I am very proud to offer this interview to all of you and super proud to bring David Grisman into the Lessons With Marcel family! We went for nearly 2 hours that day and Marcel has artistically edited it down to this brilliant 25 minutes. Perhaps Marcel will release bonus footage of this interview on his extras channel one day. I was truly blown away by some of Dawg's responses -- especially his comments on his version of "Minor Swing" and his thoughts about changing licks to make them easier to play. I always find David's fingerings to make a lot of sense and I was happy to hear him comment on that. Also, Andy Hatfield, Hayes Griffin, and Marcel did a great job overdubbing the harmony parts to "Ricochet!" I am grateful to be a part of the LWM team!

David is a lovely human. In 1996 I had a life threatening car accident. 3 weeks ICU and 3 months on a ward. A friend sent an email to David telling him I was a big fan in a bad way and he sent me a Cd with a beautiful uplifting message. I am so grateful for that connection.

Long time fan of the Dawg. I mean long, long time. I was privileged to attend one of his classes at the Sunset Center in Carmel, Calif. . He divided the group into those who read music and those who were "ear" players and "tab" players. I sat alone , but David made me feel right at home. Great lesson, I learned more in a couple hours than in the previous couple years. Legendary player, superb teacher, generous and caring; a gentleman with heart. Thanks so much for the video, brought back a lot of memories.

This flew by, I would watch the uncut 2 hours for sure!

This was one of my all time favorite David Grisman interviews. Not only is David Grisman one of the coolest people around, mickey is an exceptional interviewer and a joy to watch and listen to. It was so great to learn the origin of the legendary pizza tapes album and minor swing and hear some of the stories from days gone by but it was really nice learning how the Dawg approaches both learning old tunes and coming up with compositions of his own. Lots of great wisdom packed into 25 minutes! Mickey should definitely do more interviews! (Bonus points for the bomb ass video editing and for the LWM version of Ricochet!)

Interesting. I liked the comment that it's really hard to avoid being yourself. It's amazing, though, the people who would try to force you to be otherwise. That's a big part of the reason I fell out of the music business, and why still to this day I'm fighting the same old battles to be able to remain myself. I've been doing this for 40 years. In those days especially it was different for a woman. It still is. Liked Soldier's Joy. Well seasoned, like a fine wine. That kind of sound only comes with time. Amazing all the work David did as time went on, after I fell out of it. Movies? My goodness - Also fascinating to hear about the evolution and crossing of paths between bluegrass and jazz. I was an early observer. I had hitchhiked to the Southeast, wound up in Tennessee from California to learn bluegrass and wound up meeting a jazz guitarist in Knoxville who turned me onto it. This was about the same time David and Tony's Dawg music began picking up. I wound up making a 180 deg. turn and heading back to California to try to learn jazz. Those were the days. Hitchhiking 3000 miles was a drop in the bucket. Now every day when I wake up I'm just grateful to have another day to get up off the couch. Enjoyed listening, nice interview. Thanks for sharing.

I enjoyed this. Will be making use of both your websites. I noticed that David has a recording of Billy Strings and Don Julin from 2013. I was a regular attendee of Folk Alliance in Kansas City and attended the year that Billy and Don did. I ended up sitting through their showcase and got some great photos of the pair. Billy is a very expressive player.

David is s great Guy❤️👍 I Sold David the 1905’ Gibson A-4 that was featured on Tone Poems #1. Sold Dave a few other great instruments. Saw the Dawg Quintet in 1978’ Sacramento State College. Mark OConner’ was the guitarist at that time. Best! Dennis🇺🇸

Marcel, This doesn't relate to this video but I wonder why you do not mention or study Clarence White as you do others like Tony Rice. I watched Tony play live several times and he does have a unique style. Seems as though he goes out of his way to make things difficult at times to show off his abilities, which are amazing. First guy I have ever seen use his little finger to form an A shaped bar cord. Ouch. Not anything i would encourage a beginner to copy. David Grisman sure did respect Clarence. He was a trail blazer for many many flatpickers. More than likely you will not read this but it is the only way for me to reach out. Can't find an e-mail for you and I do not subscribe to any social media nor do I want to. Love your channel.

Most of us are too young to have seen Clarence, and the recorded material is limited, with very little [non-Byrds] video besides Muleskinner [w Grisman]. Sandy Rothman has done his best to provide some audio and he has also written many articles here & there [I love his CD with Steve Pottier= Bluegrass Guitar Duets, even if Sandy has focused on mandolin since]. Russ Barenberg did a labor of love book of tab of Clarence recordings, and also there is a book of tab and stories by Roland & Diane. Trail Blazer indeed!
