she was a genius. she was telling stories and painting pictures of the world she lived in.. anybody what is the wonderful music that goes with this video.. beautiful
The music works very well with these pictures. Makes me sad.....
Back in a time where elegance of the soul and of the body were everywhere

im from chicago, this is a treasure.
One of the best Photographer of the world
She was a genius in photography. The more she was taking shots, the more she was perfectioning her talent, and becoming a real professional. Don’t forget she took 150,000 photos!!! Anybody will become professional after 1,000 photos. So what if it was 150,000 ?! Her compositions, contrasts and art are exceptional. As for 8 mm videos, I guess it was for her own fun.

"Anybody will become professional after 1,000 photos" that is a dumb statement, obviously coming from someone who is not a photographer. Learning how to take photographs doesn't make you a photographer in the same way that learning how to write doesn't make you a writer. It takes a depth. Which is why there are so many colorfull and shallow "pros" today revolving around Instagram and the likes.

Too bad that she is rejected by many of the “Gate Keepers” of the photographic community….I’ll never understand that mindset.
Takes even more self-assurance to film people in the street than sneak a photo of them. She had nerve.
I would have been interesting to see her progress into modern day video cameras. She clearly had a eye for capturing the moment which in this day and age is rare.

really captures that time period. also, eccentric unusual things and people
Great footage of people! When men still wearing hats great look, bought and read their Newspaper. Chicago 1971 Era!!
That's good, she was really trying to do video art before anyone I think was doing video art, she was pushing it, not trying to be a film maker or make a movie, but trying to extend the format of film to art. Very cool, I wonder how she would have edited it?

These city streets with nobody on cell phones.
A garden of peace.
What soundtrack did Ms Maier herself have in mind …
From some artifacts seen at the top left mostly and a little at the bottom left I think this film may have been shot on Regular 8mm. Is that correct?

She had a zoom obviously, hard to tell if it was manual or powered. If it was the latter, she may have had a super 8 by that stage.

All artists are complex, far from what is just apparent and probably real. With Maier we have only just discovered the tip of the iceberg. Patience.

…. is Maier also playing piano
Vivian Maier, never existed, is the creation of Joan Fontcuberta, a great Spanish photographer, teacher and philosopher. It was an experiment for an investigation and his new documentary. The photos were taken by him. He said that one day looking through the boxes full of old photos of him, he came up with that idea. Social photography experiment.
