Today we're driving the 2024 Acura TLX Type-S! Under the hood is a turbocharged 3.0L V6 making 355 HP and 354 lb-ft of torque sent to all four wheels via SH-AWD. This system is able to send up to 70% of the torque to the rear wheels and up to 100% of that torque to either the left or right wheel. Real torque vectoring!     I have the 2023 Acura TLX Type S. And I love my red analog gauge cluster. I keep the interior ambient lights red so everything matches. I could had waited a few more months and got the 2024. But personally I didn't see much of a difference.

    I owned a 2008 TL Type S in the Kinetic Blue Pearl. I got it to 222XXX miles. It was such a fun car to drive. Something about Acuras during that time to me were magical. The TSX, first gen RDX and of course the TL were a lot of fun. The 2013-2018 Acura years were to me the worst, but I'm glad they're back on track making Type S and models that bring excitement.

    Surround camera button on the end of the wiper stalk. 😉 Just got one here in Texas in this exact spec with the US wheel/tire. Love this car so much. All your praise and criticisms are spot on. Always some compromise with modern cool cars. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Great video nonetheless.

    RLX was 310hp. The 377hp RLX needed a gay hybrid system with 3 electric motors so that doesn't count. The TLX-S is still faster. Just needs a tune.

    @@scottishd0g87Tunes don’t do much because the engine is bottlenecked with small port heads and small turbo. 10 speed is also a weak transmission. Many have blown them. You can add a JB4 and get a tad more. Acura locked ECU down so these can’t be tuned. They know it won’t last if modded. They don’t want the engine to rev past 6k. I talked to developers about drivetrain. They designed this to have power from low rpm all the way to 6k. Instant gratification. Secret is small head ports and small turbo that spools faster.

    If you buy this car, get the wheel and tire warranty. Maintaining the wheels on this thing, especially if you live in the U.S. (potholes), is a nightmare.

    This car really makes me miss my old ‘08 TL Type S 😔. But picked the IS500 over this. Idc if the interior is from 2015 I just couldn’t say no to a high revving N.A V8.

    Great review! I love that colour combo in that Type-S. If you ever come down here in Ontario, please take the time to review my ride. I have a 2010 Acura TL SH-AWD 6 speed manual. Of course I added a a few modifications tastefully lol.

    Of course a lot of other cars are quicker. Bmw, Audi, Cadillac. But those cars are also in the shop getting chhhit fixed more. Acuras are solid as a rock.

    Amen to that. I have the original Type S: a 2001 CL Type S. It was built in June 2000, so it will soon turn 24! The engine still sounds awesome, and drives so smoothly. I am hoping I can afford a 2025 TLX Type S next year, but I will also keep my original. :-)

    It has its limits though. Ecu is locked for a reason. Plus transmission is a weak link in this car. Small heads with small turbo makes instant boost at low rpm, but falls flat after 6k. So Acura tuned this car perfectly from low 1600 rpm to 6k. That makes a perfect daily car. To gain another 100hp, you need heads, manifold, and turbo. Over 15k. Then you are still stuck with a weak transmission. It’s too bad Acura didn’t go with new ZF transmission.

    So I have an Accord 2.0 10AT…when launching it’s always been suggested to do it out of 2nd gear because that 1st gear is short. So I guess they did it like that on purpose for the Acura. Makes sense.

    Love my type-s; stage one make 370hp and 430+tq and wakes up the car and gets the 0-60 to 4.3. Boltons will make that even quicker. Only downside is the brakes if you track it but some better rotors, pads and fluid do wonders! Love the video!

    They did that in the 2002 TL Type-S where the computer shift from 1st-2nd and 2nd-1st. You couldn’t do it yourself.

    I love everything about the TLX Type S except for the terrible fuel economy. I drive close to 20k miles per year and that would add up to a lot of gasoline expense over the year. Could I afford it? Yes. But I don’t want to.

    @@ryanb8736 I definitely don't want a weak powered hybrid. I'm not trying to get 40 mpg but 19/25 is pretty lame, especially considering that the much more powerful, albeit even more expensive, M340i easily gets over 30 mpg on the highway.

    Yeah….i checked this car out…I couldn’t get past the price and the small backseat. But ultimately,maybe I could’ve lived with the backseat as I only have one young child. But where I am(NY)…I would’ve been $63k OTD….it was nice. But not $63k nice IMO

    That's the first i'm hearing that you cannot shift it into M1. If it starts in M2 at a stop, does it drop to M1 at launch? But this car has me wanting to rush down to the Acura dealership. I am a bit older so prefer something a bit more "mature" than the Integra Type-S. BTW, love your commentary. You have good, non-cliche commentary and you're not constantly rattling off the long list of competitors. (watched your Integra Type-S video, too). Subbed to your channel!

The car should be in sport or sport+ (forget which one I did it in, haven’t tested all the modes to see if it’s limited to certain modes) and the transmission needs to be in sport manual. Then when you are at a stop it will shift to m1. The car will shift out of m1 super fast though on its own, without you doing it via the paddles and while it felt disappointing at first, after a few stops I realized m1 gear is super short and m2 feels like a normal first gear anyway, so yea while Acura has some safeguards built into this car like m1 gear and auto up shift at redline even in manual mode at all gears, it’s not that big a deal, this is not a 1/4 mile car, this is a spirited sedan that shines in the twisties and on the highway. The car is very fun to drive with great creature comforts and audio.

    100 percent can switch to m1 must be at complete stop, computer won’t let u to switch to a lower gear if it’s not supposed to be there comfortably.

    That being said 1st gear is extremely short, if ur getting max torque at 1500 rpm’s and there’s 10 gears, do the math…not much room in the first two gears

    I have my rlx sh '18, and test drove type s.... 2018-2020 RLX SH ANY DAY ANY TIME over type S... It is not worth paying 60k for 4.6sec to 60moh in crammed can of compact sedan size vehicle

    It is a look that will probably grow on you. But this new style is so weird at first glance. Alot of cross branding copy. Like the hellcat spoiler, Toyota slit and edge and curve everywhere. Only thing i like is the interior.

    There’s a problem with the title to this video: TLX-S = 11.9 pounds per horsepower ITS = 10 pounds per horsepower The ITS will easily pull ahead of a TLX-S on a roll. You can’t argue with math and basic physics.

    @@Mike-lt6sj The TLX-S and the ITS have the same 1/4mile trap speed of 105 mph. If the TLX -S was truly faster on a roll, then it would have a higher trap than the ITS. The fact that the traps are the same proves that the ITS closes the gap on a roll and will eventually pass the TLX-S with enough runway.

    The type s has about 80hp/cylinder or 157hp/L, and this car is about 100hp/L. So inefficient. And my Acura drives the trans like that too. U can’t downshift into first gear

    No question the Integra Type-S is more nimble and fun to drive, but it's tough to argue with this for a daily/grand tourer highway car

    Its more nimble than it looks when turning. The SH-AWD does make a difference. Its gonna get smoked if you try to race this like a muscle car.

    My gla 45 amg is 4 doors and faster than this by more than a little bit. 4.1 60 time. Quarter mile on 12.4. Got it for 40k used and I love it.

    They have the wrong engine in that car. Should be a 3.5 and HP needs to be closer to 400hp to really be competitive.

    This car does everything good but nothing great. And it looks good doing it. Thats what makes it appealing for the money. Yes you can get a BMW pay about 10k more and be faster. But then reliability becomes an issue. The Genesis would be the closest but it leans a little more on the softer side.

    I think the last gen tlx was better looking. Woulda been nice to see that gen with 350hp. This thing doesn't look bad but not a fan. It's also too heavy for just 350hp (300 wheel). A letdown to the type s badge if you ask me. So much less performance than competitors at same price range and less.

    These are great daily cars, but won’t respond well to tune for more power. Acura designed this engine to have boost at low rpm and keep it all the way to 6k. They achieve it with small port heads, small intake runners and a small turbo which makes power instantly. That way you don’t feel lag. The problem is getting more than 400hp out of this. You would need to change the heads, intake, and turbo. Then crack the codes to tune past 6k rpm to allow more power. Now the problem is 10 speed. It’s not a performance transmission. Many have had issues with them. Don’t keep launching it or it will pop. Some have popped axles in these too. So this is a perfect daily for someone who is happy with the power and stock tuning. It makes power at all rpm’s. That’s what makes it a great daily. It’s never lagging. So it’s a huge trade off Acura made to get instant gratification and have reliability too. My biggest gripe is it shifts at 6k even in manual. So it makes an awful track car. It’s a huge weak link. It also won’t shift into first gear because the transmission will grenade. It’s not a performance transmission. Acura chose this transmission because it was cheap for them to build in house. It’s all profit. So they add protection so it lasts. So no downshifting into first and no revving past 6k.

    @@drivescene6747Not sure why it bothers you. I’m sharing my knowledge with others so they know what this car is. That way they don’t think they are gonna tune it and expect 100 hp instantly. It’s not gonna happen. This engine was designed for instant power at low rpm for that instant gratification. That’s a great thing for a daily driver. Transmission is also in sync with engine as it stays in boost throughout the whole rev range. Problem with large turbo and large port heads is it’s dead under 3500 rpm. You need to rev past that to have power. The good thing is you can make power till 7500 plus. So you have that 4k rpm operating range of power. Big turbo will give massive hp gains within that range. Acura went a safer approach for daily driving fun. Small ports, small turbo making instant power from 1500rpm to 6k. You are still getting your 4k operating rev range of power, just at a safer and more instant way. Problem is it’s capped out due to small ports and turbo. So it’s a huge trade off. But this setup makes for an amazing daily car. Always has power. No waiting for turbo to spool up. It’s clever how Acura did it. The AWD puts the power down perfectly.

    @@ryanb8736 that’s just the thing, that’s not entirely accurate. You’re saying that guys are struggling to get over 400hp out of this, which is just not the case. A simple tune from ktuner is 52whp and 100ft/lbs of torque. The platform is still somewhat new so more tuneability is still being tested in order for these tuners to sell reliable packages. It’s not that the platform can’t handle the power, it’s due to tunes not being available. As I have mentioned to you previously, there are many guys running over 400hp with ktuner and there is one guy so far in the 500hp range running 11s in the 1/4 mile.

    With destination and comparably equipped, the M340i xDrive is about $70K. You used to be able to get the TLX Type S for ~$56K with the wheel package. They've since increased the price. Still a good deal, however.

    I sometimes use Car and Driver's testing times which I should've stated in the video as they now use a 1-foot rollout (drag racing technique) for their tests. Admittedly I can see how this could be taken as a non-accurate number. Maybe I'll state Motor Trend's numbers going forward if that's what the people would rather see

    @@ryanb8736 I had a 2019 GT1 Stinger and it was a great car. Had it for 3 years with 0 issues. Car was a champ! And it looked and ran amazing. Kia did a great job overall with the Stinger. I sold it and got a C8 but the Stinger was a champ! DIG monster and a better car than this Acura.

    @@cassideyousley406 I got $30k for my 2019 Stinger so it worked out just fine. But this article was about the TLX Type-S and I just pointed out what you can get that compares. I just pointed out that the Stinger GT1 gives you way better performance in every way for less money. Stock vs stock, Stinger DESTROYS the TSX-Type S in performance.

    2 door vs 4. B58 is a much better performance engine. ZF8 is a performance transmission, where Honda 10 speed is a generic transmission. TLX is close to maxed out on power, unless you change heads, manifold, and turbo. B58 can be heavily modded for a lot cheaper and very easy. TLX is a competitor for M340. M240 is a smaller two door M340.
