On Friday, 11/18/22, we're hosting a free virtual live-streamed event featuring world-renowned mandolinist and ArtistWorks instructor, Mike Marshall, and bluegrass mandolin legend, David Grisman.
Together, these two master musicians will be discussing all things music. They’ll be sharing stories about how they met, chatting about their time playing together in the David Grisman Quintet, answering viewer questions in real-time, and performing a handful of tunes.
Mike and David will also be detailing and providing updates on another major facet of David’s career-the record label that he founded in 1990 and is still managing to this day, “Acoustic Disc.” In addition to frequent releases of his own music via Acoustic Disc, David also produces, supports, promotes, and distributes recordings from some of the biggest names in acoustic music, including Sam Bush, Del McCoury, Bill Monroe, Tony Rice, Doc Watson, and more.

Our teachers also provide notation, tablature, backing tracks, and other amazing supplemental materials to round out their holistic curricula in each course. Students can learn anything from electric and acoustic guitar to banjo, piano, mandolin, fiddle, saxophone, ukulele, how to sing-just about any instrument you can think of. And, our esteemed faculty can teach you how to play everything from bluegrass to jazz to rock to blues to classical and beyond.

The other day I came to a traffic light with Mondo Mando cranking with my windows down and sunroof open! You should have seen the wide eyed expressions I got! 😂

So refreshing listening to you both. Lol - you guys trying to remember those old tunes, so much water under the bridge. You got me reminiscing, too. I remember when David, Tony and I think the original quintet came through Santa Cruz, and also Daryl jamming on Pacific Ave. Those were the days - some good lessons with Mike - Re: listening but not having to be a part of it - when you listen, you are a part of it. Holds true for many things. There certainly was a contrast between being involved in music and being involved in the music business. I didn't find the business side of things to be user-friendly, particularly for an independently minded woman. Maybe this is why Tony grew louder - you had to fit the paradigm, something I couldn't do well. I can relate to what Tony went through b/c I also had to learn to reinvent myself. For me, life took many turns after music. Returned to school, mechanical drafting and finally nursing. That would take a few more pages... But the love of music will never leave me. Wish you both well and smooth sailing. Thanks for the smile.
