Plot was about time-travel and saving the future. Story was about the relationships between mother & son and father and son, not to mention Adam learning to face his past and learning that was in fact the best part of him. Plot is what the movie is about. Story is why it matters. When a movie is bad, it's usually because it's just all plot and a lack of story

I lost my dad when i was young, too. And this movie does remind me of him. What I would give to go back to visit him one more time. But, this movie shows us a great thing about busy dads and young kids. It proves that all dads are proud and even if they are busy, they never stop loving. So, as an older "Adam", I hope you remember the good times with your dad, I pushed it away because it hurt. That's my advice kid. Embrace the sadness now, so you can remember the happiness later.

The final part with the kid hugging his mom got me emotional and it’s deep because Ryan told the kid to hug his mom for him. We can only imagine if you don’t hug your mom for the last time and then the pain you feel emotionally for at least saying I love you or a hug never happens? It’s great to say I love you or give them a hug and cherish everyday with them.

Dammit, a friggin kids movie got me in the feels. I lost my mom a little over 14 months ago, my father is a pos, and nothing makes sense anymore. But those wholesome, emotional moments dragged everything to the surface I so expertly shoved down to function on a daily basis. Shawn Levy is 2 for 2 now after Free Guy and TAP. Genuinely looking forward to Deadpool 3. With him at the helm, I don't even mind that he so obviously won't adapt DP kills The Marvel (or in this case rather The FoX-Men) Universe. Just double or triple down on the heartfelt scenes of DP2 and you're golden.

Also, I def agree that there were holes and weak points with the sci-fi storyline in terms of continuity, but I feel like this wasn’t a sci-go centric movie, but that the sci-fi was a vehicle to showcase the relationships and underlying themes of dealing with childhood trauma and self-loathing. Which was the best part.

" implying how much he regrets the things he did/said. That hits me but for the opposite (not relating to my parents) as regretting the things I didn't do or say in letting life pass by and I didn't realize it until I got sick and almost lost my life and how much I took for granted. The scene where he hugs his mom at the end, i f***ing lost it. i just broke down. then again during the convo with zoe, that moment when it calls back to earlier, like he remembered almost. then again when the credits were rolling and i thought back to the hug. it just made me think about my mom and how much i missed her. she passed 3 years ago, after a long fight with dementia. this was such a great movie. really well written and performed. the dialogue and performances was just on point. the action scene were cool and i did love the climax, but it was those character moments that made the movie. I loved how mark just figured it out. even how most of them seemed to get it. and during that end scene with mark and ryan that you guys mentioned. for me i was actually wondering if it was improv'd, it just felt so real and genuine, for both of them.

This movie was exactly what I needed exactly at the right time. I’m sure every man can relate to this film on so many levels, but especially those whom lost their father at an early age. This movie made me realize how much more I need to love and appreciate my mom while also letting me let go of all the pent up anger towards my father. This is why movies are my favorite thing in the world because films like this make me feel better and gives me hope.

Really enjoyed this movie as a fun badass time travel family film. Walker scobell did a absolute glorious great job to portray a young Ryan Reynolds in a very practical way. Ryan Reynolds still be the best thing to be so funny, and with the mix of him being so badass with his action with the lightsaber bo staff.

You mentioned back to the future in the scene with the mum. I like the not so subtle nod to the name of the mall (twin pine/lone pine) in back to the future when young and old Adam talks outside the motel at Pine ridge.

Free Guy was fun, but this was much better! The performances were top tier and the story was really heartfelt. Every character stole the show, maybe with the exception of the villain which well... they're bound to suck anyway. The cheesy moments weren't overplayed for the most part, but because the actors were so good, they really pulled at the heartstrings. Also, really cool how they show the passing of time making you stronger, faster, but it also the stuff you've passed through can color your memories and how you see your past. Time can wear you down. You can become sharper in your field, but lose the bigger picture. Life takes a toll on everyone.

What if this movie is technically the sequel to 13 Going On 30? Hear me out on this though... in my own head canon, Jennifer Garner's character was the original time traveler, and now her kid is one as well, just in a different way. I think Mark Ruffalo's character was so interested in how time travel could have worked for her before that he began learning the physics needed to develop it years later. Due to the sensitive nature of his work, he and his wife had to move to the middle of nowhere and change their names, so that's why they're not the same as before. So the sequel is essentially 40 going on 13 for Adam.

This was such a good movie and it really did have everything. Walker Scobell was the perfect person to play a young Ryan Reynolds, he nailed his mannerisms to a tee! The scene of them playing catch at the end really got me good. Very touching! I was so upset though that Mark Ruffalo's character wasn't there in the future. I thought for sure that Sorian had him killed in that auto accident, which would've never happened since she was killed.

This reaction came at a perfect time, I literally just finished watching it on Netflix and decided to check youtube. I'd like to recommend Real Steel if you haven't seen it, also by Shawn Levy. It has the same amazing character interaction and a heartfelt story, masked by boxing robots (in the same way this one's masked by time travel).

The word toxic is so over/miss used, it is not toxic for a parent to let the kid know when they are being cruel. How you tell them matters, but this kid clearly responds to blunt honestly. That actor, Walker Scobell, is amazing. He plays a young Ryan Reynolds so well.
