42 years ago.. Berlin Airlift, RFK Stadium Washington DC.. Nobody knew who the Allman Bros. were.. We were there for Grand Funk Railroad.. Coming out, they ripped into Statesboro Blues, the whole stadium got up, shaking the place to the foundation! From there they went to Miami.. Eric Clapton was in the front row at their show, went back stage, invited them to the "Layla" sessions.. The rest is history.. We miss you brother...

@@twiztidlife66 : JW was a huge influence on me as a guitar player. Very different styles, Duane and Johnny. Both influenced by Elmore James of course. Johnny used a thumb pick ( because Chet Atkins did) and a metal slide because Johnny said it was "nastier', Duane used a glass coriciden bottle and because it is glass it is much mellower and sweet. Johnny was also a lightning fast standard electric guitar player, much more so than Duane, however Duane's 'voicing' was superb, and in Statesboro blues, you can hear Duane use the 'question answer technique' which is in this case, the vocalist singing something and the slide guitar answers the phrase, so Duane's 'voicing' was sublime . Glad I grew up when I did... Johnny and Duane were certainly the best slide guitar players of their time, and indelible in music history. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q5egtMyppLrSh5s.html

What about Jeff Beck? I hate these historic absolutes! Duane was brilliant in his day. But that doesn't mean there aren't others that have followed and have now surpassed him. That's like saying ancient Gregorian chants was the best music ever created. Music/musicianship evolves.

Saw Jeff Beck with Rod Stewart. Also saw him on his own. He was good, almost as good as say Dave Mason. Clapton was at times very good, but then he'd get into the slow-hand act. The other Yardbirds guitarist, Page, was like Hendrix, noise. He was surrounded by pretty good musicians, except Plant. A little of the music was tolerable. Like Townsend, he surrounded himself with outstanding musicians like Entwistle and Moon, but then a mediocre singer like Daltry. I like all of these people for their studio recordings, but then I liked the Rolling Stones and the Beatles studio stuff too. Live they stunk until they add supportive musicians. Moon, Entwistle, Bonham, etc. made each concert, except Hendrix worth attending. It's good to be old, my memory is back to when I went to concert almost every weekend and saw some great ones like the original ABB with Duane who was still the best. Just don't do the brown acid, but then it's your own trip man!

Ever see em in Grant Park or Macon? I was teenager in Columbus GA...saw them a few times. Duane's secret , so I I've read, was that he tried to make his guitar "slide through notes like a harmonica." That and he taught himself slide while using a pill bottle from the drugstore. Greg brought him some medicine cause he was ailin. Then as luck would have it when I went in the Navy, I got stationed at Mayport FL and got to see some early Skynyrd. Mix in some Hank Jr. and you have a hell of a trifecta!

I had the great honor of seeing this most wonderful band 17 times with my Dad
