THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN by Mark Twain - Book Review

Widely read in American schools and praised as a cornerstone of the Western canon, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain has produced a legacy of academic debate over its central subject: racism. In this video, I try to present arguments from scholars who have shown the flaws of Twain's masterpiece and why they're relevant to our current national conversation about CRT and systemic racism.
Let me know if you like this style of video, this is my first time filming myself in front of a camera so I won't claim to be perfect. If there's enough positive feedback I'll keep making these!

You could have literally created this video having not read a single page of Huckleberry Finn - and I suspect that is the case having ignored Twain's contribution to literature. 1) Culturally: the book itself is satirical, holding up a mirror to the antebellum south, the face it shows is going to be ugly. Yet throughout the reader can sense the discomfort Huck has with this civilization -- he has repeated expressions of loneliness, at one point literally accepts hell as punishment for considering Jim a real human. 2) Aesthetically: Twain broke American literature out of the lineage of Europe, creating our own American mythology, recording the magical power and charm of the Mississippi River. You provided zero analysis and simply read to us scholarly abstracts. Not only are you allowing stuffy academics to tell you how to feel about this book, but, worse, within your own prism of critical race theory, you are now profiting off of the work of black writers for having (again) providing no original analysis and simply relying on them for the meat and potatoes of your video. Hypocrite.
