    Thanks for the review, I enjoyed watching it. I opted for the B550 Tomahawk for my 5800X CPU build as it is an ATX and has a few more slots to play with. All my previous MBs have been ASUS (to include a B550 TUF for a 5900X CPU build a few months ago), but your review of the MSI Mortar swayed me to try an MSI MB for a change. We'll see how that works out!

    OMG the comment about Asrock codes is spot on. I look at them and say WTF????????????? What is this description saying??? They need an English speaker who knows what the board is doing to redo these descriptions. There's plenty of codes so it COULD be helpful. I had to use them in doing an X470 build and I had to go watch videos from people who have done builds with the boards and gave insight to the basic failures, like memory issues which is the common failures when getting a system running with the better timings.

    Hmm, yeah, could be interesting, but quite hard to control! I don't have access to climate controlled rooms, and you'd need a very closely controlled environemnt to get meaningful numbers. I think case and fan arrangement will have more impact than GPU position, since you want your GPU in the top (fastest) PCIe slot in 99% of situations.

    The last comment made about overbuilding VRMs and saying you don't need it. Correct you don't need it until you want to OC a 5950X. Then you do. The other thing is they run cooler. If you're near the limit of your power handling capability your components are running hot, so having an over-engineered VRM means a cooler VRM, and IMO it's hard for me to say that's over-engineered considering that heat is also right by the CPU and needs to get dissipated. For some VRMs you almost need a fan that blows down on them to remove the heat, so having VRMs that don't get hot is better IMO.

    I know b550 are old news, but I bought the b550m pro vdh, and wasn't sure if I needed a bios update to run the 5000 series, so I bought on aliexpress a ryzen 5 3600 for 70$ instead and will update down the line for a r7 5800x3D or 5700x3D when they'll be cheaper. Ill already have the bios updated, since the r5 3600 is still fairly powerful. I can't wait to build it.

    Please be aware that almost all B550 motherboards that have type-C front panel headers are NOT Gen2 (10Gbps) but are in fact Gen1 (5Gbps), whereas the front type-C ports on cases are almost always Gen2; for example the Corsair 4000D, even though that is a relatively cheap case. I think in this video you mentioned a Gen2 header on the MSI boards but those are definitely Gen1.

    Nice review but i dont think that the "have just 2 m2 slot" is a negative on the ROG motherboard. The other mATX motherboard have the 2nd M2 slot under the primary graphic card and I dont think have a so big thermosyphon on a so delicate device is a good thing. I would say that mATX motherboards should have as a negative that the second M2 slot is under the motherboard, and as a positive of the other two that the slot is free from impediments of any kind (they can have heat sinks even 10 cm high) and they do not suffer from an oven.

    Hi, its stated that the CPU upIink for any B550 is pcie 3 where as the X570 is pcie 4. I have : Ryzen 9 5900x + RX 6800XT and scoring other parts. Should I go for B550? (This CPU uplink of pcie 3 on B550 has put me in doubts to opt for it) Will be using only 1 GPU + 1 nvme M2 SSD for pcie 4. Kindly recommend what will be the effect of cpu uplink of pcie 3 over pcie4 (on X570) Thanks

    The B550 Tomahawk never really inspired. It's fine, but seemed expensive for the specification, and only has 5 USB A ports on the rear IO. The ROG B550-F is likely more expensive and has a few more USB-A but still only 2 m.2 slots.

  • @johndoh5182

    For gaming, not a fan of B550 with 3 NVMe drives. The sacrifice is other components and to make that sacrifice you only get gen3. Two years ago people would have said it's a great deal, but with gen5 drives about to come out that are going to run speeds that you need gen 4 for, AND DirectStorage is becoming a thing and is going to start showing up in games even THIS year, gen3 is too much of a sacrifice. I know Microsoft has downgraded it's min. spec for DirectStorage but still, the faster the drives the better it will perform to a degree. It still depends on how much data the game needs to stream but this is going to increase. So, gen 3 NVMe is not good, and on top of that many cheap board only have 2 PCIe lanes for those NVMe off the chipset, so now it's TERRIBLE for the drives about to come out. These drives are going to be pushing the limit of gen4 X4, and the option you have for plugging them in to the NVMe ports off the chipset is gen3 X2??? Ugghhhh. The only comment made in this video I don't agree with is the $200 mark for upper acceptable limit for B550. Once again, Ugghhh. There are too many sacrifices. A pig will never be a Black Angus Cow. Just for the fact that you have at least 2 PCIe gen4 X4 NVMe ports is well worth making the jump up to a low $200 X570 MB. And I'm really talking about gaming here. So a B550 over $170 is just too much even WITH Wi-fi. The MSI X570 Tomahawk is $220 and the X570S is $230, which I just got. It has a great layout for those who don't want a 2nd GPU. It only has one slot for the CPU lanes and then a full X16 length slot that's PCIe gen4 X4 and that works great for many add on cards. I would have got the MSI Tomahawk into this roundup even though MSI would have been heavily represented. Great layout for the board, nice features on the back with both Type A and C USB3.2gen2 ports. But B550 is dead if you need even TWO NVMe drives and games are growing in package size and 2TB NVMe are insane in pricing, so these low cost options are very limiting. I guess you could keep older games on SATA SSDs and that would help. I tell ya though for people who don't want 2 GPUs but need another PCIe slot, the MSI X570S Tomahawk is pretty darn good, and for those wanting 3 NVMe drives the MSI MPG X570S Edge MAX WiFi is another great board and both in the low $200s USD now, at least in the US. That puts them more expensive than these boards, but not by much and for what you gain, it's worth the cost.

  • @mikepaul3200
    @mikepaul3200 Жыл бұрын

    But if I want pcie 4.0 for the graphics card and all m.2 slots. Id have to jump up to a 570 im assuming. Most of these boards borrow some of the pcie lanes from the graphics card to run the m.2. So you really arnt getting true pcie 4.0. Wouldnt matter to most people. But if im paying for it. I want it.
