You know? This argument between Peter and Uncle Ben is way more serious than in the Raimi version. And Peter seems to be way more angrier to Uncle Ben, specifically because of his parents's missing. That's an improvement, in my honest opinion.

A realistic family actually has arguments and disagreements and that is precisely what is shown right here. This is not dysfunction; this is realistic. A kid acted irresponsible and like any other realistic family, there is someone who is in disagreement and gives the kid what is coming to him with a lecture. That is realistic. I’m sick and tired of good guys having perfect understanding parents and the bad guys coming from dysfunctional abusive families and stuff. That shot has been so overused.

Honestly this is my favorite uncle Ben.

As a 19 year old who saw this movie about 9 years ago back on DVD. I used to watch this movie all the time. As im getting older this movie perfectly captures how family acts. Teenagers make mistakes no matter what it is, it doesnt mean they are bad it means that they may be going through things and end up doing wrong actions that can hurt their own family emotionally. Ive made mistakes and now that im grown up and mature ive realized that you have to learn from your mistakes to become better. I know that this is just a spider man movie but it is definently the most realistic movie out of the spider man movies. And the acting on behalf uncle ben's actor and andrew garfield is spot on as well as other actors in the movie. Although uncle ben may seem a little tough on making peter apologise but he is teaching him to become a man and own up to his wrong doings to prepare him for the real world. Uncle ben in this movie is very caring and loving and and aunt may in this movie is the exact same but less tough. They are exactly like my parents and now that i see the responsibility of my parents. I must teach my brother to grow up and not making the same mistakes as i have. Sorry for the long text just wanted to get this thought out here.

I wish that they had used the original quote, as this version is a bit.. verbose, but that being said the dialogue is superb. It sounds so realistic, like an argument I would have coming home late to my grandparents after I took their car when I wasn’t supposed to. Great acting as well, it just seems so natural Also in this version it is not only the fact that Peter didn’t stop the criminal thst caused Ben’s death, but the argument itself is why Ben was even out there in the streets for this to happen. It makes it even more gut wrenching

Ben going out to find him is not only because he cares about Peter obviously, but because with him having just lectured him on responsibility, he knows the responsible action in that moment is to try and find him and say sorry for using his parents in a lecture to get him to listen knowing how sensitive it is to Peter considering he obviously feels like his parents just dumped him on their doorstep for no reason at all, and the fact that he knows, having just said it, that the city's obviously dangerous and The most crime ridden at night, so he's Not going to just let his nephew slash adopted son just wander out at probably 2:00 in the morning or so to sulk and either a get jumped by some thug or mugger or even probably go looking for someone to beat up, Ben died because yes Peter was in fact irresponsible and selfish and what he done prior, but the same time, because he loved Peter and really did mean what he said instead of just saying it to get Peter to stop being selfish, The way an actual parent would be

I know that the words "with great power, comes great responsibility" is very iconic and very true as well, but uncle Ben's speech here is kinda more realistic and more relatable for ordinary people like me. Well maybe we don't have powers, but when it comes to choosing between being selfish or to do the right thing, that's the responsibility every ordinary people can relate to. I know when we have powers we have use it responsibly, but in some situations, we don't need power to do what is right, we just simply have to choose

The best thing about the version of spiderman movie which no one mostly say was his real life scenes looked the most real and if you think of the situations you may feel like if I was in the same situation that's what I do in most scenes.

This is weirdly my favorite iteration of 'great power comes great responsibility'. Why? The 'great' is taken out of it (and everything else). The 'great' taken out it means that this quote doesnt apply to Peter/Spiderman. It applies to everyone who has even a little power and have the responsibiltiy to use that little power for good. That is what gets Uncle Ben killed in this movie. He used what little power he had left to try stop the robber because he saw that as a responsibiltiy he must have followed.

And it's a perfect line because it fits the character the best. It also makes more sense given how much uncle ben loved peter and thinks highly of him so the word great is used appropriately. TASM is one of the worst if not the worst interpretation of the character. Uncle ben here is also an idiot trying to grab some stranger gun lmao. Robber wasnt even after him nor did he know what the situation was but still fought some stranger over their gun.

I disagree. It is a good idea in theory and I like what you want out of the line, but the quote here is just so long to convey the exact same idea. And that's why I disagree, because it is conveying the same idea. Great is defined as "of an extent, amount, or intensity considerably above the normal or average." -- this works great for Spidey, because he is above average for all of human faceting. So he truly has GREAT POWER In him in your very first look at the phrasing. But what does power actually mean? "the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events." So great power just means above average capacity to direct or influence the course of events. And so Raimi Uncle Ben lives by this all the same. It isn't just that only the first idea of GREAT POWER can have great responsibility and thus do great things. No, it's that anyone can be in a position where they can be the difference maker. And Uncle Ben felt he was in that position, and died for it. He tried to change Sandman from his path, rather than just let a crook have his car. His great power was believing he could change this troubled man's life, and that isn't inaccurate. He did. He changed Sandman's course for better or worse, as he changed the partner of Sandman's course for better or (significant) worse. I don't write all that in typical youtube arguing animosity. Like I said, I like what you want from the quote, I just think it still applies to the original and so I'd rather just stick to the simple one.

@RyanKaufman I'd personally disagree, while I do believe the original quote is better, this one is great in its own way, not only does it depict in my eyes the more realistic lecturing of a parent or guardian, at least by my experience; but it conveys the same message but in a new manner. Regardless of it is better or worse, it is one of the most underrated movies scenes, in my eyes. This film is heavily underrated tbh. Yes it has its problems, same with TASM2, but they even when scenes are just looked at on their own, are absolutely beautiful. This definitely helps with Andrew Garfields acting for such a poor script, especially in TASM2. In my eyes, this is a great example of how I feel a guardian/parent would realistically act, especially within the sense of just being normal people.

Probably one of the most realistic depictions of a family in a movie.

To think that in the end, Uncle Ben’s death is completely Peter’s fault. Peter abused his power when it came to the basketball scene meaning Ben had to leave work early meaning Peter had to pick up Aunt May. Ben procedes to indirectly embarrass Peter in front of Gwen which gets him a date and like any teenager he gets distracted, testing out his powers and then goes to visit Dr Connors meaning he misses to take May home. Peter then argues with Ben even though he is in the wrong and when he storms out, Ben goes after him. Seen as how Peter’s frustarted, he does even attempt to stop the robber especially after he gives Peter a freebie. Had he stopped the robber in the shop, he wouldn’t have interacted with Ben and killed him in that moment. This makes the “responsibility” line hit harder because Peter was irresponsible with his power from the start. From this description it may seem like it just happened but it feels like dominoes - one event inevitably led to the next starting with Peter abusing his power to Ben’s death.

Uncle Ben's death was completely Flash Thompson's fault. Flash was the king of bullies. He bullied lots of kids weaker than him since always. He hurted Peter for helping another bullied kid and Peter , since his legal guardians, the principal nor Flash's parents done nothing about that he decided to teach Flash a lesson . Flash is the one that truly started everything.

What a nightmare scenario for Peter Parker and his aunt

Between the late Cliff Robertson and Martin Sheen, which I love both performances. I have to go with Sheen. His version seems more like a realist and also he reminds me a lot of my stepdad.

Now why wasn’t this Andrew’s Peter’s canon event in AtSV? I get it was all about Captain Stacy, essentially, but their canon events are the things that MADE them who they are. So I personally think this death should’ve been Andrew’s canon event. His irresponsibility is what got his uncle killed. It was a major butterfly effect

I actually like this version of ben being a bit more flawed he compares peter to richard in a way where it negatively hurts peter because he never had many experiences with him. Meanwhile you have aunt may who just wants everyone to be fine with each other here but its clear things cant really get through.

Yeah, that doesn't make it any less emotional though, like Andrew's canon event, Aunt May's death was completely his fault

For how bad the rest of the writing is, looking back, this scene was written very well.

At first I had trouble understanding why Uncle Ben felt so compelled to try and grab this guy’s gun when it could have just been his legally owned firearm. Looking back though he probably heard the other guy shouting about a thief. Still I think it may have been better if they had the shop owner catch up with the robber only for the robber to pull out his gun and threaten the guy to back off… *then* had him trip and drop it in front of Uncle Ben. And for added measure maybe they could have had the shop owner run to try and help Ben after he was shot to show he was actually a decent person probably having a bad day, making Peter feel more guilty for letting the robber go.

In a way this scene Alone is wholesome

One of the things I will give praise to in this depiction of Spider-Man, is that while it does fall into the whole cliché of a kid telling their older relative, “You’re not my mom/dad. Stop acting like one.”, Ben and May don’t put up with Peter’s BS, regardless of what the reason was. Because while nothing will change the fact that you may not be a kid’s actual father/mother, your trust needs to be something kids like Peter need to earn.

I think there's only one reason we didn't see the Amazing Spider-Man 3 come to fruition it's because the second movie performed horribly at the box office and I think that the film creators just didn't want to make another film after what happened with the last one so that's why they decided to cancel production on The Amazing Spider-Man 3 but of course that's just a theory I have there could be plenty of reasons why the Amazing Spider-Man 3 was canceled but I think that's the most accurate in my opinion

I remember seeing a TASM 3 trailer in theaters. But based on what we know about its development cycle, that should be impossible, yet I remember it.

I can only imagine how terrifying it might be to lose a love one to a senseless crime how much pain that might actually cause.

It's nearly a line for line copy from the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. When Ben gave the speech in the Ultimate comics he also gave credit to Peter's dad. And like Peter pointed out there's a hint of irony to it as the man who lived by that philosophy isn't there to share it with him. We know that his father died (unless you consider the Amazing Spider-Man 2 alternate ending canon), but the rest of the world didn't know.

during the time this movie was made sony knew tobey's fans will eat this movie alive if they just copy paste the same and since this is such an important quote they changed it a little bit.

It really tread all the same steps made by Spider-Man about 10 years earlier but it is also a fantastic movie when viewed on its own, especially due to the realism angle added to it whereas Spider-Man had a more delightfully soapier in some aspects (like Bonesaw or JJJ or the costume design). Not saying that made Spider-Man worse than this movie.

When he mentions the word "responsibility". Same meaning.

To be fair I don't like this version of uncle Ben . 1.He berates Peter for teaching Flash a lesson , something Ben,the principal nor Flash's parents never did; 2.He brings a very painful subject into chat , something very cruel , unfair and disrespectful not just towards poor Peter but towards his deceased parents as well; 3.Instead of letting Peter alone for a while to calm down he goes after him; 4.While brave and selfless , him trying to stop the robber was dangerous . Also the robber wanted nothing but money , not to kill someone . Overall this Ben Parker was , despite well intentioned , a bit of a jerk .
