The Accidental Invention of the Best Snack Food Ever
In 1853, George Crum was a chef at the Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga Springs, Ny. One day, a customer ordered fried potatoes. Upon being served, the customer scoffed and sent them back several times because of their soggy texture. But Chef Crum lost it. He fired back, cutting the potatoes paper-thin and frying them up. Back then eating with your hands was a major faux pas. But Crum’s plan backfired and the customer loved them. Soon thereafter, thin-sliced fried potato “chips” took the world by storm.

Crum may have Popularized Potato Chips, but he didn’t invent them. Recipes for frying potato slices were published in several cookbooks in the 19th century. In 1832, a recipe for fried potato "shavings" was included in a United States cookbook derived from an earlier English collection. William Kitchiner's The Cook's Oracle (1817) also included techniques for such a dish. Similarly, N. K. M. Lee's cookbook, The Cook's Own Book (1832), has a recipe that is very similar to Kitchiner's. The New York Tribune ran a feature article on "Crum's: The Famous Eating House on Saratoga Lake" in December 1891, but mentioned nothing about potato chips. Neither did Crum's commissioned biography, published in 1893, nor did one 1914 obituary in a local paper.

Also, that someone in Ohio, Mikesell's, announced their closure in Feb. 2023; less than two weeks later, another Ohio-based potato chip company, Conn's, brought a license to Mikesell's assets and brand to protect their legacy. Thought that was a hilarious coincident to point out. S-Source? It was revealed to me in a Dayton Daily News article.
I'll take a Saratoga chip... AND EAT IT! (imagine that one DEATH NOTE scene is required)

I love potato chips. But I also remember liking the dark chocolate chips with hints of artificial strawberry that my aunt brought home from travelling abroad. Those were shaped like potato chips.
Nope. The potato chip recipe can be found in William Kitchener M.D.s (1775-1827) book; "The cooks oracle and housekeeping manual" for "Potatoes fried in slices or shavings" (No. 104.) He was dead a full 30 years before the "accident" took place.

The dominant language at the time American soldiers came to Belgium to eat the fries was french, so Americans named them french fries.

Nah, the Irish invented them- if you look in old Irish cook books pre potato famine, one of the recipes was thin sliced potatos fried in oil. E.g. crisps

Don’t forget that the popsicle was invented by somebody leaving root beer out on a VERY cold night.
you do know that this is simply a legend and Crum didn't really accidentally invent potato chips right?
