Even better, it went a THIRD way! Raziel was both champions, and Kain was just chilling on the sidelines as Scion of Balance, never really having a horse in the race to begin with. I'm sure even he didn't see that one coming. The coin really did land on its edge!

Kinda had to be up until this prophecy everything else was pre determined for both kain and raziel. This probably being the only thing that nobody knew the ending to.

@CohCohPuff yeah it feels like that especially knowing they left it open for another main game. But went a different direction and when it didn't work out stopped everything and left the series where it is. I have about hundred or so followers on Twitter that are gamers and they don't know what the hell legacy of kain is. It's really sad to me. And when I wanted to turn people on to it. They ignored me. Fine I guess lol.

Raziel's coloring is pale like a hylden when he was a vampire, where the others are bluish, his wings are not feathered but batlike, similar to what some of the hylden art shows.

Don't forget the part of the prophecy that talks about the reaver being the key to restore the pillars. You later learn that the pillars lock then hylden. So basically the reaver will be used to restore the pillars, the lock. That means it will either heal them of true corruption, or literally physically erect them again with new guardians to lock away the hylden again. Only the scion of balance can create new guardians from scratch.

@@Brandelwyn Exactly. Ingame dialogue in Blood Omen 2 suggests the Hylden plan genocide on humans since dwelling in the demonic dimension so long transformed their "beautiful" bodys into soul sucking husks.

The mural artwork of the battle between champions with the 2 different outcomes are so well done, they remind me of old oil paintings depicting fallen angels and biblical battles

You guys are so good to us fans releasing this still today despite the series being a little niche :)

Excellent essay, as always! I really enjoyed you highlighting some of the more obscure champion murals. Also, never put it together before that the final Scion of Balance mural is essentially Kain's vampire/family crest. Very cool~

and kain was purified by raziels glyph swprd (wraithblade) This should indicate that Kains transformation in time (Darl Prphecy) will encounter the real Hylden chanmpion The Sarafan Lord that only has one view But by kains purified sight Kain has both sides of the coin Kain is the Edge of the Coin :)

Cool video! It never ceases to amaze me how Amy and the others didn't get confused with this whole story. Only way I made sense of the storyline was reading and watching videos like this. Also,I recently played Defiance again after many years. I noticed when one presses the E key we are allowed to 'look' all over the environment. This would suggest the game does indeed render everything in the environment (not just what the cinematic camera allows to be viewed). With that in mind, would it be possible, I wonder, to make Defiance playable with a camera similar to SR1/SR2? I wonder if it's been tried before.

Thank you! Amy wrote a "bible" with all the lore info for this purpose, so not everybody on the team is on the same page. Correct, environments are all rendered in 3D. There is a trainer which puts camera behind Raziel, but it has issues and resets when the camera would change angles.

Really nice video. I always thought redeemer and destroyer meant Raziel was the redeemer and Kain was the destroyer (for him refusing the sacrifice].Then thought to realize pawn and messiah. Kain being the messiah Because he is the Scion of balance. As for Raziel, the pawn: Being the right hand And played a part to be whole with the reaver blade Thus cleansing Kains corruption. Even though Raziel Keeps being used left and right just like a pawn would lol

I still think the skull on the soul reaver is supposed to be raziel… I’ll die on that hill…

One aspect of the prophesy that nobody seems to grasp is that Raziel is meant to save them from a foe, they considered their god. The pictures of the two champions is meant to show that Raziel could be both. What if he is neither and the battle in the pictures detail Kain’s duel with the Hilden Lord in LOK2, his fall and revenge?

Interesting idea! However, the devs said the fight represents Raziel, just depicted differently because Hylden and Ancients could not see him clearly.

@@RainaAudron I always and still do prefer that both options are true, Kain being vampire savior, and raziel being hylden champion, Raziel defeats kain and took his heart, But Kain kills raziel and absorbs him within the blade. Both killed eachother, just not in the plain black and white way one would guess a prophecy would suggest

I think with raziels free will he could have represented both champions but due to everyone manipulating him he was forced to be the hyldens champion, as it turns out he was the prisoner of the soul reaver when he sacrificed himself to be kains right hand , his sword, so bigger question remains why would raziel or the hylden champion be symbiotic bound to kain making kain more powerful , powerful enough to hurt the elder god , and why the soul reaver be endowed to hurt the elder god as the ancients viewed the squid as there god.

The English (automatically generated) subtitles are super hilarious on this one. 29:03 for example, Raziel: "but I refuse to be your porn". 29:17 "where every player on the board claimed the same porn". Thanks to the subtitles the "pawn" section became a "porn" section, 🤣. Anyway... great and informative video.. as usual.

@RainaAudron 5:20 Is where Raziel refuses to kill Kain infront of the memorial of William the Just. 5:24 where Raziel absorbs Ariel to purify the reaver. 5:27 Raziel who stands at the lookout of Janos Audren's retreat after they took his heart.

How about the vision where Raziel stood at the balcony with the fire reaver where in Soul Reaver 1 he wiped out all vampires, tried to say that he indeed would do that by killing Janos but only in his younger version of himself?

35:38 Interestingly, in Blood Omen 1, I never fully interpreted that as a 'prophecy' involving anyone. I simply interpreted it a a riddle that truly meant 'He - whoever that may be, really - who manages to solve this riddle will understand that he needs to come back during the full moon, in order to learn a powerful spell, so you had better do it - it might as well be you'.

If it was a blood reaver why does it try to suck raziels soul. It's vacant... so his spirit reaver turned on him he tried to eat himself but why would he be trapped in the blood reaver ?

That is the the thing, he cannot eat himself so instead, the wraith blade dragged his soul inside the empty Blood Reaver. It could also do with BR being enchanted to imprison the Hylden champion.

My interpretation is that the reaver was designed to trap the champion of the hylden, and it's doing exactly what it was meant to do

My theory is that the Blood Reaver had to get a taste of the living Raziel's blood first. Once it did, it hungered for more and turned on the wraith Raziel, pulling his soul into the sword.

In my opinion raziel was never part of the hylden cause how could he be he was human turned vampire after death +after getting casted into abyss he somehow becomes hylden? Or what ? I think reaver was enhanced to imprison wraiths and ghost creatures cause hylden can't get material form in nosgoth without collapse of the pillars

but soulreaver 1 forged raziel into a hylden because of all the glyphs he obtained and that only to enhance his Glyph energy can allow raziel to use Glyph based abillities and he could even enhance his glyphgauge by elderichs stones. And in blood omen 2 the hylden clearly uses glyphpower to shut gates and anything else to give nosgoth a hylden type of opression to them Glyph is hylden stuff so when raziel has even the glyph powers to change plains that meanes Raziel indeed unwillingly forged himself into a hyldenchampion

@@TungstenViper Yes, if you see in the SR2 final scene, Raziel is inside the uroboros, and uroboros don't have wings, but when he pass to the spectral realm the uroboros have wings.
