Everyone has their opinions, I think the weekend is overrated and always sounds the same, lots of his songs always sound the same. He’s one dimensional for me, but I guess that dimension has served him very well. I’ve liked some of his songs, but generally, drake has more well known work to fall back on. I don’t hear a lot more drake than I do the weekend, and for a lot longer. Talent wise, the weekend is a better singer, but I think in terms of their respective genres drake is in far more inventive projects. He’s had a much more versatile music career, whereas the weekend has always been pop.

I fell in love with The Weeknd’s original trilogy catalogue during my freshman year of college (2016). I could tell then he was a cut above everyone else, he just has a mind wired for music. When you’re that gifted, you can’t possibly be held down by anyone else. I’m not surprised he knew doing his own thing would be in his best interest.

Seemed like Drake tried to big brother Abel when Abel knew that his ceiling and potential was magnitudes higher solo than if he would have been suppressed and controlled on Drakes label. Abel is his own man and wants to control both his own image and how his music is constructed.

Drake already had songs like that before to TC. Drake was influenced by Abel for Take Care, but I would argue Dtake already had the moody atmospheric beats produced by 40 prior to that album, and it's evident on his first mixtape and debut album So Far Gone and Thank Me Later. Abel even said he was influenced by Drake's sound early on but Ross is spinning it as if Drake convinced Abel that.

I also feel like PND would be a lot bigger without OVO because Drake seems like he doesn’t put in much effort to push the people in his label. This feels similar with Kendrick and Asap Rocky I believe. He brought them on his big tour when they were still coming up and it looked like a nice gesture at the time but Drake would later on sneak diss and throw that type of stuff in peoples faces later on. Kendrick would end up bringing attention to Drake using him (and other artists) to try and legitimize himself more in the space of rap/hip hop and not just be perceived as some soft singing rapper, and Drake manipulated his “generosity” to tap into a sound that was more authentic than his, and setting a trend for Drake to continue riding other rappers’ waves for years. It all conveniently sets up Drake so he could “Big Brother” his competition later on. The Weeknd was not privy to industry workings as much and he was starstruck enough to give Drake the songs he wanted when they first collaborated but thankfully realized he had all the talent and creativity to be more successful on his own. Drake was definitely hurt by Weeknd not signing with him, possibly because in his mind, The Weeknd owed him that in some way. With the ghost writing allegations and the chronic confusion in identity that Drake suffers from, it all makes sense looking back.

The Weeknd is so much more talented imo. The last few years show this. His versatility is amazing. He covers so many different sounds and vibes and drake has like 3 songs I like by him lol
