The Airgun Show - lamping rats and the Walther Rotex RM8

Фильм және анимация

Mat Manning proves that you don’t have to have the latest night vision gear to shoot rats after dark, as he heads out on a farmyard foray that stretches into the night. It looks like the session could be going off the rails until Mat spots what turns out to be a busy rat run, with numerous scaly-tails falling to his airgun as the light starts to fade, and even more brought to book after nightfall, thanks to the trusty scope-mounted lamp.
On the test bench is the recently renamed Walther Rotex RM8. Walther is a big name in the shooting world, yet the RM8 promises top-end PCP performance with a modest price-tag. Find out what we thought of the affordable multi-shot.

I Purchased the Rotex RM8 after watching the online reviews. I have since been to my local gun club at our indoor range and shot groups at 50 and 75 yards this gun is fantastic and almost as accurate as my Daystate Wolverine B and for the price I paid £395 I have to say I love it. I have since fitted a Weihrauch suppressor to bring the noise down a little as it is now going to be used as a hunter only. I Hope to get the stock dipped in camo and put some clips on from the range as soon as possible. The only slight issue with the gun if I'm going to be totally honest is it is quite stiff when engaging the bolt forward but after some stripping and a little bit of a tinker with the action it's now smooth and precise. As for the plastic trigger it makes no difference apart from being warm on the cold mornings. Great gun for little cash in my opinion.

I used to be wary of shooting through gates too. Then I ran my ballistics through the free chairgun pro program. This showed me the lowest point the pellet hits below the scope zero. If you have a mil-dot scope, it is then easy to determine whether the pellet will hit the gate or not. I now shoot confidently through gates, as long as they are closer to me than my scope zero.

That's true, as the UK guns are sub 12 ftlb. However, I do believe that even a 5 foot pound gun could kill a rat, if you hit it right.

12ft/ib isnt a massive disadvantage, i own a 12ft/ib rotek and my rabbit headshot record is 76 yds, they have the muzzle energy to do the job. And yes you are right 5ft/ib can do in a rat, i think 5-6ft/ib is all the force needed to penetrate a rabbits head but you still need accurate shot placement

About the Rotex, it seems like its the same gun as the AirMagnum 850 just with a different Stock, a metal magazine and airtank. There are quite some quality things i dont like about the 850. At first cocking doesnt feel smoth after some time, i have put some grease on it but the rough feeling of metal rubbing against metal returned, its hard for me to describe as a non native english speaking person. Also the cocking lever wears down the finish of the lower part of the resting position of the lever and can also cause slight deformations on the metal. I cant get rid of the feeling that the Rotex will share the same issues.

Right let's see if I have got this correct at 3:40, because the parallax set at 'x' yards if you shoot nearer you have to compensate for that by raising the target point (x+1) and lower if you shoot further away (x-1). Something which you would practice and understand through target practice, AND also I should also be looking to understand the trajectory of the individual pellets I am using plus we not even discuss outside influences such as wind. Dead easy ain'tit.

Find ballistic info for your gun, ammo, elevation, temperature, etc. Look for 0.5" low, 0.5" high, 0.5" low again range. Then "zerp" 0.5" high POI over POA. Around 22 yds depending on all of the variables.

I like your videos. I've done a bit of ratting using a small red led flashlight. I've used it strapped to the barrel, or mounted to the scope with an upside down scope ring. I have also used it set stationary in the open door way of our chicken coop. Mounted on the air rifle, the eyes glow bright;ly, but the movement of tye gun (and attached light) sometimes spooks them away. Mounted in the doorway, the eyes don't glow nearly as brightly, but they don't spook as easily. I've ordered this "headlight" from Amazon/USA, and it comes with red and green lenses. Some say the green works best, as many animals don't get alarmed by that color. The light can be worn on the head, on a hat, or attached to something stationary. Here is the unit I ordered: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N3HUE1W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01 My airgun of choice is a Crosman Custom Shop 2400KT CO2 carbine, which is powered by one 12 gram CO2 cartridge. I ordered and installed a muzzle brake made by TKO (USA), and that makes the gun so quiet, I can shoot on my acre with neighbors on all sides of me, without anyone getting alarmed. "Silencers" are illegal here, but muzzle brakes are allowed, and this one is a sweetheart! The rifle is a single shot bolt action, but I usually wait till I nail a rat, and call it good for the night. As I said, it's on a small scale. I got about 10-12 last year.

I never liked Umarex or Walther airguns. Like the dominater 1250. But as I heard from others that is a underrated pcp. I am looking now alot at this Rotex model. And after a lot of reading reviews and watching yt vids I was getting more into this gun. But then I hear" the composite plastic trigger........" And I am back at total disliking this rifle. I didnt like the strange big plastic part at the front. Between the barrel and the stock. It is to fill up the od gap they, that the designers didn't know what to do with. Shame. Because it seems to shoot quiet ok.

You have two zeros' with any projectile mate, first and second. Close range ratting will see you apply 'hold-over' NOT 'hold-under' this is because the line of the scope sits 'above' the line of the barrel and thus at close range you need to 'hold-over' to lift the barrel that little bit. The guy knows his stuff pal.

The aim was to kill the rats as cleanly as possible, and avoid risk of wounding by going for head shots - which does make for challenging shooting. Also, if you rush the shot and miss the rat, it's likely to spook and not come back out, so it does pay to be patient.
