i was fortunate enough to get my hands on Haddawy's translations of Arabian nights in two volumes of everyman library editions in a thrift store. everyman has stopped printing those editions and has switched to a different author / editor for their latest version of Arabian nights

Interesting. I wonder if this Norton has different material that isn't present in the three volume set from Penguin (The Arabian Nights: Tales of 1,001 Nights). Also, how's the translation?

They come from different sources. Haddawy's translation is from the oldest Syrian manuscript and Lyons (the Penguin edition) is from Calcutta II, a much later edition.

FYI, this volume does not include Sindbad the Sailor, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, nor Aladdin and the Lamp as none those were in the original Syrian manuscript. Haddawy includes those stories in a second volume. In this case of Ali Baba and Aladdin, he even translated them from French and not Arabic, as the French translation was the first time either of those stories ever appeared in written form. As for the translation itself, it’s competent and intelligible.

@@oppie47 Thank you for all this information. I've always associated those stories with the Arabian Nights.

colophon doesn't mention acid-free. Is that correct? I thought WW Norton were meant to be top-tier wrt paperbacks?
