How Stokely Carmichael and the Black Panthers changed the civil rights movement | Fresh Air

Journalist Mark Whitaker says that much of what's happening American race relations today traces back to 1966, the year when the Black Panthers were founded and the Black Power movement took full form. It's also the year when Stokely Carmichael replaced John Lewis as chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and challenged the tactic of non-violence. Whitaker examines the pivotal year in his new book, Saying It Loud: 1966 - The Year Black Power Challenged the Civil Rights Movement.

"They look cool," being their "enduring legacy," is the most porcelain thing I've ever heard to describe the Panthers. 😂😂

Mr Whitaker , forgive me if I spelt your name INCORRECTLY. SNCC was not against the Civil Rights, its principles, not the civil rights leaders. When using the term " redirected " that sounds like Mr. Carmicheal was talking nonsense . Today, uneconomic citizens are still in the same situation, yes, they get larger amount paycheck , but the cost of living got financially larger, the irs increase their taxes, and again these citizens are in the same situation. Their sweat and blood only benefits the capitalist, never giving the individual that chance to be self sustaining. We are educated to work for money that sustained the capitalist and do nothing to sustain humanity. Love your warning , be aware of the back lash. We need to focus on why you started the movement, be true to the final goal achievement . Today we are still distracted by individualism, being out smarted by capitalism, this is why we can not reach the state of sustainable stability .
