There actually is a 5-second-rule that is related to this (somewhat). If you're trying to wake up early but you've developed a habit of sleeping in because beds are just too damn comfy, count down from 5 and jump out of bed. You'd have to do a bit research into the nuerochemistry of why this works but it works EVERY TIME! Just an idea if you actually do want to make a series of this XD

A really important extra note - Use the 5-minute rule not to trick yourself into doing more work, otherwise you will just see it as the big scary task. Genuinely let yourself leave the task after 5 minutes if you want to, otherwise, you won't use the technique and make doing that task a long term habit.

This is the most important part! Committing to 5 minutes but with guilt-free abandonment fully on the cards. This worked when I was trying to get myself to exercise. Getting my shoes on and out the door was the hardest part, so once I'd started it didn't seem to be too bad to continue. But if I turned back early I called it a win.

@@WarfareJournal exactly. It's only 5 minutes unless we FEEL like continuing. The wonderful part is that we usually do feel like continuing after starting, but that seems too good to the brain BEFORE starting. Starting is where the transformation happens and until then, we need to meet our brain where it's at.

Short summary of the video that you can paste in your notes. The 5 minute rule: If you want to stop procrastinating and actually get started on a big project/anything else that you are intimidated to do, set a 5 minute timer and work on that project. Once the time is up you can do whatever you want tho chances are high that you will want to finish the whole project because you already surpassed your comfort zone, which is the hardest part.

This literally happened with me today...I had to write an article and I told myself I'll just research a little about it today and write it tomorrow, but I actually ended up writing the whole thing today itself. I was like "Huh. Well that was easy." Procrastination happens when we think about a task too much and attach ourselves to the emotions associated with it. It's funny how the antidote to procrastination is actually that simple.

  • @RealJamieBarclay

Here are the 2 reasons you've found yourself procrastinating your whole life. 1) You're not doing something you naturally enjoy and you naturally find yourself working at. If you have to force it, you'll eventually procrastinate no matter how disciplined. 2) You have subconscious fears of failure/judgement. You won't work on that essay or on your work if you're associating your value with the quality of the end result. Therefore, procrastinating will give you a scapegoat.

I think a big problem with “procrastination” or “not having the energy” to do something is that our worlds have become incredibly comfortable (evolutionarily speaking). There must be a bigger consequence to NOT acting than there is the reward of acting. Yet, we are often confused on our risk/benefit analysis. So we THINK sitting on the couch is more rewarding than going to the gym. Either way, the threat of something greater or more beneficial isn’t there when our lives are super comfy. 100 years ago if you didn’t get off your ass and tend your farm, you died. Pretty big motivator. Now if you don’t get off your ass and cook a meal, there’s always uber eats.

HA I didn't even know this concept had a name to it. I usually just refer to it as "make it easier on yourself" ie, Telling myself "You don't want to workout? Fine! Go do 2 sets of bicep curls and thats it." It usually turns into a pretty decent workout. Although I completely forgot about it! This video was just a reminder that I need to keep doing more of that haha.

Another great 5-minutes rule to be productive - do all the things that take less than 5 minutes in the moment, instead of planning them for the future. Just do them. All you need is to ask yourself: “Can I finish it in five minutes?” If the answer is yes - just do it! It will significantly reduce pressure on your brain!

I feel like that if the point of the 5 minute rule is to "trick your brain" into doing hard work, your brain is going to associate the rule with doing hard work and naturally feel resistance to it. I feel like a better idea is to define a specific small task to complete that will actually advance you forward. If you still feel resistance to completing the task, you can make it simpler. The idea is that as long as you complete the task, you have made progress. I find that just working on something for 5 minutes often results in no actual progress being made, and my brain isn't usually tricked into working longer if I even manage to start the 5 minutes. An actual defined task has much more motivation associated with it. Though of course if the 5 minute rule works for you that's fine too 😅

"The giant huntsman spider (Heteropoda maxima) is a species of the huntsman spider family Sparassidae found in Laos. It is considered the world's largest spider by leg span, which can reach up to 30 cm (1 ft)." Luckily the Australian ones seem to be more in the realm of a leg span of 15 cm. But there is this too: "Huntsman spiders of many species sometimes enter houses. They are also notorious for entering cars, and being found hiding behind sun visors or running across the dashboard." AHHHHHHH! I wonder how many car accidents are caused by surprise giant spiders...

In fact, if you think about it, our brain is our everything. The information we receive while watching this video is stored in our brains. So, logically, I can say that I will give 5 minutes to myself or my work, but my brain already knows that it will not be 5 minutes. This can create a feeling of procrastination again (I don't have a problem with procrastination, I can do something directly, but I'm just theorizing lol) In short, we don't need to create such "5 minutes" rules for ourselves because it's probably a short-term thing (which might actually work for some people). The important thing is to think well and understand what we want in life. To understand what we need to do for what we want and what it entails. In this way, even when you are not motivated, you will be able to continue because you know your wishes. By the way, great video Matt!
