I think the GT faces were originally just the points where the texture mirrors, then when the devs saw people talking about them online, they decided to run with it in the following installments.

Not to mention we're wired to see faces in images even when they're not really there. I've been seeing "faces" in games for years, especially on the PS1 and N64 lol

fun fact! it wasn't actually intentional, it was a goof up and the person who did it felt embarrassed by it, oddheader covered it in one of his videos

I don't think creepy faces is a Easter egg. That's a old technique to create seamless textures without seamless textures. They would just flip flop the image and this would create effects where our mind would perceive faces because we pick up on the pattern subconsciously. You can find this in a lot of PS1-PS2 games

A racing game that had some weird Easter eggs hidden throughout it was Kirby Air Ride. Most of them weren't super well-hidden or unusual, but the fact that there were so many small ones kept the community guessing for years. Two tiny flowers hidden in strange locations of the City Trial mode stand out as the most obvious. No one knows why they're hidden, but for years people assumed there had to be some kind of secret besides just... hidden flowers.

While Crash Tag Team Racing has an on-foot platforming focused hub world, I guess you can still count it as a racing game. One of the characters Von Clutch, a German cyborg has a line of dialogue where he hints that he may have been a Nazi; "Oh Crash, have I told you about my service in the war?" "Nein? Good." I'm not joking, I was screwing around on the PSP port when I interacted with the guy and that line came out. It's very subtle and that's probably why it flew over peoples heads

My all-time favourite is probably the "Boxchatter" code in Formula 1 97 CE from Bizarre Creations and Psygnosis on the Playstation where the announcers become low-polygon puppets but there were a few other neat Easter Egg modes like one that replaces all textures with just flat-shaded polygons, making the game look like Virtua Racing, one that adds a sepia filter and film wear effects to make it look like it's a film from the 1930s, and even a couple of hidden tracks. In Super Monaco GP on the Sega Genesis, I remember that you could hit the flag man after completing a lap and send him flying. In the Need for Speed II demo on one of the early Playstation demo discs, you could put in a code to race on the moon. I'm not sure if that track was in the final game as I don't have it.

The billboard one is definitely more well known when compared to the others.

In Aero Gauge, a FZero knock off for the N64, the final unlockable was a hovercar that is a 3D rendition of the N64 controller and flies almost twice as fast as any other car in the game.

We as gamers in this modern age really dont appreciate these old and goofy easter eggs anymore.

Agreed, mostly because devs aren't that wacky anymore on their secret stuff and the fact that such games are not available for modern consoles and PCs.

I still appreciate these but easter eggs just aren't the same in the modern age. especially with the devs having to spend more time on gameplay and graphics giving them less free time to add things like this, and when they do it just isn't as interesting.

How far back is considered "modern age"? Because Insomniac's Spider-Man on the PS4 and the remaster on PS5 have that easter egg about the likely purposefully low poly people on the boats, in the remastered version they added a sign with "Missed me?" or something

Literally last night I was looking at oddheader and James thinking I need my Easter egg fix and low and behold! James comes to save the day!

I think that 'somebody who was standing there giving us the middle finger' is a hitchhiker from the original Friday the 13th series of movies who gets shivved after giving them the middle finger for driving by.

The sign in California speed is not an easter egg, it's an untinded left-over beta texture. When porting the game from arcade to N64, Midway assigned a small team of new developers fresh out of school to handle the port. During the process, the team needed to replace several billboards that didn't need to be in the console version, but they hadn't yet received the replacement textures. One memeber of the team created some placeholders that were so ridiculous, nobody would ever forget to replace them before release... That sign is one of those textures.

You should take a look at Beetle Adventure racing for the N64, a strange yet somewhat timeless classic, it had a good few shortcuts that you may perhaps consider easter eggs, they include secret UFO areas and dinosaurs in just some of the ones available, also it happens to be one of the better N64 era racing games that still holds up to this day.

You can see toad cheer you on too in the crowd :p

Redline Racer is a 90's motorcycle game is used to play as a kid. Idk if you've covered it yet but the game had a Star wars hover bike and a dog you could ride.

You missed the stunt track in San Francisco Rush 2, and the one in Rush 2049. The one in Rush 2049 is very well hidden - it's in a turnoff, from a secret tunnel. But it contains all sorts of ramps and jumps to play around with.

Like another user pointed out, it seems like the GT2 Pikes Peak layout but mirrored.

In the playstation 2 Racing and customization game called LA. RUSH there are many cheat codes that give you all cars and customized cars.. plus in one all the traffic cars go berserk crashing everywhere

Lol FH5 is chocked full of easter eggs. A few for Forza Horizon 1, one of Need for Speed Most Wanted, a few for Fast and Furious, one for Super Mario, a few for Initial D, you get the idea.

the faces on trial mountain were just an effect of them looping the rock texture smoothly, it's mirrored to not have any jagged edges. but yeah, i bet that the hd games started looking more specific just to play around with all the rumors.
