    I think the reason "most players don't use Feats", is that they're looking at dndbeyond character creation stats, and Feats aren't included in the free rules (or, I think, Brawler is the only one you can access for free), so Of Course, most folk won't be using them.

    Feats used to be a core part of the character's build back in 3.0/3.5e and it was varied and had a lot of choices. In 5e it was more limited in acquisition AND in total available feats. The fighting style being put back into feats is also a kinda backstep to 3.0/3.5e where it was originally that you had to take those feats for things like Two Weapon Fighting. So nice to see how they are going back to some of the better system setups that 3.0/3.5e had that were changed in the mindset of "make things simpler to make combat faster".

    At my table heroic inspiration is base 14 and you roll a D6. Maybe that's too high for many. But the idea is that you minimum get 15 on the roll which covers most ability rolls and increases crit change. The whole idea of inspiration is to be heroic so I think it works. My table loves it. Players dont know exactly how they work and there for can not tactically plan around them because the DM might just say ”you can’t do that” or the DM has to figure out how these things should work in this particular situation. Not streamlined and therefore not tactical. If we streamline these rules to make their uses clear, like the ”falling on creature” rule from tashas - the game will be both streamlined and more tactical. Thats how I view it It is true however, like you said, that Weapon masteries specifically will add more time to melee attacks because its just a new feature, not a streamlined rule that already existed or was implied somewhere spread out across 5 different books (like stealth rules).

    By limiting the Stat increases in the backgrounds. Players will be picking backgrounds to better fit their class instead of character. MONK will need a background with DEX and WIS or they will start with +2 (If they get both to 15 to their class stats and will need to spend their first ASI to increase stat (+1 each) now AC 16 and hit damage bonus = +3 at level 4....... I am upset they removed custom background from 2024 PHB. I play Adventurers League and unless they allow this depending on the backgrounds may not be able to make character I want. Since they got rid of 1/2 Elf +1/+1/+2 they could have just put the Stat increase in the determining stats section and remove them from species/Background.

  • @XanderHarris1023

    @XanderHarris1023

    They are moving custom backgrounds to the DMG. For reasons. Even with the third Ability Score being added to all the backgrounds you might not be able to find the exact fit. In the UA Farmers got +2 con, and +1 Wisdom (I can't even think of a class that this would be optimal for but it does make sense for a Farmer). Let's say they changed it to Con, Wis, and Str in the new PHB, now it is a viable option for a fighter and other strength based classes that want a decent con score but Monks and Druids probably want their + 1 in Dex making Farmer not a good background for them. Not to mention it might come with an origin feat that doesn't fit your character concept.

    Completely agree. Stat bonuses should not have been made part of the background. I once played an Arcane Trickster Rogue with the Sage background. My backstory was that I was a Wizards apprentice that was dismissed for not taking my training seriously. Now this background gives Wis, Int and Con. So if I took this background on a Rogue today I'd only have a 15 Dex which I'm not going to do. So instead of taking an interesting role playing choice they are forcing us to take one that offers the right stat boost. I also wish they didn't include the feat. Many of the backgrounds have feats like skilled which frankly I have no interest in taking.

    Eh, I never really cared much for backgrounds and 'species.' I've never been a fan of Star Ward Cantina style campaigns with different species/races for every day of the month. I just want to play my medieval-ish fantasy game with well designed mechanics and style. I'll wait and see how that works out in the full game. There was a reason feats were optional to begin with, as for the last couple of editions they just turned the game into a min/max design nightmare. Not that I'm against feats, but I kind of liked the smaller number of larger impact feats in some ways, even if the design was somewhat flawed. I really care for the whole 'multiverse' issue, that's soo overdone today in popular media; perhaps only superseded by time travel as a narrative crutch. I guess I'm just not as excited by what's been revealed so far, but I'm optimistic about improved mechanics and design.

    I hate both of those things. ASI's should just be a thing to choose. Backgrounds should give proficiencies, but ASI's are too game altering to and "lock in" builds. I.e. if the dex/wis ASI is given to street urchin you will only have street urchin rogues. Masteries are too poweful, giving effects that render many class features (like the swashbuckler's rakish audacity) less important if not a worse option over a mastery, OR, they just outdo cantips (including the dreaded silvery barbs since prone gives many attacks advantage) or first level spells like faerie fire, (which is also about granting advantage).

    a) each background can be reskinned however you want. You don't have to choose a 'typical' Urchin Background to be someone who was a poor street kid. If you do point buy or array before background, you can dump the boosted stats to even things out. b) I should really hope masteries are better than Cantrips. Isn't that the point of them?

    @@apjapki 1. then just use tasha's. Why force the default? 2. no. who the hell said masteries should be as powerful as or more powerful than first level spells, which are a limited resource?

    @@SerifSansSerif Cantrips by default are an unlimited resource. If masteries are to close the martial caster divide, then yes they should outshine cantrips. Outshining first level spells is a subjective assertion I basically don't agree with. The most powerful 1st level spells are still more powerful. The 1st level spells that imitate melee combat are outshined.....and..... GOOD. Whoah, martial can fight now. It's pure hyperbole. Nothing here is better than what a battle master could already do - it's just the same again but with more mastery dice. I feel like you are joining the conversation late and missing huge parts of what the intent is with this edition.

    They've got nothing. Not a single conrete rule, just loose ideas put together in a rush. It seems like they haven't even started building the "new" system yet. It's just a desperate attempt to stay relevant in the face of Daggerheart and DC20's sudden relevance. For all of our sakes I hope Wotc never becomes relevant again. It's sad because Crawford is a brilliant designer.

    I hope WotC paid you well for this glowing review. I seem to be in the minority that the 2024 rules feel like making a bunch of house rules canon. I am not impressed. Also, I think the new species and backgrounds rules are dumb. A seven foot orc is as strong as a three foot gnome as long as they were both soldiers. That makes zero sense and breaks the fantasy for me. If you cant make a build work because your stats arent optimized, fix your imagination, not the rules. Hard pass on this WotC.

    If you don’t want your gnome soldier to be as strong as your orc soldier, don’t give them the same stats. It’s as simple as that.

    Wrong! IC is a DC20/Daggerheart shill. He gets paid $10,000 per glowing review. WOTC doesn't pay IC nothing because they got tired of his nonoptomized suggestions and the fact that he made fun of Create Food and Water. No one makes fun of Create Food and Water and gets away with it!

    I agree. Change was made becauses Races are "offensive" to the constantly offended demographic Wizards is targeting. It's dumb Half Races are being removed too. Their logic on that being removed makes no sense.
