The Ancient Roman Treasures Buried Under An English Field | Time Team | Odyssey
The National Trust Roman fort of Branodunum has produced some impressive aerial photographs of cropmarks, promising substantial buildings and multiple finds from the second to the fourth centuries AD. Some outstanding geophysics results are also hugely encouraging. If anything it was larger than the current Brancaster. The close proximity of the sea would have been vital to travel and commerce, and there was certainly much marine traffic. Among over 2000 finds are an extremely rare pewter dish, a belt ornament, Roman scale armour, and cockerel spurs indicating cockfighting. They are joined by County Archaeologist David Gurney, Philippa Walton from the British Museum, and Roman finds expert Mark Corney.

2/12/24. Love this show.. so sad so many of the original cast members have passed. Tony is an awesome host. 👏
Seeing those images emerge on that last geophys survey was absolutely magical! What an amazing tool that is!
The hosts make the story so interesting and entertaining , and very British. I love it.
Absolutely fascinating; wish I could be there to help. Love this program. Addendum: I do wish they had more time to investigate and dig deeper into this site.

So much MAGIC and Healing vibes ❤. Thank you. Great video
Another episode with à sympathical crew, happy to search and happer when findings change the old way of seeing things. Most of the time the "etablishement" mok it and forgent it (how many treasures are buried even in museums cause they don't stick to their reality ? (an idea for a next episode ? It would be great). With time team the information come to us. So, Thanks for your work, your Joy and happyness and better understanding you bring to us.
Thank you for another fun, interesting and informative video. Please keep it up!
I love the digital overlays. It is amazing someone can look at something and be like "yup that's a bath house". LOL
My favourite channel on youtube!! Great episode.
Is it possible, 3 days of field work and no rain?
An outstanding epuside! Great editing and totally enjoyable.

Amazing 🤩
I really hope that somebody carried on finding out more about this site (digging and discovering). Three days is not enough and this site should not be lost again.
What a wonderful show with great personalities. LOVE IT and thank you!
As a new fan to Time Team, Why is it they always have 3 days? Is that just how the digging permit system works? What happens when they find super important finds? Do they come back later or have other teams come back later? Love this show!

From other episodes I've gleaned that they're very careful not to get into the "guts" of very important sites they discover. They respect the work of the other archeologistss who might want to dig these sites and do their own discoveries and write their papers.
Rome was awesome
Tony, David and Morgan, the top 3 presenters
Francis Pryor is NEVER on holiday
I wish the producers hadn't overdubbed dramatic music.
Outstanding video, very interesting and informative. The finds are being kept where? Love to see them in person.
Very interesting …

That’s why Mick quit the show. In an interview he said, they dumbed down the show by bringing in new hosts, a pretty blond and a good looking guy. They also got rid of some Great people on the show, Stewart, Carenza, Victor, and more. Mick left the show in 2012, unfortunately Mick passed in June 2013. I highly recommend reading up on Mick Aston, to say he lead an interesting life would be quite the understatement!!
So cool! just keep digging lol
thumbs up and subscription already a long time ago...
He says what I was thinking all along. It's incredible what they achieved in 3 days. I have to wonder why they were limited to only 3 days. Nevertheless, I'm intrigued and it leaves me wanting more .

to give you perspective. Archaeology is very expensive and for one to happen you have to prove to the foundation that a site is work dging and spending money on. Time team's way of helping is to be the initial archeologists of sites wherein they are unsure whether to pursue or not. basically if TT finds nothing, no harm done as they earn through the show, while if they did find it it gives scientists and foundations opportunity and proof that a place is worth spending more time on.
I have never understood how British society just fell apart after the Romans left. You would think that after 400 years of Roman rule the Brits would have flourished! After all, they knew the technology because they did all the work!

Ian the Dig!
Ok, this might be a stupid question but do sites like this ever get _completely_ excavated ... dig out the whole 20+ acres, haul away the soil, find and conserve everything? Obviously not in 3 days for an hour long program.
I bet there were a few hangovers on day 3!!!
Your right! July 19th, 2023
Do you use metal detectors before digging.
I'm wondering you talk about the digging you're doing as being the last that will be done at this site However with your findings being as brilliant as they are is it unlikely that someone will have a look?
I often wonder why they don't use hand held metal detectors while in the trench........it would help to speed digging....

I love Time Team, but these later episodes were a bit hyper - makes me breathless. And the needless sound-effects and dramatic music don't help either. I guess they were unnecessarily told to make it more exciting (Mick's jumper syndrome).

It's because they all have regular jobs and they all did Time Team as a side thing. So the show was made to just be 3 days because of that. I'm sure they would all love to dig more than they get to but again they have other jobs and things that they have to do. And yeah usually the sites will be further excavated by others.

Because sometimes something is going to be put there. The show is always for 3 days. They are not keeping anything for themselves. What finds are made goes to a museum.
I'm really hating that these guys are rushing this is a show on not what to do
I wonder if this turns other archeologists stomachs due to the speed and then what seems like a haphazard way of digging. Three days. I wored for an archeological survey in Canada for five years and they were very careful about the sites, but then again most of the sites one still had traditional peoples living nearby etc. and some lands were considered sacred.
I sure hope someone finishes these finds and not just fill in the hole.

Why have I never seen you use metal detectors to find roman coins, that are so beautiful to behold. All you do is displace the depth were someone could easily find them. I know I wouldn't let you do that to my farm, until a search was performed for coins first. But it seems too many people are metal hunting, cause of the popular videos on KZread. I looked🎉in the background of one video, and I saw like 60 people in one field. Not for the science but, for profit I bet.
