Nah, the scene where Eighter teaches him about mercy isn't in the manga. *Spoilers:* Let's not forget that later in this arc there's a certain character who Goku doesn't allow to get away

@@d-manthecaptain1382 which means i never said after eighter he was a merciful person. Or only because of eighter goku didnt kill. I said eighter was one of the pillars that introduced goku to showing mercy even to bad people which is true. He sowed the seeds. Then kami and popo and by the time he was an adult he stopped wiping villains out

@@FREE_WILL_DEFENDER That's another common misconception, it's never stated or implied in the manga, or the anime, that Kami or Popo did anything to teach Goku about mercy. I'm not quite sure where that one comes from. Anyway, as I said, in the manga Eighter doesn't try to convince White and Goku not to fight, and there is no moment where Eighter holds Goku back from further attacking, after White's knocked down. This moment, while interesting, can’t really impact Goku's growth, because it doesn't exist in the source material. The only time is when Eighter says that fighting is bad, and Goku replies “But if you don’t fight bad guys, and you get killed, what good is that?” There’s never a moment of Goku being swayed. Even if we take this filler moment into account, Eighter ended up having to go against his principles by finishing off White with that huge punch, so if anything, Goku could’ve come away from this experience thinking that pacifism isn’t a good idea. I think this is just an example of fans who haven’t watched the series in a long time remembering it as being more complex than it was. After all, Goku never showed any mercy to Yakon. He only spares Vegeta so he can fight him again. He spares Piccolo so he can fight him again, as well as to ensure Kami doesn’t die. He spares Freeza mainly so Toriyama can do that trope where the hero lets the bad guy live so that the bad guy can try one last attack to justify the hero destroying them. That example is Goku showing mercy, but there was no character arc leading towards it.

Android 8 is so interesting because he can be sourced as the main reason Goku starts to learn mercy and also the inspiration for Android 16's personality and the entire Android saga as a whole.

I don't know if the dub ever mentions this, but in the Japanese version it is stated, though only once so it's easy to miss, that No. 8 was once a human, so he's more in line with No. 17 and No. 18, then No. 16. Neat, huh? The word "Jinzoningen" can mean cyborg, or robot, however the English word Android only refers to robots, hence why cyborgs are considered androids in this series. It's also worth noting that JP Goku can't pronounce jinzoningen, but funnily enough android is pretty easy to say. In the Japanese version he calls him "Ha-Chan", the word for eight in Japan is "hachi", and "Chan" is a honorific for women, children, or close friends. In English his nick name would likely be "Eight Dear", "Little Eight" or something along those lines. Here they call him Eighter, but in the VizMedia translation of the original comics they call him 8-Man, which is a reference to a classic superhero created by writer Kazumasa Hirai and manga artist Jiro Kuwata. 8-Man was the first cyborg superheo in manga, much like how Eighter is the first android in Dragon Ball.

This part of the red ribbon stuff is a tad weak but it gets better after this when a certain character wearing pink is introduced and the fighting starts to get better too especially with the choreography
