Here are my thoughts about the worst credit card benefits right now…
1. The Chase Sapphire Preferred 10% Anniversary Bonus is not what you think it is. You get 10% back of your annual spend back in the form of POINTS! Spend $50,000? Get 5,000 points worth $50 cash back or $62.50+ towards travel! That’s only an additional 0.1% return!
2. The Amex Platinum Card SoulCycle At Home Bike Credit can be worth up to $300, but only if you comply with all of the restrictive terms and conditions for this single-merchant-single-product benefit.
3. Neither the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card nor the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card give you an annual free night just for having the card. To get one, you’ll have to pay a $250 annual fee and spend $15,000 on your card. Then, you’ll receive your certificate that’s capped at a redemption value of 50,000 points (combinable with up to 15,000 additional points if you have them). Compare that to the Hilton Honors Surpass Card (and business version), which have a $95 annual fee, the same $15,000 spend requirement, and give you an annual free night certificate with NO CAP!
4. The World of Hyatt Business Credit Card is the ONLY business hotel credit card that DOES NOT come with some form of anniversary free night! The ones from Hilton, Marriott, IHG, and Wyndham all do, however!
5. The Priority Pass Select membership that comes with the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card only gives you 4 free visits for you and up to 4 guests per year for a $400 annual fee. Even the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect card (personal AND business versions) give you 4 Priority Pass visits per year, and those have a $95 annual fee (or $0 in Year 1)!
6. The Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite card gives you a $150 Lifestyle Credit. Really?! A top-tier premium travel credit card with a private jet benefit advertising to high net worth / high income earners tries to market itself with $150 per year in “lifestyle” benefits?
7. The newly revamped Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard gives you up to $120 per year in Lyft credits, but only up to $10 per month, and only if you take 3 rides each month!
8. The Elan Visa Infinite Reserve Rewards+ Card took the ‘coupon book’ model to new heights with up to $20 per month in 4 select categories (but each one is capped at $5 per month)! Learn more at this link: card.myaccount...

    Great points, Mark. In my opinion, Chase needs to remove the online grocery purchase benefit on the CSP and change it to a gas stations/EV charging benefit (keep the same multiplier). I travel a lot and have a 3/4 ton diesel pickup for my company vehicle, I am losing out on a lot of UR points because of it. Waiting until September to drop below 5/24 to grab a CFU for the rotating gas and 1.5% category.

    Mark, another master piece for the everyone in and coming into the credit card game. GREAT GREAT GREAT points. These are reason's you have to consistency re-evaluate why you're getting a certain card, and don't fall in love with the card of the bank. This reminds me of your video of the worst credit cards like the luxury cards. Chase is straight up LYING (not-misleading) about that 10% REBATE, AMEX must think we're all fools for Equinox. I consider Hotel cards with an annual fee and no free nights an insult to my intelligences, I don't get them and never will. I trimmed down my eco-systems no more US-Bank or BoA.

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    A joke indeed! The AA Executive can still be worth it for those who value having an Admirals Club membership; it's still the least expensive option to obtain it. However, the new 'partner-based coupons' are far from exciting. The WOH Business Card seems good for the welcome offer, and potentially for the Hyatt Leverage Membership & 10% Redemption Bonus for those people who can spend $50K per calendar year. However, it's a very niche product not suitable for many.

    I agree if your not Platinum Honors then the Premium card is the better option. The life style credit has a lot of easy to use options like streaming services . Like you stated most premium cards have this. The incidental credit can be used for AA which no other card allows or United Travel bank. It has better protection and priority pass which you can gift to up to 5 family members or friend. plus the 1.2% travel portal redemption. I think this card gets drugged unjustly. It may not be for everybody just like every other premium card. but it is a good card for the right person

    Because it earns 3X on mobile wallet transactions, gives a guaranteed value of 1.5¢ per point, and has a $325 credit that can be used for travel outside of the U.S. Bank portal (and on dining). Translation: high-value + simplicity. You cannot get that value from the C1VX unless you get into the weeds of transfer partners & learn how to maximize points. You also need to use the C1 Travel portal to use the credit. We may maximize in this community, but we're in the vast _minority._

    Hello Mark, first, thanks for the great information you continue to deliver to the community. Great info and great delivery. Thanks again! Just wanted to add more detail on the SoulCycle credit from AMEX Platinum (re. “Dumb benefit #2”). Yes, it is likely there is just a small percentage who would take advantage of it, yet, for those who would consider it, there are really just TWO major players with similar offerings, and the credits AMEX offers were enough to change my decision into getting the SoulCycle instead of the Peloton bike. Details: bike was already discounted from $2500 to $1500, additionally AMEX issued an additional $300 credit for the purchase of the bike, and another $300 credit which covers an entire year of subscription (this, at least for now, should be an ongoing yearly credit, vs the one-time credit for the actual bike). The bottom line is that for anyone who is entertaining such a purchase, the $600 credit certainly makes it easier 😉. Regarding #6 BOA PRE card $150 “lifestyle credit”, yes, it may seem trivial but it is incredibly easy credit to get (e.g., gym subscription) without any work, and many of us appreciate simplicity. I agree that the non-Elite also has the same great multipliers (if a BOA Platinum Honors member), yet my personal view is that I use those points exclusively for travel, which the Elite version adds another 1.25x for a total of 4.375x for travel and dining, and 3.28x for everything else (when booking travel on BOA’s portal), while the non-elite card does not. In my case, the $300 airline incidentals (free to use across multiple airlines, unlike AMEX Plat and others) is also easier to use, so it does have a $100 effective annual fee (if we don't count the Global-Entry/TSA credit every 4 years), which I don't mind given the ease of use, and high multipliers across the board (again, if BOA Platinum Honors, and use points for travel booking via portal) Thanks again! Keep up the awesome work! You always bring great insight and we all learn something new or a different perspective that helps us make better decisions.

    You could add basically all of the "limited-time merchant offers" to this list that many cards offer. I just got one for my citi card, 5% back from exxon or mobile gas. Well the way you get that whopping 5% is stupidly convoluted. First you have to download the app, set up an account, add either google pay or apple pay which you should already have your citi card linked to, then you have to spend at least $30 (but mo more than $100) on Supreme+ gas. And all that for only 5% back for a short period of time. Im already getting 5% back with my other cards! Why would i go through all this trouble?? If i could just swipe my citi card at the terminal and get an extra 5% back on top of the 5% im already getting (with the custom cash card) then that would be cool. But offers like this are so utterly pointless!

    Your point about the BoA PRE card is valid. The credits don’t do a good job of offsetting the AF. The ONLY reason I have the card is the 20% discount on flights. I use it as my airline card to get a decent return on my flight and not be loyal to any airline. I’ve also heard that airline cards are trash. If it wasn’t for that reason I’d switch to the $95 PR card.

Their flexibility is bad too. I don’t want to put spend on a card that won’t earn me a great return and keep me limited to one airline. With the BOA card I can redeem for a little bit more than 1 CPP and get boost with the Preferred Rewards. Plus flexibility with the airline and get premium seats. It’s pricey but it’s the most consistent airline card on the market.

    Mark. Is it better to have just one set up like either chase trifecta or amex or capital one or multiple set ups to maximize all the categories and have points from different carriers for flexibility in transferring partners?

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    Жыл бұрын

    Depends on individual goals, and likely how much you spend per year. If you use multiple setups with overlapping transfer partners - or some easy way to use different points for the same trip - that can make a ton of sense. But if you're not doing that, and don't have moderate to high spend, then it's probably going to be better to avoid getting a bunch of different setups if they don't work together in they way you need them to. It'd be lame to have like 10K points in 1 program, 23K in another, and 19K in a third at the end of a year and you cannot use them to book the flight or hotel you want.

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    Жыл бұрын

    Having said that, getting large welcome offers in different programs (that have use for you) can also make sense. I like to have big balances in different programs that I like to use so that when I plan a trip, I have a lot of options.

    Totally up to you. I've reinstated cards before because I found a new use for them. Not sure what you mean by "upgrade version." Thought of those 2 new borderline useless Marriott cards as soon as I saw this video title. On top of everything you said about them, both Chase and Amex have cards with a $95 annual fee that give you a 35k cert every year with no spend required (though you need to do product change to get the Amex one). Yes it's less valuable, but I feel like I'd much rather get that cert every year for $95 then put that $15k in spend on another card with much better multipliers than the Marriott cards. While on the topic, I think it's annoying that basically all the personal Marriott cards have the same Marriott multipliers. Come on Marriott/Amex, for $650 per year you can't at least give me 8x on Marriott properties on the Brilliant?

    You seem to be under the mistaken impression that these credit card companies are trying to get their customers to live a certain way. In fact, the credit card companies would prefer that their customers don't live that way. It's much more profitable. It is not the credit card companies intention to make their credit cards profitable to their customers.

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    Жыл бұрын

    Agreed that the credit card companies are focused on profitability 👍 Also agreed that they're probably trying to tap into existing customer spend patterns & have those people use their cards instead of a competitor. I suppose I was trying to say that a lot of the new partner-driven credits / benefits that we're seeing are frustrating (at least to me). As an example, the revamped Citi AA Executive card now features benefits with Grubhub, Lyft, and Budget/Avis. I'd personally want an AA card for the AA lounge access and AA-specific benefits, not to engage with other companies that I don't use. But clearly Citi / AA must know what % of their customers DO use those partners and WOULD likely use their AA card more often with those benefits added. For me, however, I see these 'coupon' benefits as a list of "have to do's" rather than "want to do's." More work keeping track of things, esp. since there are now multiple cards with overlapping benefits.
