The Candy/Frango Department has not been altered as of yet....so it still looks like Marshall Field's. However, they...macy*s, moved all the Fine Tableware, Glassware, Table Linens, Bedding and Bathroom stuff to the Lower Level...from the 6th Floor where Furniture, Mattresses and Rugs now are! I notice they still have a Wine Cellar and Small Food Delicacy section as well. It was nice this store still has a Book Department now run by the Independent "Barbara's Books", which is from Chicago. 👍

I like this Macy's the best because I can get to it on public transportation. Im disabled and I cant drive. My friends drive me to suburban Macy's. I love to eat at the Walnut Room. I bought some Frango mints for Easter. My friends and I love them. I love the big Xmas tree in the Walnut Room at holiday time.

Even though this is operating as macy*s on State Street...this Grand Department Store will always be Marshall Field Field and Company to me. It is literally the last Grand Department Store on Earth. Hopefully macy*s will have the sense to keep it operating. They have downsized it to I believe eight selling floors from ten originally...so in this day and age it is still quite enormous. I believe only macy*s Main Herald Square Store in Manhattan and Harrod's in Knightsbridge...London, England are larger. Galleries Layfayette on Boulevard Hausmann in Paris is also quite large and stunning with its beautiful atrium. Marshall Field's State Street Store has stunning architecture dating back almost 130 years...the South Wabash Section of the building which is 9 floors. This will always be my favourite department store in the entire world as well as one of my favourite buildings.

I lived in Chicago for two years 2001-2003 and this Marshall Field's was the only store I ever shopped at. I was all set to criticize macy*s, but they have done a remarkable job renovating and maintaining this beautiful department store. My cousin lives in Oak Park and she mentioned this store still has eight retail floors. Seven where the grand Walnut Room is is now the top floor and that Furniture you saw is now moved from eight to six I believe. They only removed two retail floors. The Lower Level looks gorgeous as well...and they still carry books. Barbara's Books, I believe. I can't wait to visit when this whole COVID-19 is more under control. I still can't understand why macy*s got rid of the Marshall Field's moniker. ...they were just acting greedy I guess and wanted their name on everything. They should have kept the Kaufmann's and Filene's names as well!!!

Thanks for your nice comment. Really love your videos. You mention the last section of the Marshall Field building was completed in 1907...124 years ago where the Tiffany Mosaic Ceiling and Walnut Room are. May I stand correct. In 1993 I had the pleasure of being taken on a tour of the entire store...which incidentally has 3 Basements....1 only for selling. The oldest section of MF is South Wabash (1892/1893) which has 9 floors and looks different from the rest of the limestone structure. It is nearly 130 years old. Next section is the North/Middle State (State/Randolph) where North 13 Story Lightwell is and Iconic Columns over 111 North State Main entrance these built in 1902. Formentionedis from 1906/1907...as well as Middle Wabash. Final section of MF is North Wabash section (Wabash/Randolph) completed in 1914...107 years ago. So entire structure is well over 100 years old. I believe there is a Historical Plaque on North State section...I think facing Randolph...listing all the dates. I am an architecture buff and this is one of my favourites along with John Wanamaker aka macy*s in Centre City Philadelphia....also designed by Daniel Burnham. 🙂

You also need to add Dayton Hudson. I worked at the their former distribution center on the northwest side of the city.

We use to have many department stores all south on State St. Carson Pierre Scott, Wieboldt , Montgomery Ward , Goldblatt, and Sears. All large and all gone after 1979 to 2000. Sad era when we lose all these varieties and quantities in merchandise for limited crap. Even Woolworths which was there and was for the underclass gave us choices and were everywhere

Still watching your videos. Really miss Marshall Field's at Christmastime. The last part of your video shows the North Wabash section as mentioned before...constructed in 1914! It houses Men's departments and hasn't really altered too much in almost 30 years. The escalators shown are known as the North Wabash ones and were installed in I think in 1934-1936 by The Westinghouse Company...so they are almost 90 years old. They are not OTIS ones. The Dayton's Department store which was a Marshall Field's for five years in Downtown Minneapolis....then macy*s...then closed had similar escalators from the 1940's. That building is now being re-developed into what is known as the Dayton's Project Seasons Greetings. 🎅

I miss this Marshall Field's store on State St. so much. Also the one that used to be in Water Tower Place. Gone, but not forgotten. I always shopped at Field's for special purchases and all my personal grooming products. And who could forget the Frango Mints? They're not the same anymore. And having a special Christmas outing for lunch at the Walnut Room. Their Chicken Pot Pie was to die for. So sad. Macy's really downgraded this beautiful flagship store.

Wow!!!! I love Marshall Fields! It’s a real shame that they closed off the upper floors but I guess the store was just too large. Are there any more Macy’s store tours coming up by the way? I really do enjoy them and the history. Like the St. Louis area or more into Indiana?

Store is still quite large. I think 2nd Largest in the US. Only macy*s Manhattan Herald Square Flagship is larger. I believe it still has 11 selling floors! They, macy*s downsized this store because they said..."It was too big and too unproductive. macy*s has downsized all their other downtown stores....San Francisco, Brooklyn (Abraham & Straus), Boston (JordanMarsh), Philadelphia-Center City (John Wanamaker Building), Washington, D.C. On average I think most of these stores only have 3 retail levels.😥
