The Amish: How They Survive | Full Movie | Buton Buller

Ойын-сауық

The Amish live far outside the cultural mainstream. During the last century, they grew from 5,000, inhabiting a handful of states, to 200,000 souls living in 25 states and one Canadian province.
Preferring community to technology, the Amish live their lives in close fellowship with each other. Within their religious communities, everyone agrees on what technologies to adopt, what clothes to wear and what horse-powered transportation to drive.
A decade ago, approximately 90% of Amish earned their incomes from farming operations. Today, in some communities, less than 5% do so. Learn how the Amish have successfully responded to a tightening agricultural economy. See how their strict adherence to community values contributes to their doubling in size every 20 years.
This documentary takes you on an intimate journey into Ohio Amish life and culture. You will discover how rapid growth and economic pressures threaten their community. You will also meet a people who, as a result of creative disengagement with the culture around them, thrive.

I live with them in rural NY. I see them in the dead of night riding on the side of the road. No idea how they can see where they're going. No street lights way out here. They put lanterns on the back of the buggie so you can see them from behind. There's one guy I've seen out riding when it was almost 0 degrees out. Very nice people though. I just bought a bunch of birdhouse gourds from them, dirt cheap.😂

I'm a Christian and fascinated by this documentary. God has been calling me to simplify my own lifestyle and I think there is a lot to learn here. Personally I'm spending less time watching TV and more time reading and studying Bible and doing useful hobbies like sewing, knitting etc. Their simple uncluttered homes where you can hear a clock ticking and fire crackling seem wonderfully peaceful.

Many are living more simply by necessity. We wash clothes in a machine run on a generator and hang them to dry in a line stretched between trees. We grow as much food as we can. The Amish are NOT the most empathetic people you will ever meet when it comes to animal welfare. They will take care of their horses and cattle only as much as it takes to keep them working and producing. A buggy horse might be tied up for hours in the hot sun with no shade or water, tormented by flies because the owners won’t put fly spray on them. I’ve never seen my neighbors call a veterinarian. If an animal is sick they usually only try some home remedy. Sometimes it works, usually it doesn’t. That applies mostly to horses, cattle, and other livestock. As for cats and dogs, they are not pets. You’ll never see one inside the home or even in a doghouse and they don’t buy dog/cat food for them. They just wander about the place and are expected to feed themselves on whatever they can scrounge up. They find shelter in whatever place they can, whether it is -20 or 95 outside. The Amish will not interact with them by talking to them (other than an order) or petting them. They are never spayed or neutered so you can expect to see litter after litter running around the barnyard. Very few will survive past a year or two. Some buy a dog from a breeder for varmint control. Those are the puppy mills that others have mentioned. I’ve seen one or two of those mills and I can’t imagine a worse place to live. Great Pyrenees and Australian Shepherds are common varmint dogs. And as for outright cruelty, that’s more common than you might think. I’ve seen Amish beat a recalcitrant horse or dog mercilessly. I once saw our neighbor kids tormenting a small kitten while it cried and cried (I never saw that kitten again).

A horse that has his head "held high" can not work or pull as comfortably or efficiently as a horse who is allowed to carry his head lower, in a comfortable working position. Men ruin good horses by jacking their heads up for "fashion" - because they think a horse with his head held up too high is snazzy looking. I much prefer a horse who is allowed to perform his job to the best of his ability and not to feed some idiot man's over inflated ego!

This is a great documentary. My father was raised Amish and left. Now as an adult, I am reconnecting with the Amish and have made many friends offering to help me find my extended family. I have been somewhat “adopted” by an Amish family I’ve known for a few years. The kindest people I’ve ever met.

Is it possible for an outsider and a foreigner, from Europe, to join a society like the Amish? They look like the only type of community that can possibly survive during the time when people have to choose between the mark of the beast and dying of hunger.

@@elvenkind6072 indeed. the more crazier the current world gets, the more we can see how these groups actually had avoided so many of our modern problems. price of healthcare, nursing homes, finances, identity problems, gender problems, teen drugs and pregnancy, violence and so many things that modern people have troubles with, so much of these could have been decreased or avoided altogether, heck, even this global warming crap and being carbon negative. but then again, we would easily get invaded by russia or china if half the nation converted to this culture... that aside, even just partial adoption of their lifestyle would do wonders for the rest of the country. even their basic "dinner together every night" would curb so much problems in society specially with kids and violence and drugs and pregnancy. as well as divorce etc... i know. because i came from a culture that isnt amish but we practice the dinner together thing in asia and it does do wonders for peoples mental state.

@@elvenkind6072yes you can. Some communities will accept you. But not everyone. Some are more open to accept outsiders than others. The most difficult part would be the language Pennsylvania dutch, that old German/swissgerman/english mix. And You have to work quite hard, compared to the normal outside world. And you have to follow all the rules of the community and of the bible by heart. Otherwise you have to leave the community. It's not like "I don't like that commandment and I choose to ignore it" or "I will sneak in a tv to watch hockey" It's very hard if you know the outside world. People that are Born Amish grew up in the system, while you will probably have to learn everything from scratch. And that is quite difficult. But it can be done, if you really want to. You just need enough will to do it and a community that will accept you. And about the beast/ anti- Christ: Don't think you could escape the beast...🙈🙈 The beast will try to persecute, imprison, torture and kill every one that believes and that won't submit to it and that won't accept his mark. So the beast will probably immediately try to destroy the most traditional believers like the Amish. But we know that Jesus can raise the dead and give you eternal life. But it will be a very hard time once the Endtimes completely start. We will be persecuted and tortured and mocked just like Jesus was if we don't obey the beast. So running away won't make the beast go away. But I understand your idea, with the Amish 😅

Their work ethic is exceptional along with attention to detail. Years ago I bought my handmade furniture from the Amish. I've hauled various goods for different groups and colonies and always been treated well. We benefit greatly having them in our society! Their homegrown produce and cafes are also excellent. The Amish culture has to be respected in every sense of the word. They are not caught up in a rat race and live as nature intended us to. They have an extremely low carbon footprint. I think the rest of the world could learn a lot from the Amish communities. I just hope that they can continue to live as they choose. Unfortunately, I think greed from external reasons, will push them out of their way of life. I hope that they will be able to continue their beautiful way of life.

They take care of their own and keep the elderly people with them like in the old time in Italy where I grew up. I love to learn from them, they have so much to teach us all. I love also how they children are raised knowing their place in their societies. Women raise girls to care for the house and the family. The men teach their boys how to be men. No problem with crisis Identity for the children like now in our crazy society. They are also great workers and they do beautiful objects.

There's a warmth and a soul to every piece that they make, and it's genuinely indescribable. My family has bought Amish crafted furniture since I was a child, and it's a coming of age thing to go buy your first piece from one of the woodworkers for us.
