The Archaeology of Ecstasy: Psychedelics in the Ancient Mediterranean World

Can archaeology help us recover the ecstatic experiences of ancient peoples from the Aegean or Near East? And, if so, what evidence is there that such ecstatic experiences were induced by what we now call “psychedelics”? To what degree was the ancient pursuit of ecstasy understood as an individual or a collective imperative, or both? And in pursuing such questions, what do we learn not only about the ancient Mediterranean world, but about our own modern world, and the contemporary psychedelic renaissance and its priorities? CSWR Director Charles M. Stang hosted archaeologists Karen Polinger Foster (Yale) and Andrew Koh (Harvard) to present their research and to discuss these and other questions about “the archaeology of ecstasy.” "The Archaeology of Ecstasy: Psychedelics in the Ancient Mediterranean World" is part of the CSWR's new initiative, "Transcendence and Transformation."
This event took place on October 25, 2021.

Thanks for this. Seems a case can be made for some Minoan artists with psychedelic experiences. Surprised we didn't see some of the blazingly ecstatic figures carved in sealstones, etched in gold rings, painted in frescoes. Ancient Crete had herds of wild cattle/bulls, in whose dung the famous mushrooms can grow, yet there seem to be no images of mushrooms in their art. So unless they had secret plant-based psychedelics it seems their sources were liquids/mixtures as shown here. And, since the biggest Minoan finds by volume are hoards of little drinking-cups, did their general population get their share perhaps during initiations, rituals and festivals? Oldest legends say their "secrets were open to all." (By the way, their cinnamon had to be coming from Sri Lanka likely via Gaza/Spice Road trade.)

We call it psychedelic, but what if it is the usually unseen invisible energy dimension all around us. Some of the occult/shamanic teachings talk of achieving a point of being able to see this underlying fabric of energy fields without using chemicals to do so, but with much work and practice. I understand the drugs must be much easier, but the question is what are they truly seeing. Kind of like shifting your viewing frequency to an area not usually seen. Makes sense to me. Towards the end you guys seemed to be getting into that direction some.

Psychedelics certainly explains the crazy ideas the ancients came up with in the sacred texts.

The free nomadic peoples knew a history and the base truth of life, The Slavers pretty much wanted this knowledge wiped out This is why the crazy stories are a Façade That hide a very different human history You just have to work out the code

One of the "filters" is inevitably sexism. So much of this practical ritual and medicine was practiced by women, a group of people the Western tradition hasn't considered credible for hundreds of years or more. Perfume factories? What were the ladies hiding in the perfumery? 🌾🍄 Please be graceful gentlemen and give credit where credit is due. Medicine and magic was the profession of women. Try to be brave and write it down. Talk about it. Don't allow bias to write us out of history, yet again. The psychedelic renaissance needs to not be about pulling the ladders up behind ourselves but including indigenous people and those whose work "witchcraft" has always been. IMO.

Excitement... caution... compassion... Do you know if these types of 'diet' would assist in people being a better version of themselves or corruption?

I just want to say the connection between absinthe and wormwood has nothing to do with psychedelic effects. Chemical analysis of pre prohibition absinthe does not have enough of the compound to cause hallucinations.
