peel as a couple, but as a young boy I realized that there was something about not only an attractive woman but that she also appeared as very intelligent. I was not aware until much later that she reminded me of our mother or other aunts or cousins on our mother's side of the family. Or some girls that lived down the street from us in our neighborhood. I lost all interest in other American television from then on, and found American Television as banal and lacking in sophistication after seeing The Avengers. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIphj5iQgK6spM4.html
