With over 130,000 units sold, what started out as an experiment for ‪@Subaru‬ has become the 3rd best-selling model in their US lineup. For 2021, the #SubaruCrosstrek gets some minor changes but the biggest change is found under the hood where the new #Crosstrek gets the bigger 2.5L F-4 in the new #CrosstrekSport and Limited trims. With an additional 30 HP it makes the latest #Crosstrek an even better small SUV that should continue to be a top-seller for #Subaru.

I have a 2019 manual premium. Honestly if the 2.5 engine was sold w a manual in premium or sport I would seriously consider a trade up. The manual truly allows the choice of gearing for excellent spirited driving. 1rst gear is a very low granny gear and a quick shift to second allows redline to come quickly it is also relatively a lower ratio. 3rd stretches your legs, 4th is shorter as is 5th, 6th is long. The gearing work real well w the 2.0 once you learn it’s temperament. Coming from a 2006 Audi A3 manual, the Crosstrek shares the BRZ steering ratio pinion gear gives the manual Crosstrek a huge fun value. If only the 2.5 was available w a stick.

We picked up a Crosstrek Premium recently, and that was after we test drove the Subaru Sport. While the Sport had the 2.5 the one thing we noticed was that the Premium's seats were more comfortable. We couldn't really afford the Limited, and the driver power seat was something that was nicer than having to pump the Sport's seat up or down to adjust it. Since my wife will be driving it more than I will the 2.0 isn't a big deal, where she drives to work it's all back country roads, hardly ever on the highway, and with the "manual" such as it is, when winter comes she can put it in a lower gear to deal with the snow that we get here. All in all for us, the Premium in some cases is a better option.

I find that the paddle shifters in the previous Crosstrek are useful in areas with multiple short/steep/rolling hills. The CVT alone has a hard time keeping up with the rapidly changing torque demands of, for example, a steep uphill that comes immediately after a steep descent. Put it in "2nd gear" yourself with a flick or two of the paddle and you've got all the power you need.

@@phillm156 That would be great if they had access to the Toyota engine, but that's pretty high tech unit. The Toyota is also WAY easier to work on. For example, a simple sparkplug change on the 2.5 boxer engine is listed as 2.5 hours of labor at a Subaru dealership, because you have to either partially disassemble the vehicle or use an engine lift to lift the engine out to get to them. This is why almost everyone uses inline four turbos, as they are way easier to work on and offer best midrange power, which is what most regular drivers care about.

I test drove one of these recently. I'm right now torn between this and the Impreza Sport hatchback (in my opinion, the better handling of the Impreza lineup opposed to the other trims). While the Impreza Sport drove close to a low-to-the-ground sports car (just not as fast, but I'm not complaining about that), the Crosstrek Sport had a "dune buggy" feel to it that I did quite enjoy. It would just come down to if I can find a good deal on either a new, certified, or used one, and if I can find them in my area (used Impreza Sport hatchbacks are especially rare in the St. Louis area).

My wife has a 2018 Limited, creature comforts aside the car drives sedately but safely. Our main gripe is that we always get around 25 mpg between fill-ups while the trip computer consistently shows we're getting 28+. It's quieter than a 2016 Toyota Rav4, but the road noise still makes the upgraded car-audio experience less fun when the speed climbs above 50 mph. And it does struggle for power even when moderately pushed on the on-ramp for instance. Overall, it's a great vehicle for the "middle 80%" who care that their car looks nice and is safe, but don't mind the obvious "built to a cost" feel. Overall, we'd still have bought one in hindsight.

There are so many parts that could go wrong...Not to mention these 1.5L turbos does way worse in fuel economy than the crosstrek does in the 2.5 and none of these small block turbos are any better on power...or torque. I only have one criticism of the crosstrek: it tends to drift on the highways. Lane keep assist and semi autonomous driving technology helps tho.

But no independent rear suspension. Twist beam torsion bar is a big compromise just to be able to get all-wheel drive into the Mazda. And the six-speed automatic transmission is a dog. The Mazda is a front wheel drive based car, the Crosstrek and all Subarus are full all-wheel drive, meaning that the the engine is faced in the correct direction, no compromises were made, as the car was built from the ground up to be all-wheel drive. @@hellochrisdo I was literally a heartbeat away from buying a carbon edition CX30. But it was not until I actually went for a real road test while they were inspecting my trade-in that I got a real feel for the car and I hated that six speed, it was either racing or too low of a gear. I was set on keeping my Fiesta ST for another year, but decided to stop in to a Subaru dealership and test drove a crosstrek Limited. The only one they can find was one with 10,000 mi, which happened to be their loaner car. Way better than the CX30. It was always in the correct gearing ratio for the speed, and when you floored it it moved accordingly. I felt like with the CX30 I had to beat it to death to get it to go. Surprisingly actually, because I just assumed that the CX30 would be the better car. It may be sportier handling, but I think that's due to the fact that it's lower to the ground. Anyways, I don't think that somebody buys a CUV/SUV for sporty handling. I would have gotten a GTI if that was the case. I even test drove a RAV4 and I hated that too, and that one has an 8 speed transmission, but no matter what was happening, the car was not in its optimal ratio for the speed it was going. I was always an anti-CVT guy, because that's just how car guys are, but they've come a long way since the early days. You can't even really tell It's a CVT with the way they fake gear changes. Lol! It's best to go on actual test drives in real world scenarios. I live in the New York City area, and it's very hard to get a real test drive. I had to go to New Jersey dealers to find out what these cars are really about. Oh, also at first I was dead set on getting a CX30 turbo, but it was not until I heard that they were major oil consumption issues that I ran away from them. *This comment was edited because I mentioned something that I already said in my original comment. 👍

I have the paddles in my 2016 legacy and they are very useful in snowy conditions to simulate upshifts to get some engine braking. It works well because CVTs tends to coast to easily once you are off the gas pedal. I also use them sometimes when going down steep hills upstate NY to keep that coasting at bay. I don't know if people use them like that but if they don't in certain conditions they should, granted they do it correct and don't screw anything up.

People need to stop asking for a turbo engine for a lot of reasons 1) Turbo burns more gas, especially small block turbos 2) Asking for a wrx engine is stupid, just buy a damn wrx 3) even if a turbo exist, its gonna be a 1.5L turbo which you get equivalent horsepower to the 2.5L naturally aspirated. it will not give you more power.....There is a reason why all other manufactures like Kia, Honda, and even Toyota puts a turbo in their cars they are not even 2.0L, its all 1.5L....There is no efficiency gains from doing this. There is a reason why crosstrek 2.5L is even more gas efficient than a CRV turbo.....that only gets 190HP. 4) A turbo does not make your car feel peppier, what you people want is a peppy car that makes it feel like it has more power. This is not the result of a turbo this is the result of the transmission that is tuned for torque. There is a reason why all these small block 1.5L turbo all have way higher torque figures to compensate for the smaller engine. 5) A 3.0L v6 is more efficient in power and gas than your stupid 1.5L turbo or a 2.0L turbo. V6's in Acuras and Lexus gets the same similar mileage as subaru's own 2.4L turbo. 6) MSRP of the car will increase, general overall maintenance cost of a car with a turbo is more expensive. And 95% of you asking for a turbo never even considered buying a car in this segment either way. Your complaints are moot. Forestor XT turbo barely sold compared to regular models. This is the same case with Honda CRVs, and even mazda CX5 themselves. Its not what you small amount of anal people want its what the market demands. Simply market does not demand a turbo at such high price point. And lastly, Dont make an excuse about the fact turbos are good at high elevations. How many people live at high elevations or drive through high elevations daily vs the majority of those that live in large cities (even rural) areas that are at or close to sea levels?

The 2.5L is a must with this vehicle and, if you want blind-side monitoring and cross-traffic alert safety systems, you need to put down $1,600 extra and get a moon roof + other stuff. This puts it just below $30,000. At this price, why not get a proper and larger CR-V or RAV-4, which don't make you get unnecessary stuff for safety. Alternatively, get the CX-30 with safety systems + AWD at $26,400 or an Impreza with same amount of interior volume and safety systems for $25,500.
