Happy Monday everyone, hope you all had a great weekend! Now that we've spent some time with the new Kia Carnival, updated Chrysler Pacifica, and Honda Odyssey, the latest Toyota Sienna may not be the sexiest or most technically minivan, but it remains the only minivan to combine electrification with AWD and at 36 MPG combined, it still rated to get 6 MPG better versus the Pacifica Plug-in hybrid. We got 32 MPG in our testing, which is like 14 MPG better than most of its V6 powered rivals. This is still our favorite minivan in the segment.

Out of curiosity, I looked through the old videos to see which was the last new car you reviewed that still had a traditional key and it was the 2019 Nissan Frontier. I don't think you can buy a car with a regular key anymore unless it's a base model.

My Pacifica hybrid has averaged 70 MPG over 9,600 miles. If it wasn't for two road trips it would be even higher. I am watchful for the problems to come, but so far it has been reliable. I am over maintaining it in hopes to avoid the Chrysler curse. It has an LG battery as well, so hopefully they will recall it in a few years and give me a free replacement.

Best car decision I made in my life. Traded in my MB GLE450 last year for this (got a killer trade in value) and so glad we did especially with where gas prices are. Hybrid powertrain is solid and the transition between gas/electric is seem less. CVT tranny doesn’t bug me too much. Averaging 32 MPG overall with 4,000 miles on the clock. Also, glad we got the Xse with the sporty look and “premium” taillights. Ride isn’t too stiff with the 20 inch rims and thicker sways. Yeah I miss the infotainment from the MB but I don’t miss $300 oil changes and future out of warranty service/repair costs …

My family and I rented the LE trim for a road trip from NC to FL and it was GREAT. I wasn’t trying to hypermile or anything, we had 2 kids and the trunk was stuffed with luggage etc. and I averaged 36.5mpg on the drive down. We split the trip into 2 days on the way home, the 2nd half of the drive we hit traffic a few times and I was coasting along in ev mode. Ended up averaging 40.2mpg!! I was skeptic when I read the screen but when I did the math at the pump before returning the van, it was accurate. Because it was the LE, the tires were 235 width, not 255, so that probably helps a bit, and the drag coefficient is better than that XSE trim. A very smooth ride, plenty of acceleration power for changing lanes and making quick passes and merging, a dream compared to our actual family car, a 2010 Mazda 5. Someday I’ll get one of these...

  • @homoerotic85

We rented one of these a while back ago and we were blown away by it. I have always hated vans, thought they were ugly and why would you buy that when you could get a 3 row SUV that looks much better. That was before driving this! Now, I would actually like to have one and I don't even have kids!! The way it drives and rides is amazing. The gas mileage was even more impressive! I figured it would be slow especially considering the powerful BY it previously had. But no, it doesn't feel slow at all! Whole the 0-60 isn't impressive at all the electric engine provides instant torque so it makes it feel much faster than I guess it really is. It never felt sluggish at all. The motor actually sounds really good for what it is. It sounds like a 5 cylinder. It's crazy how big it is and how great gas mileage it gets. It is a vehicle that is enjoyable to drive or ride in for hours. I don't think I would ever actually drive one because I just don't have the need for it like I have a Camaro now. But if I ever need a larger vehicle for storage this would be my first pick, if I had kids this would also be my first choice.

It is becoming very hard to park cars without the sensors and sometimes dangerous. I would prefer the back up and surround sensors instead of the toe kick open & close doors. I love the design and way it looks, wished they were more readily available during this time of car shortages. It's a shame that it's so underpowered. Slow is expected, but I bet after you load up 7 people and some luggage, it'll probably feel and accelerate like a snail. Hopefully Honda does better with their next redesign.

I honestly don’t understand people that like the way this thing looks. To each their own, but this is a minivan. It shouldn’t look this excessively aggressive. I’m have a 2016 Sienna that I would love to replace with one of these, but my wife won’t go for it because she doesn’t want to drive something that looks like it’s from a fast furious movie, and I don’t have a counter argument because she’s not wrong.

A fast paced but informative review. Thank you. I didn't see any info regarding road noise, wind noise or ride quality but there was a lot about the touchscreen size and which interior materials are soft or not. I wish Toyota would try some other motor combinations instead of building more 4 cylinder hybrid combo's year after year that are all the same. A potent 3.0L or 3.3L V6 hybrid version would be a lot more interesting. A V6 would be quieter, faster, tow more and get better MPG too if they simply put the right sized rims on it, geared it correctly and got rid of the large flat panel grill spanning across the front like a lower sail. That's pretty much a wind break perpendicular to the air flow. Not aerodynamic. Even if you like the look of it (which I don't since it looks like a child designed it with a disproportionally big mouth) a wide flat panel is like pushing a brick down the road. Why do that on purpose? It adds wind noise while cutting the MPG for the life of the vehicle with no benefit. The grill should have been normal or 1/2 that size. Then add 20" rims on a minivan: How many soccer Mom's, folks hauling expensive gear or family groups are going to dive hard into freeway ramps to see how many G's it can pull while driving a 4 cylinder minivan? That's not what it's for. A 5,000 lb 4 cyl minivan can't corner or go fast anyway. It's long, wide and pretty heavy. Add a couple passengers and it'd pass 5,000 lbs. Large rims add extra unsprung weight since metal weighs more than rubber and air of normal sized rims. Extra weight outboard of the struts/springs lowers ride quality because road impacts into a rim MUST be absorbed by the suspension and ultimately the body of the vehicle and it's occupants. The more rim weight, the bigger the impact will be. 20" rims on a passenger vehicle leaves little room for a sidewall either so it will always get more pinch flats from curbs or potholes and have lower ride quality and higher noise, expense, rolling resistance and wind resistance. There's not many upsides to huge rims. It's just physics. 20" rims drops the efficiency 2 -3 MPG forever with little benefit. That may be fine on a Corvette or a muscle car intended for it but this is a 4 cylinder minivan. Look at the window sticker of various sport versions of other car and SUVs. The ones with the large rim package often has a different window sticker showing that version gets lower MPG, has less driving range and usually costs more besides. What a deal. Efficiency goes down proportionally with higher mass or rotating mass diameter. it's probably the square ^2 of the diameter actually. Acceleration also goes down when rotating mass is higher. We're stuck with the trend until fuel prices get high or until consumers get more educated. Back when they used to care about ride quality and MPG, cars and vans had 14" rims in the 70's and 80's. Next came 15", then 16", 17", and 18" with lower MPG and it kept going. 19", 20", 22" 24 ... 26" Gee. wow It's impressive seeing which young drivers don't understand basic physics and have money to blow on things they don't understand. Most of them have never put in a camshaft or know if their car has 1, 2 or 4 cams and did it come with rod bearings or not. Uh... that's right below the tie rod bearings of course by the oil gallery. unless it has the new self seizing 2-angle hydraulic lifters on the rear pinion. Oh well. This van could get 38mpg by simply using correctly sized components instead of being outfitted by a marketing group. If they fixed the rims and made a V6 hybrid I might even buy one.

Yeah. I'm wondering why the AWD option doesn't add HP/Tq to the totals? If a 100hp motor was in the rear this thing would have pretty impressive acceleration for a hybrid minivan. Not that it's not adequate as is though.

I have a '21 Limited and it rarely gets down to the EPA 36 mpg rating. In over 18k miles, I've seen less than 36 mpg twice. It often gets 40 mpg or more and that converts to some serious range. IMHO, 600 mile range is peak luxury, not having to bother with gas stations. OTOH, I'm not enamored with the seats. They're just a bit too firm for my back and after a few hours my back starts to complain. The lumbar adjustments just make it worse. As noted in the video, there are many things that Toyota could have done better, but the efficiency makes this van a winner. Only the Pacifica PHEV comes close.
