    sounds like i enjoy the dc comic more though since the tv actor stuff just feesl a bit.. shallow ...universe wise , like a tv soap drama that circles a single place and ignores how there needs to be stuff happening around it etc while the comic sounds more like ''yep theres ..a hell.. and a heaven ,and both factions have their realities and their agents and dogmas etc all part of the larger universe that makes their silly 'absolute' claims compared to the 'needed' weaknesses make more sense XD

    I never interpreted it as Lucifer denying Constantine's entry into heaven specifically - I believe he was dying/had died and WOULD have gone to heaven due to his self-sacrifice, but Lucifer healed and/or resurrected him with a clean bill of health.

    7:15 I think god was the one that stripped Gabriel of his angelic powers and features. I don’t think the devil had that power in this movie, Gabriel full on believed he would have at least been able to harm Lucifer, which is why he went in for the punch but Lucifer said god doesn’t have his back anymore.

    The Lucifer from this movie is based on the "First of the Fallen" character seen in the "Bad Habits" arc from Hellblazer. Originally he was supposed to be Lucifer, but at the time Neil Gaiman was writing Sandman, and in his stories Lucifer was a radically different character. So in order to avoid confusion they established that the two were different characters. The Lucifer from the Lucifer tv series is based on Neil Gaiman's version, Lucifer Morningstar.

    One of my favorite scenes, in a movie full of favorite scenes, is when Gavin Rossdale/Balthazar meets Constantine at Midnight's club and takes a jab at Constantine as if he wanted to bite him. Reeve's reaction is either incredibly well acted or he didn't expect Rossdale to do this and the reaction was genuine. Anyway, one of the best movies in my collection. The awesome props, the acting, the story, it's a masterpiece. I can even endure Shia LaBeouf in it.

Gabriel was simply there to let Mammon out through the psychic.

    This is a great movie. Couple corrections.First Angels are neither male or female, they are unisex. So saying Tilda Swinton is portraying a male is incorrect. Second, you keep calling Gabriel a half angel when in fact Gabriel is an Archangel. I think a tenet you seem to be missing in your synopsis is that angels are meant to reflect the will of God. Gabriel, through misguided intentions, is enacting their own will by attempting to elevate mankind. Not only are they subverting God's plan for the world by working to release Hell on Earth, they are committing the greater sin of passing judgement, which only God has the authority to do. Obviously Lucifer would be pretty well aquainted with this concept and the punishment for it. THIS is why Gabriel loses God's favour and is made mortal. I hope this may give you a new perspective on the film, and may make some of the pieces fall into place a bit better. For example how Gabriel is able to destroy Balthazar without even raising a finger. Also I do realize that John calls Gabriel a half-breed in the church, when he is angry that his efforts aren't enough to clean his slate saying "you're the one that should go to Hell half-breed". My interpretation is that this is an insult rather than a definition. While telling Gabriel off he slanders them, comparing them to the regular half-breed influence peddlers, when Gabriel is a direct (meaning they appear to people) messenger of God's will,. Famously it is Gabriel who appears to Mary and tells her she will give birth to Jesus. Hardly comparable to someone behind the scenes who would "nudge" you in one direction or the other. Just some food for thought for you. I definitely agree that this is a great movie though. I've rewatched it many times myself :)

Knowing what I know about DC and it's Constantine, the movie and DC characters are faaar to different. Story wise too at least to me. The movie portrayed a more realistic, lack of a better word, depiction of hell, demons, and angels than the comic did. DC version is cool and all, but this version just seemed more grounded and human

  • @StarkeRealm

    I can't prove this, but I suspect I know why the film got panned at release. The film came out in 2005, this was immediately after The Matrix trilogy hit, and while Reloaded did amazingly, there was a lot of dissatisfaction with the ending of Revolutions. Combine that with Keanu's pop culture reputation at the time. It's easy to forget now, but in 2005, Reeves wasn't regarded as a fantastic actor, he was more likely to be recognized as, "that lump of wood with an amazing range of shocked reactions." Unfortunately, that was a stereotype that the Matrix trilogy didn't really help break. So, you've got a film that absolutely requires you to take its lead seriously, with an actor that was seriously underrated, and had just come off a series of blockbusters that went out like a wet fart. This was also 2005, when the hot buzzword for adaptations was, "authenticity," with a character who wasn't authentic to the source material. Keanu is (and was) a fantastic actor, and can sell the role, but he is not Sting. He will never be Sting, and in 2005, people didn't see him doing a pretty solid rendition of Constantine, they saw Neo. The re-appraisals now are coming from people having enough distance from 2005 to actually watch the film instead of viewing it through the lens of being disappointed by the lead's last outing, and with enough time to separate us all from thinking that the key to a perfect adaptation was slavish transcription. Turns out, it's actually pretty good, but in the moment, the movie people watched, and reacted to, wasn't the film that existed.

    Where exactly do half-breeds come from, if they're not from possessions? They just will themselves onto our plane? And why would possession be neccessary then if Demons can just escape hell at any point and materialize as a half-breed? Also, Constantine indicated that demon that was made out of bugs was totally different from possessions/half-breeds. They were a full fledged Demon appearing w/o any constraints indicating something was amiss/breaking the rules (Mammon or Gabriel?). So once again, if half-breeds don't arise from possession, and they're not full demon like bug-boy, wtf are they and how do they just show up? I also wish there was a reason given why the "soldier" demons had no eyes/brain (missing half their head). I assumed at the time it was due to them having no souls, but half-breeds don't appear to suffer this, so the distinguishing characteristics is odd given there's no explanation for it.

  • @toscadonna

    Genesis Chapter 6 and The Book of Enoch Chapter 6 tell you how the “half breeds” came about. The Sons of God found the daughters of men beautiful, took them for wives, and the women bore giants, the Nephilim, which had demonic souls. They ate humans out of house and home, then they started eating humans themselves. The Fallen Ones showed man astrology, mathematics, using makeup, how to make weapons, how to wage war, etc., and for their sins, their leaders were cast into the abyss.

  • @Armageist

    @Armageist

    @toscadonna Yeeeeah, using the Bibles references to Nephilim Giants doesn't really work here. For one, Half Breeds in the Bible are Demons themselves once they died. Every other supernatural being would be an Angel or Fallen Angel (Archons/Watchers). The Half breeds in Constantine can be Angels or Demons. In the bible, No Nephilim were Angels, only their Fathers were. Nephilim also certainly don't have divine protection from God. The Half Breed Angels in Constantine do, because they're seemingly working for Heavens interests (by consorting with Demons in a bar for some reason). Also, a Half breed Demon implies a full fledged Demon in the movie, to which we see (as the Bug Demon). The Demons in the bible aren't "half breed". They are Demons through and through, though they would be considered half breed of Angel/Man. But there's no half demon/humans. Demons in the Bible are the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim (which WERE half breed Angel/Humans, as Giants) destroyed by God doomed to walk the Earth until the final judgement/imprisonment.
