The 3 Responses Of Leave Voters To Brexit Failure

It’s a brave KZread presenter who mentions the phrase cognitive dissonance at the beginning of a video. But try as I might, there’s no better description of the plight of the poor Brexit supporter faced with overwhelming evidence that Brexit has been a FAILURE, yet remaining an ardent cult member. In this video, I'll explain why I feel a bit sorry for these people.
Brexit has indeed been a failure. That’s not an opinion any more, it’s just counting. The damage done to the British economy, to Britain’s trade intensity, Britain’s observable loss of importance on the international stage, the brain drain of our top technicians, doctors and scientists, it’s impact on small businesses that used to export to Europe, such as mine, that have now ceased trading. The failure of Brexit is stark and in your face. So the Brexit voter is suffering cognitive dissonance.
We appreciate all of you who share our videos with friends and social media to get the word out there. Together, let's bring this extreme right wing government to an end.

🤔 Rob, your analysis of why brexiteers act as they do using cognitive dissonance as the focus is apt and on point. Meaning that any attempt to argue with them from our side is nigh on failure. For our mental health, all we can do is keep the issue of Brexit in the public eye, while advocating the economic / social necessity of reapplying to join the European Union 🇪🇺. I cannot wish for a happy new year, while appalling events in the eastern Mediterranean are continuing without any sight of a ceasefire 🇵🇸😢💐🕊.

Those wishing to reverse brexit would put us under the power of monsters like orban? I think not. I'm guessing putin now wishes that he'd not interfered after all. That is, knkwing that we were a party to the budapest memorandum meant that he thought he had to cut us off or the eu would follow our lead. 'Unfortunately for russians' most of eastern europe hate the idea of reunifying with russia by any means with a passion but whereas nations like hungary can stop the eu acting as a body, they cannot stop britain encouraging the other individual countries to do their bit.

Also the EU Commission has divided Europe completely over immigration. I am glad we are still a country of principle, being the first to give Ukraine long range missiles while France continued selling weapons to Russia without apology & Germany tried to use the mea culpa card fot WW2 although the situation is reversed. Sorry, people who now say they are regretting having voted to leave are not regretting the act per se, of wanting some kind of isolationist bliss based on some kind of unjustified sense of superiority over the rest of the EU members. No, they are regretting it because they see there is no superiority over nothing, in fact, the EU sustained most of those illusions by allowing the UK service economy to exist, as it had advantages to the EU and kept the peace that is the core of the EU, peaceful coexistence of European states. People are regretting yes, not having a situation they had before, with seamless travel and business, and knowing other European States heard what the UK said. And that is over and wont return again, not saying it is impossible for the UK to join, not rejoin, the EU under the rules of the leave agreement and the pre conditions for candidature, so no favors, just the same conditions as any other European country, but it is getting harder by the minute, and the visible differences between the EU and third countries like the UK are obvious now, from Law to the Economy, so, good luck with turning that around. But a like, as always Rob, you deserve it for your coherent speech and fact checking work.

The deeper problem with people having trouble to change their mind when it becomes evident that they had been wrong is that we all have a strong tendency to make an opinion on _everything_. And the less we know about a subject, the stronger opinion we often make---a manifestation of the Dunning-Kruger effect (we don't know how much more there is yet to know about the problem, therefore we deem it simple, therefore we confidently make a strong opinion). And changing a strong opinion is indeed difficult. The lesson learned (hopefully) is: you don't _have to_ make an opinion on everything; especially if you don't understand the matter. So don't, it's perfectly OK to say "I don't know what to think about this". Swallow your pride and trust the experts (unless you want to become one yourself). Again, something that many people find themselves unable to do---to their own cost. Brexit is a perfect example of all this.

OK but as a voter you are required to weigh up the arguments and that is something people are often ill equipped to do.The default position was to abstain as many younger voters did.The moral is that politicians shouldn't dodge the hard issues to court popularity by calling referenda.Swiss nationals are for example often asked to vote more than once on the same issue just to find a workable solution eg denying EU immigration then voting to accept it once the trade implications became clear. Britain's electorate became a pawn in an internal Tory party row about identity and sovereignty and we can only hope that we do get the chance to reevaluate this decision.Being poorer and unable to travel freely in Europe has had a wonderful effect on the collective mindset of the leavers indeed!

@@anthonyrybicki1000 (Sorry for late reaction.) The example of Switzerland is both good but also problematic. I’ve once listened to a Czech emigrant to Switzerland, who described how the Swiss referenda work-and he concluded that it’s something for which one needs to be prepared, indeed trained, to use. He said he didn’t think it’d work at all if simply adopted in Czechia (or another country which is not used to referenda, I include the UK in it as well). The Swiss seem to approach it very responsively, in the manner I tried to convey in the comment: if tou don’t have a well-made opinion, you simply don’t vote. Hence, many of the referenda don’t reach the required quorum and end up inconclusive. This is then a signal to the politicians (and other public figures) to make more effort to explain the matter, as you say…

Certainly it was Welsh "vassals" who were responsible for the Brexit vote in Wales; and by vassals I mean indigenous, anglophile Welsh who don't identify as strongly Welsh. It was mostly these WINOs (Welsh In Name Only) who provided the bulk of the Brexit vote in Wales, as they constitute the majority of the population. Interestingly, 84% of Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers who identify strongly as Welsh voted for Remain, making them possibly the "most pro-EU demographic in the UK", according to research at Cardiff University in 2021. Sadly, this group only accounts for some 22% of voters - they outnumbered the 15% of voters who were born in England, but both groups were dwarfed by the 60+ percent of indigenous WINOs who mostly voted Leave.

This also includes not only people from Africa,Asia and Europe especially Poland,Albania,Romania,Germany and France it includes such"foreigners"as the Scots,Welsh and Northern Irish or people who have joined those nations. Someone in the comments asked why should the UK seek to rejoin the EU. The only way for the UK to reverse its decline is to move closer to the EU again because the EU is its main trading partner. And the UK should contribute to every single one of the EU's aims. These include: Having a large healthy single market which yields economies of scale in manufacturing and distribution, and encourages inward investment, keeping Europe together through mutual interest, cultural exchanges, close collaboration on scientific research and a common defense policy.

3:27 I'm sorry but so called remainers like Cameron asked for (yet another) Remainer Brexit while the UK already had one! In the lead-up to the 2016 EU referendum Cameron sought a number of exemptions and exceptions from the EU in an effort to address concerns among British voters about the UK's membership of the EU. These requests focused on four key areas: * Free movement of people: Cameron sought to restrict the rights of EU citizens to reside and work in the UK, arguing that this was putting a strain on public services and social security systems. He proposed a four-year residency requirement for EU migrants to access benefits such as tax credits and child benefit, and a new residency requirement for social housing. * Sovereignty and opt-outs (again!): Cameron sought to enhance the UK's sovereignty within the EU, arguing that the UK should have greater control over its own laws and policies. He proposed a new treaty that would allow the UK to opt out of specific areas of EU law, such as the Social Charter and the European Court of Justice's jurisdiction over employment rights. * Economic competitiveness: Cameron sought to protect the UK's economy from the full effects of the Single Market, arguing that this was needed to safeguard jobs and businesses. He proposed a review of the SM's competition rules and a mechanism for the UK to unilaterally suspend some SM rules in times of economic hardship. * Decision-making: Cameron sought to change the way the EU made decisions, arguing that the current system was too unwieldy and undemocratic. He proposed a more streamlined decision-making process that would give greater weight to the UK's vote. Cameron's efforts to secure these exemptions and reforms were met with mixed success. While he was able to achieve some limited changes, such as the introduction of a cap on the number of EU migrants claiming out-of-work benefits, he was unable to obtain the more far-reaching changes he sought. This led to a growing sense of disillusionment among British voters, and ultimately contributed to the narrow victory for the "Leave" campaign in the 2016 EU referendum. The UK played with fire, even so called remainers were not truly convinced of the utility of the political (not only economical!!!) peace, cooperation and solidarity EU project. Greetings from Belgium, EU.

As I see it, Brexit was inevitable. It would have happened sooner or later. An ever increasing anti-EU propaganda coupled with blaming the EU for everything and anything led to an ever increasing resentment. The growth of Euroscepticism in the UK can be clearly seen in the results of the GE and PE elections of the last couple of decades. Even now, most of the so called "rejoiners" talk about nothing but the economic downsides of Brexit and the benefits of joining the EU or the Single Market again. Those who venture further rarely go beyond regretting the loss of influence, prestige of the UK on the world stage. To me, this proves once again that the UK was, and still is, only interested in the EU for selfish economic benefit and glory and has absolutely no use for the European Project in its entirety. UK lost all of these when it left EU. From GOV.UK: As an independent trading nation, the UK now has over 70 trade agreements in place. When you look closer at those agreements only three have been done by UK! The rest are roll-overs from EU agreements and they need to be renegotiated in a near future. So far UK has made three agreements as an independent trade negotiator. All bad agreements. The two with New Zealand and Australia were so bad they even laughed at the negotiators of UK who signed up to a crap agreement. That is the real status of "Global Britain" as you of course already knew but the brexiteers still think that CPTPP will somehow become their liferaft even though UK exports only some £ 70,5 billion annually there. UK exports some £ 60,5 billion to Germany alone. 7 of UK´s ten most important tradepartners are EU members.

Rob, despite the all embracing gloom and current dismal news, I wish you and yours a Happy and healthy New Year. Once again, very many thanks for a brilliant and lucid exposition of the Brexit mindset. Cognitive dissonance? Yes, but we have to take into account that the people who "tip the balance" when casting their votes in the UK are also those who are most susceptible to manipulative deceit and highly vulnerable to accepting misleading propaganda verbatim. That is why they are picked out and canvassed. Brexit wasn't achieved democratically, and it didn't come about as a fair expression of "the will of the people." It resulted from a cynical, corrupt, well prepared and brilliantly executed plan. Brexit was actually a stunning success. But only for those who engineered and carried it through. In consequence, these "agencies" vastly enriched and empowered themselves in a wide variety of ways, to our cost and long lasting detriment. Voters were lied to using very skillful methods which were deployed and targeted with laser guided precision. "Democratic will of the people?" No, the people were seriously hoodwinked. Indeed, misled so persuasively that many, as you Rob rightly point out here, cannot and will not accept that they themselves were responsible for the consequent disaster that is Brexit. And certainly not by accepting any culpability or acknowledging their gullibility. However, the vast majority of voters now realise they were totally duped. Our current cohort of Brexiteers now consist of a relatively small number of diehards who will never, ever, accept that they were wrong to vote as they did. But the real Brexiteers are those who have now taken their ill-gotten gains and long since departed "offshore." They are now laughing at us, whilst celebrating how brilliantly successful their plan was.

Actually, it was achieved by the highest ever UK vote at a magnificent 17.4 million. True democracy in action, at it's finest. People voted Leave due to the extreme Maastricht Treaty in 1992 which converted a common market into a political and federal union with Europe. But without a public vote or even consultation. Nothing whatsoever to do with lies. Your desperation makes you look silly and foolish. Free from damaging EU regulation, Brexit is now taking off.

  • @federicoprice2687

    @federicoprice2687

    5 ай бұрын

@@Pickettytitch69-om7nk Actually, you're wrong on all counts. The only liars and fools are those who don't - or refuse to - understand the political, legal and democratic conditions under which the UK executed both the Maastricht Treaty and the Brexit referendum. The underlying statutory framework of the Maastricht Treaty, to which the UK had previously agreed, stipulated that it should first be "ratified by the High Contracting Parties [ie. member nations] in accordance with their respective constitutional requirement." In the cases of Denmark, France and Ireland this required a public affirmation in the form of a referendum. This did NOT apply to the UK, as there was no national or constitutional requirement to do so. Therefore, the democratic validity and legal mandate for the UK to become a signatory was, by Royal Prerogative, vested solely in the democratically elected House of Commons. Mr Picketty, assuming that you are British, your democratically elected MP at the time would have voted on your behalf - or perhaps you disapprove of our system of democracy? Therefore, the Conservative government of John Major tabled an explicit confidence motion in order to obtain Parliamentary support for passing the European Communities Amendment Act 1993, which would in turn allow the UK to ratify the Maastricht Treaty. The motion was passed with a majority of 40. There was absolutely NOTHING undemocratic about either the development of the Treaty itself, in which the UK played a full and important role, or the mandate under which it was later signed. Indeed, the individual Acts and Clauses governing all aspects of the transition from Common Market to European Union were developed by teams of experts in which UK legal and constitutional representatives played a key part. Thereafter, each and every one of the major sections of the draft Treaty were fully debated and endorsed by the democratically elected European Parliament, in which the UK was fully represented by elected British MEPs. As you put it, "true democracy in action, at its finest." So if I might ask, what part of that legal and democratic process would you have preferred to ignore, bypass, substitute or subvert? As for the Brexit referendum, the electorate voted to leave the EU with a 51.9% share of the vote, all regions of England and Wales except London voting in favour and Scotland and Northern Ireland voting against. Today, according to the latest polling data, the vast majority (approachng 60%) of the electorate now agree that this 1.3million majority based on a turnout of 72% was infact wafer thin. There are four key reasons for doubting the validity of the referendum, and there are many others: 1) From a legal basis, it was only an ADVISORY referendum, and did not actually require statutory enactment. In Hansard 10 October 2016, the then Attorney General is quoted as stating "The [EU] referendum was an advisory referendum.” The European Union Referendum Act 2015 didn’t stipulate anything about implementing the result of the vote, it just provided that there should be one. In most countries, referendums are often legally binding - for example, because the vote is on whether to amend the constitution. The UK, famously, doesn’t have a codified constitution, and therefore our votes are advisory. Therefore, by which democratic process (the democracy that you so avidly defend) was the result of a purely advisory referendum converted into one that was legally binding? Did we have a say on that? No. Were we given a vote on whether to put such a mandate into effect? No. 2) It was now been proven beyond a shadow of doubt that the Leave campaign was based on false claims and distorted by lobbyists, external funding, finely targeted electronic propaganda and riddled with corruption. The democratic validity of the vote is therefore dubious. 3) Instigating a hugely complex process of change that has enormous political, constitutional, economic, personal and trade ramifications - which were either not explained to the electorate or misrepresented - should have been subject to a confirmatory referendum. The simple fact is the sheer complexity and implications of "Getting Brexit Done" is only now dawning on the vast majority of Joe Public (you, Mr Picketty, being an exception.) It's blindingly obvious that the UK has experienced enormous economic loss, structural and demographic disadvantages, exclusions, curtailment, strictures and loss of status and influence. If our wonderful politicians can't "Get Brexit Done" then it's clear that the 'sunny uplands' will remain uninhabited. 4) Such fundamentally important and far reaching matters should never be decided by simple majority. As it was, the nation was divided, but would you still have felt so self assured had the vote been 0.1% either way? Finally, I assure you that I am not "desperate!" Whatever you might think, the overwhelming majority of voters now believe it's people like YOU who are looking silly and foolish. As for you bragging about our advantages of now being "free of damaging EU regulation," and of "Brexit now taking off", I will only say that you either haven't a clue what you're talking about, or that you live in a cave. Under a rock, in a cave.

What I have never been able to understand is why the original initiators and promoters of Brexit thought that this concept would ever be of benefit to our country. Surely these intelligent people must have done the sums and considered the options at the initial stages of formulating this basic idea, and concluded early on that their concepts simply wouldn't materialise, or at least were highly unlikely to work. Unless, that is, they thought there was a possibility of enhancing their social or political status, or their personal bank balances, for whatever reason and by whatever means. So why did they pursue it with such zeal and cruel deception, knowing in their inner hearts that the ultimate result would fail if ever voted on by the gullible electorate? To me, that's the biggest question of all, and the perpetrators of our country's demise have got off scot-free, whistling contentment to themselves as they saunter off into the sunset, with zero possibility of ever being convicted for their crimes.

Your analogy has a fatal weakness. In reality, train crashes occur, but we don't stop using trains. We don't tear up the tracks, and tell people to walk. We diagnose the causes, implement better procedures and technology. We repair or rebuild an improved track and better rolling stock, and run a better and safer train service. Every country that runs trains does that. None have ever argued not to use trains again after a crash. No wonder the rail transport infrastructure is almost all better in the EU than our many decades long privatised scam.
