The 8th Floor of Marshall Fields (Macy's) - Chicago IL

Filmed June 2017
In May 2017, Macy's announced that they would sell off the upper floors of the old Marshall Feilds state street store in Chicago. Every floor above 8 was already closed off but this sale comes with the loss of the architecturally significant 8th floor of the store.
E+M Express is an old name for the channel. That I only used for a few months and only posted a few videos with. (You're not missing anything)

This store is so iconic. This store basically gave prestige to the Midwest which was often considered the armpit of America by fellow Coastal Americans. This is the only place back in the days where you can buy sterling silver dinnerwares and those expensive European imports like Swiss clocks and English golf clubs. Before my grandma passed she left a bunch of Marshall Fields´ christmas ornaments behind still wrapped in the original plastics bearing the name of the store.

This store is gigantic; I'm not surprised to learn that they figured out alternative uses for the upper floors. Unfortunately I was there on a Sunday so nothing on 7 was operating. :-(

The Marshal Fields brand was worth more than Macy’s at the time of the acquisition.. why would they change them all to Macy’s stores? Why do they feel the need to pointlessly ruin everything nice?

It's a matter of time of Macy's will just up and close the store completely we already lost the wine or losing the chocolate Macy's in the May Company becoming one was the worst thing ever so much of our retail history and so many beautiful stores have been lost

It is only a matter of time before they change the Walnut Room into some Hipster food court where you must place your order on your Smartphone and must pay with Apple or Samsung Pay.... :(

Greg Karris they already have hipster food court on the 7th floor. Macy's won't mess with the walnut room until they are desperate.

I was there in the walnut room just before Covid. Shabby chic does not begin to describe it. Went with a friend for dinner the place was almost empty and every chair that I could see had some sort of tear in the leather or a huge chip in it. The walls needed to be redone. So sad I hadn’t been there in about 20 years. I had moved away and was back for a visit.

Such a beautiful store, went here a few years ago. I love the art deco escalators as it's not like anything we have in the UK. I also like the room the ground floor which had men's underwear inside it was off to one side and looked liked they hadn't have too many alterations to it over the years. The basement was a bit of a confused mess with kitchenware and a mini food court from memory and the only part lacking when I went.

Lost Departments I went to the Macy's in Manhattan a couple of weeks ago which unfortunately has lost a lot of its history but I loved the escalators. I see you have a couple of channels, very interesting stuff. Here in the UK it's rare to see many older dept stores with old elevators and escalators as most have been completely replaced which is disappointing. Keep up the good videos they are great to watch and you are a good narrator.

Another excellent example of a retailer no longer interested in selling merchandise. I guess we have to accept that the shopping experience is a joyless one done in isolation, or is to be done in the factory environment of Walmart. They are really out to kill the Macy's in Herald Square, too.

mannyistheman2221 they ruined a very large Macy’s we had here that was formally a Kaufmann’s with multiple floors just this. Nowhere near as gorgeous of a building by far.. but multiple floors nonetheless. They also ruined the restaurant and the bakery 🧁! Like who doesn’t want to continue an awesome bakery 🥯 that’s already there!!!!

I went to that Macys yesterday and tried in vain to get to where I could look down on the tree in the Walnut room like I remember doing once when I was a kid. This makes so much sense, I was on the 8th floor then and now I can’t reach it. That’s too bad, it looks beautiful especially that large atrium with the escalators!

I like the discounted areas. Found many bargains. There are rumors the 8th FL is haunted by ghosts of a theater fire in 1903. I was there a few years ago and heard strange whistling. Creepy. Only me and a lady were on the floor. The store was a temp morgue back tben.

As a result, we the innocent business owners, workers, and investors have to bear the price of their looting of our businesses.
