With Hip Hop and R&B surpassing Rock as the most popular genre of music in the US, rap is now technically “pop” or “popular” music. It might be time to redefine how we classify the music of our culture. Murs presents his 3 Lane Theory: Hip Hop, Hip-Pop & Pop. Let’s break it down…

Kendrick is top tier. Cole is actually underrated when it comes to his lyricism and story telling. His old mixtapes are classic. Drake makes hits and has lyrical shit that most people don’t know such as Tuscan Leather and the Catch Up. His all of the lights verse. Kendrick is just so creative with his craft and his lyrics have so much meaning.

I agree there are 3 "lanes" but I'd split em up differently 1. Pop Hip-Hop This is basically anything that sounds like it's made for the radio and parties Mostly about relationships, dancing, parties, and drugs (for recreation) Ex. Drake, Nicki, Lil Pump and the other Soundcloud rappers, etc. 2. Trap Hip-Hop This is for rappers who had to come up selling drugs (for a living) and see a lot of violence and crime Ex. Future, Kevin Gates, Migos, etc. 3. Lyrical Hip-Hop This is for people who like rhyme and rhythm, are inspired by the old school, and usually are concious with their subject matter Ex. Kendrick, Cole, Lupe, etc. What y'all think? Edit: there's obviously a lot of crossover and all of these sub-genres are thriving

not really actually, he cited 2 kendrick albums as hip hop (section 80 and TPAB), while citing the same number for J Cole (2014 Forest Hills Drive and 4 your eyez only). Not only that, he is neglecting the actual lyrical content of Kendrick, who definitely has a deeper message connected to his community than J cole (For example, Good Kid mAAd city vs 2014 Forest Hills Drive, or TPAB vs 4 your eyez only). Saying J Cole is more hip hop just because of the aesthetic of his music without evaluating their message at all seems pretty superficial to me. Not only that, J Cole never has and never will make an album as unique, as true to hip hop, and as out of the "pop" mainstream as Kendrick did with TPAB.

After her first solo album, she began to become BEYONCÉ. I'm not going to credit Jay for Beyoncé's stardom because she's extremely talent but I think having Jay features and secretly dating him at the time helped her.

Great insight on Kendrick warning everyone that if he wanted to overtake their lanes, he could. Although J. Cole has sales, he's still underrated. Probably 75-80% of his sales are from true hip hop fans who want dope albums and want to support a great artist. He gets almost zero mainstream airplay.

Drake definitely cares more about album sales than putting out quality work. He's constantly biting other people's styles, has ghostwriters, and doesn't even have the courage to call his latest project an album. It's been 6 years and we're still waiting for an album that's as good as Take Care. Be real!

f grand define this generation. Do you mean like past 5 years or do you mean since the beginning of 2000? In my mind when I think of generation defining artists it's Eminem, 50, drake, Kendrick, Kanye. Size wise J. Cole doesn't come close to them in terms of how big of an effect they had on hip-hop. Side note, I do find Drake massively inconsistent, Views was wank, IYRTITL is his best album along with take care. Kendrick, Eminem and Kanye are the biggest hip-hop artists of the ones I mentioned.

Man, I love your attitude toward the game. It really is a victory for hip hop as a whole. Kinda rough to see all these rappers who only seek victory for themselves. We are changing the content of cultural memes in a huge way by what we're doing as a global hip hop community. That's the only reason I said fuck the dish pit and built a studio in my closet. It's all about contributing to the wave. You're right, though, there are different lanes. I think those are mainly just ways of speaking to souls at different stages in their progress. If you're really about your craft as a rapper, you have to pay attention to where everyone is at, not just where you want to be yourself. Excellent breakdown, homie.

Personally, I think my favorite artist, Eminem, started out as pure Hip Hop until Recovery, which he crossed over into Hip Pop and even Pop on a couple songs (Love The Way You Lie is a perfect example) and he went back to more Hip Hop on the Marshall Mathers LP 2 and changed back to Hip Pop and Pop in Revival (except Offended is a beast ass Hip Hop song). Not to mention his single with Sia, Guts Over Fear, which I’m not sure whether to qualify it as Hip Pop or Pop.

Eminem is mainly Hip-Hop, and he's just dabbled in some Pop sometimes for variety, like in some parts of Recovery and Revival. MMLP 2 was a little bit rock-rap, but still strong Hip-Hop. His last 2 albums have been pure Hip-Hop too, and not pop

This dudes definition of what makes something pop is kinda wack. “This guy dated a pop star so that takes him out of hip hop” “oh he’s selling too many records so he’s definitely pop” like what? How are you going to judge whether something is truly hip hop by looking at how much production it has or how much it sells? Lol why doesn’t look at the music itself and not other outside factors that don’t affect how the music itself sounds or comes across?

Respect to Murs! I’ve had a 2 lane theory for years now, I’m also an old head. I’ve always felt that you are either Hip Hop, or you are POP. Wether you craft your lyrics into a dope story, or some sick bars? You care about the culture and about remaining true to what’s Hip, on the block, Not caring if your music gets played on the airwaves or sold to the masses. Maybe I need to rethink this mentality after listening to your video, and separate the Hip Pop, from the Pop? There are some bangers out there. But I gotta remain true to my love of Hip Hop, the culture, and it’s purity.

But Illmatic had producers who were well known with the Hip Hop community like Pete Rock, Preemo, Q-Tip, etc. If he had Hip Hop producers who were just popular within the mainstream like Puff Daddy, Dr Dre, even someone like DeVante Swing then it would be Hip Pop.
