Airgun Action | Rabbit hunting | Walther Rotex RM8 UC air rifle review

Спорт

Rich Saunders is controlling rabbits at a falconry centre in this week’s episode and puts his Daystate / MTC Optics combo to good use to bring the pests to book. He ends up making an impressive bag from a tiny patch of ground, and makes use of an unusual hide while he’s at it.
Also in this week’s episode, Mat Manning is taking a close look at the Walther Rotex RM8 UC. This well-priced PCP boasts a recoilless, magazine-fed firing cycle and has had a regular place in Mat’s kit lineup for years.

I like that you showed the less clean shot, it gives a realistic look into the sport. You also calmly showed even the experts aren't perfect.

There's no denying it doesn't happen, no matter how hard we try to avoid it. Thankfully I was able to finish that rabbit out quickly. Thanks for watching.

I have owned and used an early version of the RM8 for a good few years and agree with your positive comments. However you didn't mention that it is fully regulated which gives excellent shot to shot consistency, although I have had to replace an internal o-ring which failed a couple of years ago, something I've heard others have experienced also. Used to be £399 for the magnificent minelli wood stock version but still good value.

Excellent choice for a sub £500 gun but a little heavy. I would recommend bsa scorpion ts / kral np03 or gamo coyote instead. Walther do a version with a lighter receiver but its only available in mainland Europe.

You're right, it is a little heavy and maybe not a great choice for smaller shooters. That additional weight seems to be indicative of its solid build quality, though. Thanks for watching. Mat

What I don't like about the RM8 is the safety which goes on every time you pull the bolt back. The bolt itself is really stiff and the shot count in .177 isn't great. I will admit though that it's a really accurate rifle and reliable.

  • @ShootingCountryTV

    @ShootingCountryTV

The bolt on my UC runs a lot smoother than the one on one of the earlier versions, so there appears to have been some refinement. Like you, I did initially find the auto safety a bit frustrating, but I quickly got used to it. Thanks for watching. Mat

Have they solved the barrel problem as I’ve understood and seen on other sites that the barrel needs cleaning on a regular basis as it was affecting accuracy in a big way?

Hi Jonathan. Like Mat, I've shot an RM8 UC for several years. I can't say the barrel needs cleaning any more often than my other rifles. And its plenty accurate for rat, squirrel and rabbit control. In fact, my local club has three RM8s which it uses as club guns and they provide excellent service.

I think that's a great idea donating the extra meat to the aviary! I don't hand that problem. My dog Charlie will eat any wild game, cooked or raw.😊 He is a very spoiled dog.

Lucky Charlie! My yellow lab, also Charlie, was partial to basically anything he could get in his mouth! Personally I find it hard to kill anything simply for the sake killing it - even pests. With a few exceptions (rats, corvids and ferals), everything I shoot is consumed by me/family/friends or birds of prey.

  • @ShootingCountryTV

It would be helpful if this show's team could research facts about the proposed lead ammunition ban, from industry and representatives, to ascertain the current position. Presently, too much unhelpful speculation.

  • @ShootingCountryTV

Hi Marcus. I have been quite closely involved with the consultation. As yet, there is no clarity on what the outcome might be, though it is hoped that there will be no change for airgun ammunition. My line is that airgun shooters should be prepared to go lead-free when there is a substitute that gives similar performance at a similar price. As yet, I do not believe that the alternatives stand up to that test. Hopefully common sense will prevail. Thanks for watching. Mat
