OneMic Series - The David Grisman Quintet - Del and Dawg
OneMic - the minimalist recording series by John Cuniberti demonstrates that an entire band can be recorded with only one stereo microphone in one take. Each recording session is shot in HD video on a Sony a7RII by filmmaker Nathaniel Kohfield. What makes this series so different from other live performance videos is that the artist is in complete control of his/her presentation. This means that the sound, balance, dynamics and stereo image is decided upon at the moment of creation, not in post-production. The artist (band) is responsible for the final product. There is no editing of the audio or video. It’s as honest as it can be including imperfections. This organic presentation isn’t limited to “acoustic” music as seen with live classical and folk music. In this series veteran recording engineer John Cuniberti records bands with electric guitars and drums that would normally require a multi-mic, multi-track approach. This is not the first time this has been done but this technique was quickly forsaken soon after the multi-track tape recorder was invented and with it a loss of a level of musical intimacy. The OneMic series demonstrates the positive aspects of the minimalistic recording process of the 1930s but will be captured on modern stereo recording equipment.

Wow...great recording and great playing!
These videos are great. Did you instruct the musicians (if they can) to move closer and further from the mics when they needed to be "spotlighted"? I guess they can play quieter too. It's pretty amazing to do that in tandem when each performer essentially listens from their own spots.
Fantastic performance of David Grisman quitet ❤️👍
Fabulous! I see in most of your other video's how you avoid having musicians (or more accurately their sound ie: their amp if electric) in the two side 90 degree segments. In this video it looks like they are in a more or less complete circle, which has me wondering about how you managed the two out of phase segments?
this is seriously spectacular
WOW WOW WOW...they're ALL on FYYYYre!!!!
Matt Eckel flute
Espetacular!Saudações do Brasil.
Amazing guys. Great tune and what a sound!
This just could not be better!!!
I cannot think of a better recording of flute. Everything else was great too! Spirited and enjoyable!!!
First time I saw a live performance of Dawg Music- was 1977’ Sacramento State auditorium. A young Mark O’Connor on Guitar. I was hooked. David still has the timing and touch👍
Good song! Sounds great. Thanks for sharing.
È la terza volta che guardò questo video bravissimo è tutto live musicisti al massimo i brani di questi video si possono acquistare ?
👏👏👏wonderful
Fantasitc as always. Was this the R88A or R88?
grisman still is killin' it....I wonder if that's "killer" he's playing there. btw love the excellent recording
Amazing recording !¬¬¬¬¬¬ It sure reminds me of the legendary work of my recording Hero & Grammy Award winner Kavi Alexander of Water Lily Acoustics back in the nineties !
I commented on the other Grisman video I think but I keep coming back. As a recording engineer of 30+ years, even with KZread's compromised sound these are some of the nicest, most natural recordings I've heard.
Are any of these recordings available on CD or vinyl?
