I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

I really wanted to get into jerkbait fishing this year but- we had record rainfall, the water would never clear enough to throw them. At least not at the places I was fishing. I recently found a clear water reservoir about 50 miles away I can fish- should be able to throw them there. I have a box full of jerk baits and even bought a dedicated rod- and then all the sudden it started raining and literally never stopped for more than 2 days for over 6 months. It really changed things- I fish a river that's basically remade every time it floods- holes are filled with sand and new ones are blown out and trees get washed in- sand bars that were hundreds of feet long are just gone. It's nuts but, you just have to relearn it and keep going. It will stay that way until the next wet season and then you'll have to learn it all over again.

  • @MattStefanFishing

If i know the fish are eating really small forage I will use a feathered treble hook since it mimics tiny baitfish. But overall im not a huge fan of feathered trebles on my jerkbaits because it creates drag in the water and prevents the jerkbait from darting as far side to side IMO

  • @wesvyverberg9517

Love the channel Matt. You are doing a great job breaking down the decision making process of what to throw when but most importantly it’s the why that is so incredibly helpful. I ended up putting feather trebles on my jerks but now I will keep a handful of baits with and some without. What’s your take on size of jerkbait or any other situations where adding feather treble might make sense? I recall you were proponent of it on topwater. Keep up the good work!

@@wesvyverberg9517 Hey Wes, I'm not Matt, but one other situation that feathers works well for me besides matching small hatch is walleye fishing. I've found when it's really cold, for some reason the walleye key in better on my JB with a feather treble. I started by using a mini gulp worm on one treble and that worked, then I got to thinking I might simplify it with a feather treble...it worked. I also sprits a little scent on that feather...maybe just for my confidence, but in my head it seems to work better. 😊

You can smash on a JB in the summer, when it gets hot and you get suspending fish, pick one that stays just barely above the grass cover in your lake. Vegetation is the big limiting factor when fishing jb in the summer. I live on a BBH fishery, so JB in the summer works great, especially at humps and Ridgeline where the BBH congregate to find cooler water, and the bass follow. Good fishin to ya!

I fish a largemouth lake and my best lure is a fluke but the bigger bass don’t react to it as good as they used to. I’m wanting to try a hard jerkbait because I think the realism might get bigger bass. The best colors of fluke are pearl white, glimmer blue and silver rainbow in that order. Can you recommend a couple of hard jerkbait colors to replace the flukes?

I won't pretend to be an expert on any subject, but it seems clear to me that the pretty colors and patterns on lures are there mostly to attract fishermen. Fish are attracted by sound, smell, and motion more than anything. I paint lures with an airbrush for fun and can say with authority that flashy colors and pretty patterns on baits is to fishermen like sparkles from diamonds and jewels to women. I don't think the fish really care that much.
