00:00 Introduction
00:42 Problem #1 - Chase Has Very Few Unique Transfer Partners. Of the 14 total Chase Transfer Partners, only 4 of them are unique when compared against Amex Transfer Partners, Citi Transfer Partners, and Capital One Transfer Partners. However, that drops down to only ONE UNIQUE PARTNER if you also add in Bilt Transfer Partners.
5:07 Problem #2 - One of Chase’s Best Transfer Partners (Hyatt) Is a Very Small Program. Hyatt hotels are fantastic, but they’ve got a very small footprint worldwide. Currently, there are around 1,600 hotels in the World of Hyatt program, yet the likes of IHG One Rewards and Hilton Honors have around 7,000 properties participating in their programs (and Marriott Bonvoy has over 8,000)!
6:30 - Problem #3 - Chase Offers Zero Personal Core Cards With a Dedicated Gas Category. Crazy! Neither the Chase Sapphire Reserve nor the Chase Sapphire Preferred have a rewards category for gas stations. The same holds true for the Chase Freedom Unlimited and the Chase Freedom Flex (although the Flex typically earns 5% at gas stations for one quarter of the year).
9:02 Problem #4 - Chase Offers Zero Core Cards With a Dedicated, Traditional Grocery Category. Crazy again! There are a bunch of co-branded credit cards issued by Chase that offer a grocery rewards category year round. Yet, the Chase Sapphire Preferred offers 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points ONLY on ONLINE grocery purchases, and again, the Chase Freedom Flex typically has groceries as part of its quarterly categories for 3 months.
11:57 Problem #5 - Chase Has a Lot of Rules. We all know the Chase 5/24 Rule, but there are a handful of other Chase rules to be aware of that make applying for Chase credit cards a bit difficult. Watch the video below to learn more about them:

    The lack of the grocery and gas categories on Chase's cards is really tough. I know it's possible to get those categories covered with the 5x promos on the Freedom card SUBs from time to time, but a permanent in-store grocery or gas category getting added to even just the Sapphire cards would be hue. Great video Mark!

    @@curmudgeonextraordinaire1884 I completely agree. I know you can take advantage of the online grocery category with certain local grocery stores (even in-store), but that's still annoying to have to deal with when they could just make it an all-encompassing grocery category.

    Well said, Mark! The fact that Chase still doesn’t have a “core” card that earns at least 3X on groceries and gas permanently is baffling to me. I have the CSP, and the online grocery category is worthless for me and is a bummer that Chase just doesn’t change it to in-person groceries. Also, one other flaw I see is in the dining category for the CSR… 3X for a $550 annual fee?!?! I know it comes with the credits to offset it, but it should be 4X at LEAST! That’s my $0.02!

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    Жыл бұрын

    I hear ya on that 3X 😁👍 Perhaps it's because Chase allows travel redemptions at a minimum value of 1.5¢ each via the CSR, so 3X = 4.5% return.

    I disagree on Southwest. It's not difficult to get outsized value with Southwest. The Companion Pass couldn't be easier to get and when you do, you immediately get 3 cents per point.

  • @MarkReese

    @MarkReese

    Жыл бұрын

    Fair point 👍 Still note that 3¢ =(2 x 1.5¢). The video was focused on the value of the rewards currency itself (i.e. Rapid Rewards) and not the overall value that can be extracted from the broader rewards program. A similar argument could be made for nearly all major hotel currencies, airline programs, etc. Example: Marriott points = 0.7¢ (avg.) ... but my Gold Status got me an upgrade ... so I actually got 1.1¢ per point. Again, "fair enough." However, the points themselves were still redeemed at the lower value; you just layered on an addition 'non-points-based benefit' and increased the total value of the stay. That's how I view it.

    Great video Mark! Yes, the Hyatt program is definitely limited. IHG and Marriott both have bigger footprints than Hyatt. Chase definitely could improve their cards in the gas and grocery categories. I really wish that the Chase Freedom Flex and the Chase Freedom Unlimited had different 3% back categories. Chase could probably add 3% back on gas and groceries to one of the cards and remove the 3% back on dining and drug stores from that card. I also find it a little weird that both Freedom cards and the Sapphire Preferred all have 3x back on dining. The biggest problem with Chase in my opinion however, is the 5/24 rule. I think they should adopt a better application rule more like Bank of America’s 3/12 or 7/12 rule. I have 3 Chase cards now and I’m over 5/24. I don’t like having to have to wait for potentially years before I can apply for another Chase card. However, I am not going to put applications to other card issuers on hold just so I can get more Chase cards.

  • @MarkReese

    I love that we credit card content creators are covering these drawbacks about Chase. Not necessarily. If CSR wants to focus on city dwellers like Manhattanites and residents of similar downtown cores - this product does what it needs to do. These people virtually do not spend on gas, but do spend on travel, transit, dining out and delivery. And CSR earns 3x in those categories - not bad at all. Plus memberships and credits relevant to them.

    This is why, as with so many financial matters, diversity is key. This quarter, I have been using either my Discover It Card or my Chase Freedom Flex for groceries. For the rest of the year, I will most likely be using my AmEx Blue Cash Everyday. Groceries are my largest category of spending, and I have to believe there are other people out there with similar spending habits. Chase would certainly lock up a lot of transactions if they had a dedicated 3% grocery category on one of their core cards. Awesome video. Hopefully Chase will take some of this constructive criticism into consideration.

    Hey Mark, I left a comment on this video previously today about 6 hours ago but I don't think it posted for some reason. Basically I was writing to say that the CFU will work for me in the non bonus category spend even though most of my spend is in grocery, gas and restaurants unless it's covered in the 5% rotating then I'll use CFF . I'm cool with that rather than having an Amex Gold or Citi Premier just to earn that 3x or 4x vs 1.5x. I'd rather stick with what Chase has to offer and I'm loyal to them. I'm also glad that the Discover card will be having 5x on Restaurants for the Q2 rather than overlapping w/ groceries or any category like they have done in previous years with the CFF and this year of course. So the Discover card will be getting my restaurant purchases rather than the Chase Trifecta. Great video btw!

    Since I travel between US and Canada a lot, I find Chase's United partner the most valuable. Me and my family often fly between the coasts in US and Canada - New York to Vancouver. I find that UA miles are often better to book Air Canada business class transcons than Air Canada miles, and I keep Chase Sapphire Reserve for that alone. Plus, me and my Canadian family have supplementary cards for lounge access and travel insurance. Plus - an important point that this video misses - Chase Travel multipliers and Lyft. CSR gets you 10x points per $ on Lyft and Chase Travel Hotels, which can truly boost your point earns. Then, there are DoorDash and Instacart memberships and credits. These things make CSR for me a keeper card.

  • @SolidLiquidFox

    Chase likes to keep the Preferred as an entry-level travel card. That means they would need to introduce a dedicated gas and supermarket card. Possibly at $200 and with max 4X capped multipliers on those categories. No travel protections and, much like FU and Flex, possible foreign transaction fees. The card will, of course, have some Doordash, Lyft, Instacart, etc. rebate. This sounds like Chase's style. None of their other cards would be enhanced because they are entry-level for different target customers.

They have lots of overlap with Chase and additionally Turkish, Asia miles, Qantas, Tap. (Turkish is a GREAT one imho) but chase points are also pretty easy to get. And, though Hyatt has a tiny footprint, it's a great chain to get value from your Chase points. I love using chase to top off, Aeroplan, Avios or Flying Blue points. But its always smart to remember if you brant the most value... you have to branch out!

    People likely don't appreciate C1's transfer partners due to a lack of understanding, which is totally understandable. Using international airline programs to fly domestically & using miles on 1 airline to fly on a completely different (alliance) carrier is far from straightforward (and isn't marketed or communicated well by the airlines).

    I don't see why gas has to be a problem. You can always get a separate "sock drawer" card for gas and use it with gas station apps (Shell, Exxon). I use Amex Business Gold for that - just put the card info into the app and use the app to unlock the pump. That will yield you 4x Amex points per USD. Since Amex Business Gold allows 2 categories - the second one is electronics (Apple, Newegg, Dell) for me.
