As a fellow ocean engine aficionado and former wielder of the torch, I can wholeheartedly recommend an induction heater for those stuck bolts. They're only around $200 these days, and you can really get a lot of heat into exactly where you need it. You also don't run the risk of damaging anything else around.
Just things I can think of right now to look for: AAN engine things to keep notice of: -Cracks in timing gear key or fully sheared, closely inspect. Full billet options available. Issue also in small chassis cars -Cracks in cylinder head from spark plug holes. Not a total disaster, there is a spec for them in the AAN manual -Lots of small chassis cars like the URQ get the 3b engine from a '91 200 due to more compact intake design due to radiator clearance issues in small chassis that large chassis cars don't have issues with. Not 100% sure intake manifolds are a direct swap. -Many off the shelf options for retrofit newer ignition coils and harnesses. Popular and accessible options seem to the 2.0l red tops from newer VAG. -There is reported issues with ARP main studs and fouling oil check valves in the block of AAN. Just something to look into and research. Urquattro things: -Closely inspect the firewall around the clutch master while actuating, small chassis cars don't have enough bracing in the firewall for these early hydraulic set ups and they often crack/flex causing issues with clutch master alignment and rod breakage. Some aftermarket solutions tie the master mounts to the steering rack mounts. I believe Audi's solution in the rally days was internal to the cabin of the car instead of the engine bay. - Definitely interested in seeing how you tackle the hydraulic brake booster set up. Some have swapped to vacuum assist from 4000s/Coupe GTs but there are concerns there of maintaining vacuum to the booster while under load. Can't wait to see the progress on this build!
@rylanclark8221

It might not look the best but some modern vehicles, such as my 2006 Volvo, use a vacuum pump for when the engine is under load, so that's a possible solution. Otherwise would a vacuum reservoir work? My C4 A6 has two.

3B, RR, AAN, ABY and ADU intake and exhaust manifolds all fit the "different" 20v heads fine. The 7A and NM heads are the same minus the extra water cooling ports on the intake side, which can be machined in to them (same base castings for all seven engine codes). You can interchange valve covers too, basically just the three different styles. 3B/RR, 7A/NM and AAN/ABY/ADU.

This. Also, go buy the crank holder tool. You need it. And you will never get the crank bolt out without either bolting the engine stand down or doing timing with it bolted into the car. That torque spec is crazy.

Not trying to be a hater but when i saw the engine reveal i laughed at how cheap and anemic it looked. It makes the honda K series from his other project look like a beautiful big ferrari engine in comparison lmao, no hate just thought it was funny. I'm excited to see this build that 5 cylinder sound is something i wanna hear in person really bad
Sometimes ring gaps line up due to a worn spot in the cylinder and the rings move to that spot and stay there. Might be a good move to get it checked at the machine shop. Good luck with the build, love your content 👍
Looks like that engine truly sat in a field for a while, at least from the exterior. It's great that the seals (and the residual oil I guess?) held up and kept the internals nice! I'd definitely take a "only have to make the external look pretty" headache over "replace thousands of dollars worth of internals" headache any day. Hopefully the lot gets finished soon so you can get back to wrenching like you love. It's great Byron and Khalil both gave you space in their shop to work this week as well as helped you out with what looked like a nightmare of an engine. I know they're still in the early days of starting up that company which is always rough, and I'm sure they're busy. Great content as always Mike! Excited to see the engine slowly get built back up with bigger and better internals in coming episodes.
Having grown up in New England, all that rust brought back so many memories! The struggles are real... I was honestly impressed you only had to destructively remove one part. Can't wait to see this come together!
I love that you did a video showing off your neighbors work.....and views are views. That said, the quality of work that I have seen on your channel tells me that if you are recommending them......they are better than good. Still. Another great video sir. Thanks
Love watching that engine tear-down. I just know you are going to make that look better than brand new! Such an iconic build, can't wait to see how this turns out.
As a new Englander all my life I’ve seen ten year old cars that look like that engine. The contrast of interior vs. exterior is a testament to the quality of 1980’s Audi materials and build standards. Looking forward to the next installment. Media blasting and a hot tank on that block and it will look great!

Always gotta roll my eyes when KZreadrs work on anything with surface rust and act like it was raised from the Titanic. Any used engine around here that DOESN'T require a torch to take apart is considered "museum quality."
I used to have a S4 with the AAN engine, i changed the old coils to newer coilpacks from a TFSI motor and harness from 034 Motorsport. The engine ran much better and smoother at lower rpm with the newer coilpacks
Loving the project. Many of us use a 3B intake manifold and piping in the small chassis, but it's not an absolute must to do so. Just have to check for clearance for the side mount radiator. Oh, and I used the engine teardown on mine to "justify" buying a welder (for the stripped hex heads and sheared bolts), lol.
Love the build. For my 1990 Coupe I have the Wagner Tuning intake manifold and intercooler.
that's a nice surprise, didn't expect that engine to look that good on the inside
This channel should be at least 400k right about now, it's criminal that it isn't!

Needs a Motortrend companion show… just brilliant content and production quality for an Indy guy.
Ken block just finished a similar car as a family project everyone be sure to give it up for ken very tragic he was an inspiration to all regardless of the sport.
I’m retired Audi tech of 47 years, that motor is a strong piece and never had a problem concern with internals as long as there is oil and coolant in it. I just did regular maintenance including timing belt and tensioner and water pump. There is a special tool to hold front crank pulley and a extension used with a 3/4” breaker bar to loosen bolt and used with a torque wrench for the proper torque, make sure to use locktite on the bolt as it is used as a sealant as well.
Subscribed! Having owned a few 10v and 20v Audis and dreamed of doing such a transplant, I will live vicariously through your build. Hopefully the hiccups will be minimal and the outcome will be magical
I had Jeff Gerner @ four ring performance supplying all my parts for my AAN build i consider him a mentor for these units along as many others in the old 5cyl community, in case you are still looking for pistons, cams and all the necessary parts for the build! ✌🏼 good luck!
Happy New Year, big man! I can't wait to see you knock the crust off this engine and see what you've got planned.

Great video, from someone who is planning on an engine build it is always fun to see. This will Be the best car in the garage when it’s done. Ur Quattro as stated below was Ken’s daughters choice for her first car. Ken Block is on everyone’s mind and it’s a terrible loss. My heart goes out to his family. It is unbelievable the pain they are enduring as someone who has been in their shoes. Looking forward to what you create here. Tons of aftermarket help in the US here. I’m about to spend some serious $ on my build
as an 80's kid these audis quatros were the top cars on the road where i live went to a few group b rallies the cars where just wild
Just rebuilt my AAN. Go with Supertech valves and springs. Keep stock pistons but upgrade rods is a must. I went with IE rods.
that car looks amazing, really good conditon, I'm sort of a purist so I love seeing relatively stock survivors like this one
Nice. I have a 1996 S2 Coupe not been on the road for 12 years now. Only done 75k miles. Will be getting that back in action this years. Always good to see anyone one of these classics kept in action
Looking forward to this build so much. Those flared arches on the Quattro are schmexy as all hell!
Being from the north east I've taken to applying grease and anti seize to every component I come in contact with because of the difficulties of disassembly at a later date. Doesn't hurt to take an extra second to save you from hours of headache in the future even if you live in a fair climate.
That block reminded me of the BMW blocks the F1 team in the early 80's used to leave out in the elements to help season them to be more dimensionally stable. You may have a real diamond in the rough there and I'm sure with a little effort you'll have a gem on your hands. As for the rods the discussion begins and ends with Carrillo. They are local to you and hands down the only choice for ultimate reliability.

I see the BMW F1 lore has grown legs and escaped reality. The F1 team bought used motors with tons of miles on them. Leaving them out in the weather wouldn't do anything for dimensional stability. It was the heat cycles and vibration from road use that stress-relieved them.
The Quattro was my favorite rally car of all time. This is the coolest !
Great video! Cool to see others getting involved in the project.
Great work!! Love the content and way you’re explaining your process. Can’t wait to see the progress on this one and for you to rally it!
So pumped on this content! I picked up an S4 last year for cheap The whole hotside had been disassembled. All the parts are there so a good opportunity to pull the engine and do a full or partial rebuild. Very much looking forward to the loom/standalone content
I loved getting to see an engine teardown. Two this week! Eric over at IDoCars does one every Saturday night. On the subject of crank pulleys... at least you didn't need a forklift and a front-end loader to remove the crank bolt. Can't wait to see this thing go back together. Engine work has always been one of my favorite things.
Saw "stance" works and thought oh boy, some camber boys got their hands on a urquattro, but you guys are a legit page.
I loled hard when you said the engine looks like it came from the bottom of the ocean... That's a mint looking motor up in the rust belt/Canada
Stoked for this build. I've learned to love audi once I got my b8 s5 4.2
Imaging seeing this engine and saying "let's throw this in my Audi". Mike keeps his eye on the vision and I love him for it!

I can't wait to see what you do with this engine! A video cleaning the engine block would be cool. May be the video you need for this week.
Bought from Atlanta? More like Atlantis! Super excited about this one. Big Audi fan.

So stoked for the E30 project. You talk & teach so well. I just purchased my fist E30. So I’m super stoked to see what you’re gonna be building.
Love the careful disassembly. That quattro is epic , a 944t is also sweet
Love this 5 cylinder build, I definitely have an Audi 5cyl on my bucket list
Still not as bad as the D2 V8 I’m working on but it was still enjoyable to watch your collective pain. Great project 👍🏻
Love the Audi content, gets me excited to build my Couple Quattro. Gotta keep the 5 cylinders.
I love this! Really looking forward to the rest of the series.
Like any restoration, it takes time. So, take your time. You want this done right. What's really great is that you got started on the Audi and it's going to be awesome. The Ferrari will be done in time.

Ken tribute of some sort would be amazing ❤
Ah yes an Alfa 75 (Milano) your friends next door have just won another follower 🍀 That said , this Quattro build is keeping me hooked to your channel to Mike 👌🏻
Very excited to see this project. I am a bit surprised that more time wasn't spend researching this engine and how it is laid out, and slightly surprised that shop doesn't have any 3/4" sockets or breaker bar. 30 minutes of research would have saved hours of frustration. Both those things would have made your life MUCH easier than depending intuition, and air and cordless. The only thing that was a surprise to me was the alternator bolt. Someone messed with that before and left you a nice gift. lol Check out the key on the pulley to make sure it's good or get a billet pulley instead. These engines are unfortunately getting harder and harder to find these days as so many 'enthusiasts' hoard parts, and a lot of people gave up on these cars around 10 years ago when they started getting to 2nd hand owners who don't have the financial resources, as well as a lack of mechanics that are not scared of older German cars. Now the cars are in more demand, but it's hard to make up for that lack of parts as well as Audi AG not being willing to ship older parts to the US.
So pumped for this!
An induction heater is the only way to remove most of the bolts on this engine, even the seized alternator bolt can be heated entirely through the alloy bracket to break it free .
Looking forward to following this build. I have a JY that will have to undergo the same one day or another.
Happy New Year sir!!! Thank you for continuing to produce awesome content
Awesome project.
Fantastic engines they are... But the Crank Bolt is surely the tightest pos Bolt I ever had to loosen in my mechanic Career

Keep Up te good work greetings from Holland 💪
So much diversity lately with the 244 GTK, some Apache content and the Audi! I was really looking forward to what you had in store for the Apache, but the Audi is so cool! Completely non car related, what kind of pocket knife do you carry?

My machinist use a cleaning bath with a paintstripper and acid. The blocks come out of it in shining light grey cast iron. Ive never seen cast iron like that it just looks amazing. Unfortunate for me my gm 60 deg v6 was one of those 1/100 blocks where they paint didnt come off so I still had to spend time sanding it..
Awesome. Not surprised that the internals look as good as they do, but yeah, the outside looks like its lived at the bottom of the Caspian sea. Looking forward to seeing what you end up doing, motor wise :D
@cuatrokoop32v
Жыл бұрын
Agree, you and I both know how durable the old 2.1/2.2/2.3 engines are... They look like crap on the outside but are totally fine on the inside even at 200k+ miles. The short block of my old 220k-ish mile NG went on to live under a 7A head with 3B manifolds and a K24 turbo slapped on it for a while.
Outstanding!!
Yo Mike, make sure your key on the crank snout didn't just shear off. Audi made a tool for holding the damper when doing a timing belt job on these. I made my own out of a 4ft length of flat steel bar and a 4x4 hub socket cut up to fit inside the damper and allow a socket to pass through. Also absolutely have the machine shop inspect that head for cracks!
A stock head will easily do 600whp. Also, the stock intake is fairly good, and you should be able to keep it. To be fair, an RS2 manifold with a stock intake with a ballbearing turbo and forged rods and pistons will be enough. You'd make a reliable 500ish whp all day long
this kind of video is sick i love how engaging it feels
I've done the timing belt on a 10v and used a 3-foot pipe on my breaker bar! The engine was still in the car, so that helped hold that end of things!
The year always starts with good things. KK hard at work to I c Edit I didn't know it was his business, congrats
Woah what an endeavor!
Marc at EFIExpress makes an LS-style coilpack system for AANs and can get you the manifold. I had these on my AAN powered S6 and it was so much better. I had an RS2 turbo and 034 RS2 ECU and it was strong to 32psi of boost and regular 28psi. The N75 was the problem... It's now called EFI Motorsport. $509 for the entire plug and play kit. For $250, they'll sell you one that uses modern factory VW/Audi coil-on-plugs, but the coilpack system is remote mounted so the coilpacks don't overheat on top of the engine
man, i remember a few videos ago you said this engine wasn't describe well from the shipper... thats an understatement looks like someone pulled that motor in like 95 and left it sitting under a tree hah
You Cali guys are so spoiled, that engine looks like a gem!
AWESOME!
Flywheels are really heavy on these engines, so if you get a fluidamper running a lighter flywheel won't bother it at all. If you aren't going to throw a ton of boost at it, run a higher compression piston. An aftermarket I beam rod will be fine. Doing an exhaust manifold would help for ease of servicing if you convert to Vband clamps. It would also allow you to run an anti-lag valve, which not only sounds amazing, but is consistent with how audi modded these cars for racing series.
The Audi/VW front pulley and accessory pulley Allen headed bolts are notoriously cheesey…😂 Amazed you got any out as easily as you did. 👍🏻

034Motorsports has a lot of support for these engines and I built my 7A Turbo with mostly parts supplied by them and they're in your neck of the woods.
Those coil plugs are set up like a cosworth V10 engine that rob damn has. Just a fact I pointed out . Great video man keep it up
