If you're doing much work on VW/Audi cars, it's worth buying a decent set of triple square sockets. It's a pain trying to find the right size when you unexpectedly need one, and as you've already found out, you *will* need them!

Heh I don’t even own any Euro cars but am already familiar with triple square fasteners from watching Charles aka Humble Mechanic videos!
Great video Mike. I'd say do the 5 lug swap, it opens up a world of wheels.

100% agreed! Probably a few more "big brake" options as well.

Yup. As a MK1 VW Pickup owner with 4x100 I am thinking about going to 5x100 due to the lack of wheel options.

5x112 is the way to go on a Quattro. There are some decent options in 4x108 but it's nowhere near as versatile as 5 lug.

I don’t think it is worth doing on this car
Be aware, the rear differential of the Coupe Quattro has a different ratio then the one from the Urquattro, so you can't mix the drive train. A good break option are the Brembo brakes from a Seat Leon Cupra 2005-2012 (Serie 2), and yes, Audi just turned a front axle 180 degree and used it as a rear one.
Woohoo, an Audi video again! Glad to see you're making progress on it and that it'll be a relatively simple swap since the subframes are the same part. Also glad to see you brought the pointer back, I've been missing it.
I recently posted on my Facebook about your channel. Still dumbfounded how you're only at 164k followers. This is one of my favourite channels.
The hottest part of the torch is the tip of the flame, pull back from your target a little and it'll heat up quicker. Loving this build!
So glad to see an update here. Nice that Scotto had stuff laying around that you could use. Its been refreshing watching these episodes and having folks realize how interesting, unique, and fun they can be. Love it!
Your Quattro enthusiasm is infectious! Super pumped to see progress on the Audi. Another high quality video, keep killing it 🙌🏻
Super stoked to see you dealing with Scotto as that almost guarantees more collabs in the (hopefully) near future. Loving the quattro project
4x108 was common in Europe during the 80's. Ford UK was the biggest adopter of that bolt pattern. Corrina's, Capri's, Escorts, Sierras (Merkurs) and a few others all used it. New wheels can still be bought, but they are getting less common.
Since those are Girling 60 dual piston calipers that Corrado VR6 and G60 guys use then you can use Porsche Boxster 986 front calipers with mk4 VW adapters with 1/4 spacers. The VW guys use Audi TT/VW 312mm rotors. That said I'm certain you will probably come up with a more exotic combo.
@nakedbandit
Жыл бұрын
Came to say the same. The old G60 calipers are often used on Westy's as a budget big brake kit for those too, so you can usually find someone that wants them too.
@nakedbandit
Жыл бұрын
Also, the 993TT calipers with RS2 brackets and A8 rotors was a fairly well documented big brake kit on the UrS4 and UrS6 cars, so those would bolt up to the front struts from Scotto's coupe quattro.
@Zermattquattro

I installed Boxster monoblock calipers to my UR quattro along with a custom caliper mount and turned down the diameter of an A8 vented front disc as I wanted to run the original R8 Ronals alloys rather than swap out to an larger alternative alloy wheel. It was a popular brake upgrade in the UK 10 years ago.
I'm just glad to see the pointer again.
Love the Audi content, i drove a audi 80 b4 for many years back in the day. You got the forged controlarms, these are rare . Audi switched them for the stamped steel ones later because the forged ones were expensive.
Those bolts on shock absorber are in the correct way because you can adjust camber more easily.
I love watching people work on cars who don't do this for a living as the tricks I have learnt over 30 odd years make this a lot easier.
I am really liking this Audi build topic. It's fun to see the discoveries you find along the way during the "dismembering" process. I am amazed that you are able to remember how everything goes back together when you disassemble so many items all at once on a car you have not worked on before. All of your projects are interesting to me, and it is informative to see your methodical processes you follow as you move from one to another. This is by far my favorite subscription going back to the beginning of the Honda powered Ferrari build. Thanks for putting so much craftsmanship into sharing your experiences.
Regarding the Front wheel bearings and their correct removal ...Usually, you do what you did and press the Drive Flange out(away from the CV joint per se) of the bearing, then you look for a large retaining circlip on the CV joint side which you remove. Then turn the Knuckle over on the press bed, and apply force from the Brake rotor side inward(towards the CV joint per se). This is the case with most cars that I have worked on. Have a look into this if you haven't already figured out the correct removal process. Good luck!
@Keutain
Жыл бұрын
I would provide him the same advice! I'm always removing my bearing from outside to inside on all the VAG car I had to do it ;-) After removing the clip inside at the CV joint side of course!!
@danielcgomez
Жыл бұрын
@@Keutain it would make sense ...if it would come out the way he was pressing it, then what to keep the entire wheel assembly in place? Close tolerance press-fit alone? Can't have wheel assemblies parting ways with the car!
Yay the pointy finger makes an appearance! 😂
Gripper LSD from the UK for your rear LSD. I can highly recommend them as they're plate type LSD's not wishy washy torsen types. You've gotta change to 5 stud hubs from the S2 (This is 5 x 112). The axles are stronger, with appropriately larger spline sizes too.
Love to see the enthusiasm and motivation, thought we were losing you after the sema crunch. It's gotta be a nice change of pace not to have to design and fabricate some bullshit every time you turn around ha

Well put haha. It’s nice just to “work” on something.
Again, immediately had to stop what I was doing to come here. Thank you for the content, and as always, staying true to you makes it so special
After seeing the last Audi Hoonigan put out I’ve found a real love for these old Audi’s, I love this build dude, thanks for the content!
I'm jealous of the good condition of parts in California! Those parts would be considered light rust/ rust free out here in the Northeast! Good job on this Mike!
Good call on buying the special tool for the control arm bushings. It's always worth it to buy the correct tools, you save a lot of time and frustration that way.
I am very happy your working on a 1984-5 Audi Quatro AWD 5 Cylinder Turbo. "THIS WAS MY DREAM CAR WHEN I WAS 17-18 YEARS OLD!" I went looking for one in Conneticut, U.S.A. off the I 95 Intetstate Highway. I found the Dealership, but BMW Dealership stopped selling Audi😪. Instead I did find Jay Leno at the Repair Garage when he was still a machanic / slash / Comedian two days before he appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Good memories! Good info update video!
Only 1700 CQ in the US, Im glad I own one and even happier that you are diving into its parts!!
Definitely go with 5 lug, not only does it open up wheel options but it opens up brake options as well.
Love your vids man. Stoked to see this project takin off!
Just for future knowledge, the bit is a triple-square, or XZN. VW and audi love to use those, worth picking up a long-shank set from harbor freight. I still have my HF set 10 years later and they held up fine.
Those damn triple squares that still catch people off guard to this day.
Super stoked to see another Audi video!! I love those car's especially Brian Scotto's widebody Coupe Quattro and of course the late great Ken Blocks Quattro!! Hopefully this one will be right up there with those beautiful Audi's, and I'm really excited to hear the engine turning over for the first time on the channel!! I just love the sound of a Turbo 5 cylinder engine, probably why I love the group B Rally cars like I do. Love the channel man can't wait for more Audi content!!!!
I know I’m late, but I just wanted to comment to say that this is such a great series to follow for any car enthusiasts.
Love the update! A set of offset wrenches would be good to have for the control arm nuts.
about the wheel bearing removal: Im not sure about the B4, but my C4 UrS6 (very similar suspension assembly) wheel bearings had some C-clips in front of them that were so rusted in place that I could not tell that they were there. Might be worth verifying there's no C-clip so rusted in place that it just looks like a part of the knuckle.

Came here to comment that as well, I fought with this many years ago on my b4 coupe 😅
Always a good time watching your videos, love the Audi content
I've Loved these cars ever since I saw one in Road & Track as a kid in the early '80s. In the '90s, I owned an '84 Coupe GT (silver) and an '86 Coupe GT (red). Always wanted a UR Quattro Coupe, but it was always out of my price range.
These videos are always so satisfying to watch.
If you're working on anything VAG then you'll probably want to acquire a full set of triple square driver bits. They like to use those fasteners everywhere.
I’m digging this Audi build!!! Can’t wait for more
Thanks for sharing I have a 1986 4000CS Quattro so it’s a pleasure watching this! Now I’m getting scared because of the work I have to do this summer 😊! Looking forward to seeing the final project! Thanks again
Really excited for this build 👌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thank you Mike for blessing the internet with another great video. Can’t wait to watch
now this was a great episode. i want to watch so much more of this
Love Quattro content!!! Thanks Mike✔️
Not sure if its applicable for this car, but it looks like it would work. instead of getting a knuckle spreader, you can rethread the bolt from the other direction so it starts threading right away, and shove a piece of metal in the gap so the bolt cannot go into the other hole and presses the pieces apart. you really dont need more separation and this trick can be used on anything that has a smooth bore on one side and a threaded receiving end.
As others state the 5 lug swap makes the wheel choices much greater should you want off the shelf wheels or change later on. The S2 forum is a good resource. I think URS 4/6 hubs can be machines down to work. This is the best project and it will be your favorite car. Great videos and I love this project.

Reproduced S2 hubs are available. S2forum has a lot of treads for upgrading, a good advice.
My 1994 S2 was the first car I did any repair / upgrade work on myself. I must say that control arm and strut removal from the subframe off the car looks much more straightforward than doing so on axle stands in a driveway. Glad I wasn’t the only one who struggled with the control arm bushings :) you can pull them out with a home made tool consisting of threaded rod , socket, nuts, washers. Get a tough piece of rod. Rear diff options - the Audi V8 / 5000 diff internals are a direct swap. If you can find one being wrecked grab the diff (the diff housing doesn’t fit - you just want the internals) - it’s torsen the same as the centre not technically LSD but a great upgrade (and you do away with the vacuum lock thing) - my first track outing with the S2 and upgraded rear diff - overateer coming out of turn 4 at Phillip Island - one of the best things I did to the car
Stoked for the Audi build!
Mike your workmanship is outstanding keep up the good work
6:22 that's where bend ring spanners come in handy :)
Wait wait wait... you're not building your own control arms for the Audi?? Excited to see you back on the Quattro!
Loving the build.
awesome audi progress!!!
Thanks for the video!
Great progress on the Audi. The German engineering that went into these cars was amazing. Using the same sub-frame front and back was a stroke of genius. Loving the channel, keep up the great work!!!
I found your channel via DeBoss Garage, and have been hooked ever since. I watched all the 244 GTK episodes and have a great respect for your skills. I can only hope to have the shop and tools you have available. Keep up the great work and unique projects.
Great to see quattro content! I've had a similar issue with a stuck wheel bearing on an e30 before. Try an air hammer - a powerful one with make quick work of it!
Great vid Mike found your channel during the Ferrari build love the content and the video style. Cheers mate
Great stuff. I really enjoy your enthusiasm.
Great video of disassembling old parts! 👌😉
Nice episode. Did the ball joints on the toe links have a hex for an Allen key in the stud coming out of the joint? Then you can use an Allen key to hold the ball joint while you loosen with a standard box end wrench.
I am so pumped to see what comes from this build! I love the fact that you showed EVERYTHING on the Ferrari build. It made it a longer series, but I’m not gonna complain about that! In short, I hope you do the same on this one!
Really happy to see this, great content. Even more happy that you dont have to fab any control arms 🤣
Keen to see this bushing tool in operation!
No that strut bolt is not backwards. It’s “engineered” that was so that if it comes loose it will be retained instead of falling out and having a catastrophic failure. Working on it is inconvenient and probably also “engineered” that way for dealer maintenance profits!
I really enjoy you content especially enjoy your voice-over!
Great video. Gotta say most of those bushings looked good. The oem stuff last quite a while and is very hard to find new. Porsche big blacks/reds calipers from the 928 gts or 993 turbo with a bracket is what the RS2 has and my modded UrS6.
It's funny, when you first showed that diff mount earlier in the video I thought it looked kind of like a modified part from someone who did a diff swap. Good to see Audi design guys think the same way...what if we just turned this whole thing around and welded some tabs on?
It's always a better video when the finger comes out.
I knew this was coming and I am not disappointed .
For me as a German subscriber, it´s really funny to watch all these Audi Quattro videos, having done all these revisions to my cars. The tripple star tool is called "Vielzahn Nuss" in Germany. Well it´s typical for VAG to use 3-4 different tool profiles at one place.
That carbon fibre pointer is lovely!
Love it all the best!!
I love this build
Discord gang! Love me some Audi content in the AM!
OMG the memories from pulling apart my urquattro. It's so similar!
Scott's car is so sweet. Love this build and the return of the pointer
9:15 i never heard triple star, in Spain i always heard to them as multiface, 12 point or XZN (multicara,12 puntas ,XZN) its a must in the tool kit for all VW group.
Oh I cant wait to this finished and ripping through the dirt
Ah, you've finally been introduced to the beauty of triple squares. They're insanely hard to strip compared to Allen bolts, so much better.
I can’t believe you’ve never seen/used a triple square (star) before! I impact them all the time. As long as it’s fully seated, they don’t strip too often.
I love these Audi Quattros and certainly this build. I can't wait to see exactly how this build will turn out. 100% 5 lug swap to allow RS2 components, why is this even a question? It will allow you to run a lot of Porsche parts since the RS2 was developed with Porsche.

RS2 uses a Porsche pcd. . . So you would need RS2 parts not S2.

Porsche PCD of 5x130 was my comment.
Keep up the awesome work Mike! Super excited for this build. Are your boots Red Wing Moc Toes?
Great video, really excited about this build! Try welding the inner surface of the stuck wheel bearing, it might shrink it just enough to break loose.

That’s a great idea, hope I remember that truck one day lol
I love that over in the states 4x108 is "unique" over here in the UK it's what most older cars run so wheels are everywhere for older cars 🤣
this is amazing
Ken Block was also famously an Audi nut since childhood, Scotto didn't bring him into the fold. He had said so in at least 2 interviews that I have seen on Hoonigan's channel. NBD though and LOVE the build and story!
I love to see mechanical Conten and the manufacturing I get good good idea's from you
At 5:48...you never need any "spreader-tool" to get that apart, just remove the bolt and push on the upper part of the ball joint and it will go down. It is the bolt that runs in the groove in the ball joint that keeps it all together along with some clamping force but as long as the bolt is there it can never come loose. Also, the outer races of the wheel bearing can be a bit tricky to remove, I always weld a seam with my mig-welder around the whole outer race and then press it out with a hydraulic press. When they finally let go it will sound like a gun shot! The intense heat of welding helps it alot. Inner race I just cut with a grinder (carefully) and break it with a chisel. Anyway, it´s always nice to see old Audi content, best of luck with the build! // Daniel from Sweden (200tq 20v daily driver 2008 to infinity, owned many of these) :)
Our Ur rally car also has s2 running gear, with 5 stud , and Porsche Boxter Turbo brembos front and rear . Easily available as a kit
The drive flanges on Audi Vw 's can be found in 4 & 5 studs with some being interchangble worth investigating.
You burn the metal eye centers out of the wishbones, then take a Sawzall and cut the metal shell in half the busing drops right out. I use a 3" of length of pipe and some large washer in a vice to install new ones on my B2 cars. The B4 front A arms are cast iron, I thing the bushings are larger that the B2 ones, and the ur quattro ones are like a Dasher, Santana, VW Fox and Audi Fox ....
I like your Quattro project. 💪 Frank 🙋♂️ 🇩🇪
I would swap to 5-bolt because I think 5-spoke wheels would look great on this car and 5 spoke looks best with 5 bolts.
Either 5 lug swap or stick with factory dimensions. I recommend ordering wheels from braid wheels and they will make them in whatever size you want
SO cool Scotto could help u Mike. he s a legend!! #KB43VER
Youv'e got to love Audi's Unique fixings...I have so many tools i have gatherered over the years for doing "5 min" Audi Jobs ! 😂
As much as you like special tools, you need a Mini-Ductor induction tool
9:23 they are called triple square on some places but as a hardware store owner i can tell you they are also called "bristol" and the name actually makes them cheaper!
IIRC The rear diff may be similar internally to a Porsche 951 which had a torsen option. The Audi V8 used a rear torsen also. I think for the later cars like my B5 it was the 951 unit which was the go-to design.
