The Assassination of Fred Hampton: New Documents Reveal Involvement of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover

Newly unearthed documents have shed new light on the FBI’s role in the murder of the 21-year-old Black Panther leader Fred Hampton on December 4, 1969, when Chicago police raided Hampton’s apartment and shot and killed him in his bed, along with fellow Black Panther leader Mark Clark. Authorities initially claimed the Panthers had opened fire on the police who were there to serve a search warrant for weapons, but evidence later emerged that told a very different story: The FBI, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Chicago police had conspired to assassinate Fred Hampton. FBI memos and reports obtained by historian and writer Aaron Leonard now show that senior FBI officials played key roles in planning the raid and the subsequent cover-up. “It was approved at the highest level,” says attorney Jeff Haas. We also speak with attorney Flint Taylor. Both are with the People’s Law Office and were the lead lawyers in a landmark civil rights case over the deaths of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark.

The Panthers were a threat because they modeled love and brotherhood as a social model, and the capitalist model deeply needed to keep us separated. Only now is this beginning to change. The Panthers, as well as the Indigenous, showed us the way. We have been a tragedy to everyone we've met, but we can end that now.

Black Panthers Fred Hampton, 21, and Mark Clark, 22, are gunned down by 14 police officers as they lie sleeping in their Chicago, Illinois, apartment. About a hundred bullets had been fired in what police described as a fierce gun battle with members of the Black Panther Party. However, ballistics experts later determined that only one of those bullets came from the Panthers’ side. In addition, the “bullet holes” in the front door of the apartment, which police pointed to as evidence that the Panthers had been shooting from within the apartment, were actually nail holes created by police in an attempt to cover up the attack. Four other Black Panthers were wounded in the raid, as well as two police officers

The Panthers were my 1st bonafide heroes and the fact of Hampton's mere 21 years of life did not impress me as it does now at nearly 68. To this day i largely credit their rise with the strength i found to begin to speak up and out as i had previously (for some unknown reason) been a clinically shy child while growing up next door in racist Omaha, NE.

I was one of those children who ate those breakfasts. The Black Panthers made my childhood heaven on earth. I lived directly across the street from their Chicago headquarters and spent my every free moment taking it all in. He taught us our history taking us to the DuSable Museum regularly and showing us the African art Picasso copied. We saw pictures of the first and oldest known mathematical instrument created by Africans, we walked through a Black-owned Newspaper, the Chicago Defender, and talked with a Black news reporter. When we were short on money for school trips, the Panthers would give us the money we need. And they weren't racists, they brought in poor whites and told us they were in the same boat as we were, but that didn't last long and one day we couldn't play with them anyone. He said, the one thing that scared the hell out of government was people coming together for a common cause. He taught us so much and it stays with me to this day. May his legacy live on in all of us as we remain mindful to help our brothers and sisters.
