A dark comedy set in the world of karate. The film centers on Casey (Jesse Eisenberg), who is attacked at random on the street and enlists in a local dojo led by a charismatic and mysterious Sensei (Alessandro Nivola), in an effort to learn how to defend himself. What he uncovers is a sinister world of fraternity, violence and hypermasculinity and a woman (Imogen Poots) fighting for her place in it. Casey undertakes a journey, both frightening and darkly funny, that will place him squarely in the sights of his enigmatic new mentor.

as somebody who has been doing Karate since I was seven, I find this hilarious, and some of it very relatable, like running through sequences at work (1:54) (I did this at school alot), the massive hype up about things which in reality don't matter to much (2:17), and how much people hate withe belts (0:42) (context: alot of people join and become white belts, then they go up two or three belts then leave, yet still think they can take on anyone and win)

This movie was really good. I loved the absurdity of some of the dialogue but it's delivered so sincerely. Gets pretty intense toward the 2nd half.

Definitely not for everyone, and it's darker and deeper than what's on the surface. You feel like it's a dry dark comedy but it really isn't. It's just so dark it's funny. "They thought he was a bird" and the "one finger death punch of the three sensei" really was quite brilliant. It's a light bulb later. Very deep. Very good. My sort of movie.

Euphoric Atheist Also, a lot of dudes didn’t. There are lots of reasons individuals are drawn to extreme art, and they aren’t always about trauma. Besides, metal has always walked a fine line between Dutch Golden Age and Absurdism. A lot of metal is exceptionally difficult to play and requires players that are as talented as they are disciplined. This music functions for many in the same way exercise does for others. It isn’t just people screaming about being molested. Sure, that happens sometimes, but that doesn’t define the genre as one of damaged goods or bad apples. Give it a chance, pal.
