The Athame and How to Make Your Own EP83

There are quite a few tools on the witch’s altar that are utilized during spells, rituals and honoring deity. The thurible or censor, Chalice, Pentacle, Wand, Sword, Bell, Book, Candles, bowl of salt, incense and water… all of these things are very important in a typical witch’s arsenal to help achieve what they feel they need to get done. Some witches don’t use any tools at all, and this is just as valid as any other. Other tools can be seen inside of a witch’s circle or sacred space as well including staves, cauldrons, vases and any one or more of various divinatory aids such as tarot cards, crystal balls, runes or even bones. With this being said, I have but one last tool to mention that to some could be the most important tool to a witch only second to a Witches intuition. This tool is the Athame. In this episode of Witch N’ the Working we are going to talk all about the Ins and Outs of the Athame and then I am going to show you how to make your own if you so dare. So grab yourself something pleasing to the palette and let’s get into it!!! Roll Intro!!

I loved this video. Mostly because I am an occultist blacksmith and " Wiccan adjacent " witch myself. ( not initiated) it is very interesting to see how other practitioners create there own ritual tools and your ideas of salvaging a blade from another knife is an excellent idea. I've made quite a number of knives but I've never made a ritual dagger for myself. I'm a solitary so my process for casting circle is quite different in my forge. Example. I use my smiting hammer to invite Brigid to come and be welcome in circle with me during a ritual or magical forging. As she is a goddess of Smith craft it seams appropriate to use my sacred hammer for this. But I know its not exactly the traditional tool for the job.

I am a bladesmith (I do sell knives and hatchets but mostly it's a passion and a hobby). I made a dozen Athames for a local coven and several of the members wanted to do most of the work with me in my shop. I spent several days around all of the others to get an idea of their energy and their intentions. The first thing I learned is that every one of these witches had their own entirely unique way of approaching their Athame despite being from the same coven. They had different priorities and different levels of understanding and a different relationship with the energies and entities that they were working with. I found it to be a beautiful and valuable process that continues to inform my Bladesmithing practices.

Mannon, Thanks for the video on crafting your own Athame. I think many of us have a creative side and appreciate the connection with ritual tools we make ourselves. I also made my athame several years ago. I made a sand cast of a double-edged dagger blade and then cast it in solid silver. I used black ebony for the handle. I shaped the handle and made silver caps for the top and bottom. Once that was done, I set a moonstone cabochon in one side and an amethyst cabochon in the other. The materials cost a little bit of money, but it is very special to me it was worth it. Not trying to brag or anything just sharing my ideas for others to draw inspiration from. Keep up the good work with your channel!

Love the hat, .. Well, .. cutting green wood was more of a challenge than one thought it would be. As for .. plastics .. I met some Urban Primitives that go out of their way to use as much plastic they can in rituals. Tools, .. Athame, 10in bread knife with black plastic handle with saw tooth blade. Alter cloth, plastic table cloth, use pizza pan to trace inter circle and hula-hoop to trace outer circle. Hero kicks/D&D mini action figures for board games stand ins of deities. Caster used his oversize saw tooth bread knife to slice up a pound cake and served drinks in plastic cups and asked the astral beings to Bless his dice rolls in the current upcoming D&D game. 3/4th of gaming shop players though it was all a fun stage joke. Result outcome after three hours of D&D gaming, this guy didn't roll under 15 on d20. It is not the equipment, it is the user. Other than that. 2.) Cheap shopping for something different, .. Officer supply store, look for copper blade letter openers. The metal is soft enough to etch and to drill through to place wooden handles on. Even coarse grit sandpaper can be used to sand down a shape edge on the blade, problems are it will not keep a sharp edge after cutting for very long, you can put such a quick edge on the copper blade that you can nick your fingers on before you know it. Sadly you will also need very fine sandpaper to polish the blade with cause the surface can easy be scratched while putting and edge on it. Sanding/sharping the blade is just away to pass the time, and to focus channel energy into the blade. As for polishing the blade, animal totem spirits called to the blade will demand .. petting. Bonus side if wanted, you can paste the copper blade with sea salt to gain a green patina, I do not advise burning the salt after wards as it is not too healthy. Read up on copper salts, and what junior high school lab experiments you can do with it. Once the copper blade is green, just etch down to the original copper metal then beeswax. Also the copper blades make interesting wind chimes.

Other fun things, at your local hardware store or farmers' depo, they have a wielding row where you can buy strips on different grades of steel for quick fix wielding jobs. Just buy a strip of metal and beat it with a hammer for stress relief. You can use a carpenter hammer to pock mark the surface of the metal then use a 6lb hammer to cold work the edges to an edge then sharpen with file after wards. Notes the steel at most of the hardware stores are not knife grade steel and make crampy swords, over all with about $100 of cutting tools, you can still make some nice soft steel wall hangers. If looking for .. orc .. primitive style of blade work, it is a way to go at it.

@@WitchNTheWorking I just seen .. weird .. things over the years, and D&D dice are made of plastic. I just pointed out the oddities of some people. Old joke why we don't have .. Fairies .. running through our houses like stories of old. Old houses were tongue & groove built with wooden pegs, Now days we have iron/steel nails & screws throughout the buildings. So why bother with the iron horseshoe. Main reason I know of so many different ways to put together magic tools cause I was trying to find what works for me. After six to ten months, make something else. Turns out my trick is making stuff when needed for someone else, or drawing spell scroll cards for luck charms. Before the internet, I created so much .. junk .. I had to just give it away cause my area didn't have the money to spend on such things and no way to really sell it. You want a magic walking stick, here uh take this one. Twenty years later people still have what I hand off to them back in 1995. Take a tree branch from a tree struck by lightning, hand saw or power tool cut into thin slices and create Viking Runes out of the branch. The Runes never worked for me, other than drawing a bunch of birds into my house. So I gave them to a woman who for the past fifth teen or so years have been having people Pay Her to do rune readings for them. Yeah, I can hear Loki laughing at me from time to time.

Plastic, plastic handles, ... it can only be your opinion as you say, but it is not only your opinion. If we remember that this craft is very old, then we must not forget the respect for crafts and tools, because at that time they did not know plastic. And whoever really belongs to this craft will choose natural materials. Idiot...hahaha welcome to the club...every one of us sometimes does something that is not the smartest, but if you are skillful at work, you are forgiven. The only thing I would change when making the handle is to pour glue into the hole before inserting the blade, purely from a practical point of view. Otherwise ... another great video, thank you! 🗡🔮🪄😉

You are correct... Usually I do put the glue first but this athami was a little bit different because the stang was so tight going in the hole I had to pound it in first

I answer all of those questions in my video. Yes it's fine to purchase them but best to do a little something to them to personalize them. Maybe paint a few runes on the blade or handles. Air or fire .... Again in the video I mention that most witches use Fire as the associative element and most Magicians use Air.

Heya Mannin, would love to meet you one day although I'm sure we've already met in other realms. I discovered witchy stuff at an early age although I was too young to know what it was. I spent much time in hospital as a child, learned to fly by the seat of my pants and trust intuition as it was pretty much, all I had. As an industrial, post punk proto gothy type in the early eighties, I began to understand and trust the power I had of foresight was. As a solitary, shy person recently cured from hep C that I contracted in hospital, I want to start practisingI. Sadly I find socialising exhausting as I pick up on negativity very quickly and am susceptible to the ''vibes man'. Anyways, to cut to the chase,, I do very much enjoy the company of good people and very much want to learn the structure to practising. I am very much a beginner and don't know where to begin. If ever you are in London, I live in Earls CRT and am one of the only proto goths left. I Have black and white tied back mohican hair. Come look me up, it would be great to chatter. Love, lite, peace and transcendence. Gzy. P.S. going to hunt for my Athamay handle today ;-).

@@mattzonca4230 appreciate yr comment very much. Thank you. I know I am not alone in suffering and we all have had our trials and tribulations in life but having contracted hep C in 1973 through a blood transfusion in surgery and the discrimination I've experienced since the infection, I know I am one of only a few people who are still awaiting the slandering from the state to stop and to be given equal rights and opportunities. Compensation would be seen as a bonus and is not my driving force despite being so deserving of compensation for all the years of oppression. Many of us have had openings into meaningful study/employment severely restricted clearly to prevent earning potentials that could finance law suits against the state. The Tories were in power when these inferior blood products were purchased and the world was very right wing at the time. The Tories have been in power for well over a decade and very little has changed. If it weren't for all the good majik folk, I dont think I would still be alive. Best wishes all round to all the lovely folk around, blest blesseds and all that jahoo. Gzy

Hi I really enjoyed your upload. I have a question, what should happen to a witches athame after the witch passes? Can it be passed on? Peace

The fate of a witch's Athame (a ceremonial knife) after their passing varies widely depending on personal beliefs, traditions, and practices within the witchcraft community. In many traditions, an Athame is considered a very personal tool, often believed to hold a part of the witch's energy, spirit, or essence. Here are a few perspectives: 1. **Return to Nature**: Some believe that the most respectful course of action is to return the Athame to nature, either by burying it in a place significant to the deceased or by casting it into a body of water. This is seen as a way to release the witch's energy back into the natural world. 2. **Passing Down**: In other cases, an Athame can be passed on to a family member, friend, or apprentice who is also a practitioner. This is often viewed as a way of honoring the deceased by allowing their tools to continue being used in practice. However, this typically involves a ritual to cleanse and re-consecrate the Athame, ensuring that it aligns with the new owner's energy. 3. **Keeping as a Memorial**: Sometimes, an Athame is kept as a memorial to the deceased, treated with reverence and respect. It might be placed on an altar or in a sacred space as a way to remember and honor the witch's life and practice. 4. **Destruction**: In some traditions, it's believed that a witch's tools should be destroyed upon their death to prevent their misuse or to release their energy. The Athame could be ceremonially broken, burned (if possible), or otherwise rendered unusable. The choice among these options (or others) largely depends on the deceased's wishes (if known), the customs of their particular practice or tradition, and the feelings of those close to them. It's essential to approach the situation with respect for the deceased's beliefs and practices, as well as for the sentiments of their community and loved ones.
