The Allman Brothers Band was an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman (founder, slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, keyboards, songwriting), as well as Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), Berry Oakley (bass guitar), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums). Subsequently based in Macon, Georgia, they incorporated elements of blues, jazz, and country music, and their live shows featured jam band-style improvisation and instrumentals.
Their first two studio releases, The Allman Brothers Band (1969) and Idlewild South (1970) (both released by Capricorn Records), stalled commercially, but their 1971 live release At Fillmore East was an artistic and commercial breakthrough. It features extended versions of their songs "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post", and is considered among the best live albums ever made.
Group leader Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident later that year - on October 29, 1971 - and the band dedicated Eat a Peach (1972) to his memory, a dual studio/live album that cemented the band's popularity and featured Gregg Allman's "Melissa" and Dickey Betts's "Blue Sky". Following the motorcycling death of bassist Berry Oakley one year and 13 days later on November 11, 1972, the group recruited keyboardist Chuck Leavell and bassist Lamar Williams for 1973's Brothers and Sisters. The album included Betts's hit single "Ramblin' Man" and instrumental "Jessica", which went on to become classic rock radio staples and placed the group at the forefront of 1970s rock music. Internal turmoil overtook them soon after; the group dissolved in 1976, reformed briefly at the end of the decade with additional personnel changes, and dissolved again in 1982.
The band re-formed once more in 1989, releasing a string of new albums and touring heavily. A series of personnel changes in the late 1990s was capped by the departure of Betts. The group found stability during the 2000s with bassist Oteil Burbridge and guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks (the nephew of their original drummer) and became renowned for their month-long string of shows at New York City's Beacon Theatre each spring. The band retired for good in October 2014 after their final show at the Beacon Theatre.
Butch Trucks died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on January 24, 2017 in West Palm Beach, Florida at the age of 69. Gregg Allman died from complications arising from liver cancer on May 27, 2017 at his home in Georgia, also at 69. The band was awarded seven gold and four platinum albums, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. Rolling Stone ranked them 52nd on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004.
Gregg Allman, who was buried in June of 2017 across a walkway from his older brother, Duane, and the band’s original bass player, Berry Oakley, as well as drummer Butch Trucks, are all interred at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia.

Awesome job Scott! I actually lived in the same town as Gregg until 2016. I would run into him at the supermarket while he was shopping alone, I did food deliveries to his house (I had the gate code 😉) and have a few photos with him and a signed copy of his book. He passed a year after I left there so thank you for taking us to pay our respects to this very nice man. May he rest in peace 🕊

I dare to say that the Allman Brothers are the greatest southern rock band. I believe that they were the first. I was 15 in 1971 when I discovered them. That was in Chicago, where I was born and grew up. The Allman Brothers tree of life has provided us with many wonderful offspring: Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Allman Betts Band, The Devon Allman Project, and more. Thanks for the visit!

Georgia is one of those places that has piqued my curiosity for a long time for all of its history and scenery. I don’t know the Allman Brothers’ music that well but this video definitely makes me want to check them out! The 60s were these BEST times for rock and roll music 🎸 Love the epitaph, “Set free,” very musical and inspiring.

Thank you for showing the graves and album covers, I love that! I have loved the Allman Brothers since the 70's, they were the pioneers of Southern Rock! WI met Gregg Allman at Lake Compounce in CT, he couldn't have been nicer and so cool. It was a big gathering of sober bikers. I still listen the albums on a record player. As for the band, they sure did have a tragic bunch of years, while giving us timeless songs to never be forgotten.

I love the way the Allman brothers graves are well protected and gated off, so tragic the way they died, I love the midnight rider song. RIP to the Allman brothers 💐💐💐💐💐💐The cemetery is so unique from all the others you see, it’s so nice to have something different. RIP little Martha, such a beautiful grave of her💐💐💐💐. RIP to the Bond family 💐❤️💐💐💐💐. It really upsets me when people vandalise other peoples graves, it’s so disrespectful and nasty. Thank you Scott for taking us there. 🤟🏼✌️👍⭐️🥰

For them to all be buried together makes a huge statement. They were true brothers and friends who weren't just acting that way for the camera. What a beautiful section for them, too. If there's a rock and roll heaven, they're up there doing it together for sure! Very interesting on the shooting location and the lady named Elizabeth. Love the grave of the little girl Martha .. and the little baby, so sad 😢 ... It's so cool to see the back album cover location. What a beautiful place this is. Skinny roads like that in cemeteries drive me crazy btw. RIP to Mr. Bond and God bless the mess in that section too. This is one of the best videos you have done. They really fixed the allman brothers grave site up. There was a small stairway in the middle of it.(just refer to older video and pictures) so when greg was initially laid to rest, he was at the edge of that staircase. So they took out the staircase, fillled everything in, and this is what there is. Seems they got rid of a lot of shrubbery around the graves of duane allman and berry oakley. When i look at the hills in that cemetery, i think of "moguls", the slopey hills skiers go down in competitions. Thank you for showing us the Bond grave, where they shot the back album cover. As i once read somewhere, "they're Allmans, they dont need much". With their talent, and creativity, this statement holds true.😊

I was there 2 years ago on a sweltering August day. Mid 90s. Humid. A Sunday. Couldn't find the graves. Some guy driving through told me where to go. Hard to find. I spent 30 minutes there. All alone. It's a very eerie cemetery with weeds, etc grown over everywhere. Old graves. Can't describe the feeling I had. Left some coins on their graves. The railroad tracks in back is where the famous photo of the band was taken in 1969. The Big House is a great tour also. I missed Cher by a day. She was there to visit Greg's best friend who was in the hospital. They told me Dickey Betts doesn't come back to the house. Too many bad memories. Feels haunted to him.

Did you hear about how she had been homeless and living in San Jacinto? Her sister is another famous actress Crystal Bernard (tv show Wings). They both were so beautiful, I remember when Robyn was on General Hospital in the 80s. She was also a very talented singer. She had a story line on General Hospital with Shaun Cassidy.

Scott, I can't wait to watch this later tonight when I have some me time. But as usual, I am playing it out for you now. Congratulations on 7 years of hard work and giving all of us a million smiles and laughs along the way. You'll always be the best there is in my book! ❤ 🎉

I think there is a definite story of Joseph Bond that would be worthwhile to cover...Joseph Bond was one of the wealthiest men in middle Georgia before the Civil War. He was the state's largest cotton grower and most successful planter. It's reported that in 1857, he set a world record with a cotton sale of 2,200 bales for $100,000 At the age of 44, Bond was killed by a former overseer who he had fired for mistreating a slave...and much more to the story of his life.
