Review: 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport - More Power and Other Improvements!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I review the refreshed 2021 Subaru Crosstrek in its new Sport trim. The biggest improvement for 2021 is the addition of the more powerful 2.5L engine on the Sport and Limited trims, and the extra 30 horsepower really helps the Crosstrek to feel stronger. The all wheel drive system also now gains a dual-mode X-Mode system for better performance off-road or in snowy conditions. The cheapest way to get the 2.5L engine is in this Sport trim that starts at $27,565 including destination. Overall, the Crosstrek is a strong competitor in this segment with its above average ground clearance, visibility and roomy back seat but it still is less powerful than many competitors and the CVT transmission still isn't very natural feeling. What do you think of the 2021 Crosstrek? Thanks to Subaru for providing this Crosstrek to review!

I just purchased a Subaru Crosstrek Limited. I didn't buy it to go mudding or such, I chose it to go touring the sites on my bucket list. It's main capabilities will be used to get me out of trouble not into it. To me it has plenty of power and acceleration, but I gave up thrashing vehicles roughly 40 years ago. I haven't found a thing about it I don't like, but being raised in life having nothing you appreciate everything more. I think as a society we have lost that. It is very comfortable, easy to get in and out of without feeling like you're parachuting into Normandy, or climbing out of a manhole. To each there own certainly, but we do seem to niggle the details much too often rather than enjoy what we have. I'm thoroughly impressed, and I didn't have to fight the sales staff off with a baseball bat. The whole experience was low key and no pressure. I feel if I live long enough to wear this one out I'll go back and get another.

Thank you for your review! I am purchasing my new Subaru Crosstrek Sport this evening and your video helped me to learn more BEFORE I get to the dealership. The 2.5 Engine is what sold me, along with the sub-SUV style "not to big, not to small".

My wife needs a commuter car. I wanted something with a little ground clearance but small to drive in city settings. We test drove quite a few crossovers. I will be honest, I wanted to like the Bronco Sport, but it fell short in a few areas and she preferred the Crosstrek. I really like your review, very thorough and you give good impressions on it. We are ordering ours this week.

I’ve loved my 2019 premium crosstrek but i’m excited to get the 2022 sport in just a few months. The bigger 2.5L engine is definitely going to help me out here in Colorado. Out of everything you mentioned, i personally believe the absolute best part of this vehicle is the eyesight capabilities. i truly could not imagine going back to a car without subaru eyesight or another comparable system. Not only does the eyesight increase safety, but just makes long road trips or highway driving much easier and enjoyable.

I really wish they carried over the Sport model styling into the limited. I love the wheels and gunmetal trim of the sport, but want the power seats, directional LED headlights, and leather seats of the limited. In fact I could say this across the entire Subaru line; even the Outback’s Onyx edition. It just goes from “just right” to “gaudy” real quick.

@Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this I believe the Harmon Kardon premium audio system is only an option for the Limited trim level specifically (which mine has). I think there is an after-market Subaru dealer-installed audio upgrade using Rockford Fosgate speakers. I haven’t seen a comparison of the HK versus the RF systems, yet.

This 2.5NA is too little and too late. They should offer it with a 1.8T from the Levorg in Japan. For the money they are charging, it is pretty poor value as the Mazda CX-30 and Hyundai Kona 1.6T are offering more power, and a geared transmission at a lower price point. Oh, and is there going to be a fire sale now in the Crosstrek 2.0's????

I like to go camping in areas with unmaintained BLM roads so I need good AWD and ground clearance but don't like large cars or trucks so I was shopping the nicest small, capable SUV I could find. I was looking for the modern equivalent of my old Jeep Cherokee Limited. I skipped Jeep because of the horrible reliability issues since the FCA merger. I checked out Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Subaru, and Mazda CX-30 and CX-5 over the last year. I can't live with the hard to use, counter-intuitive infotainment systems in all but the Subaru. Why they complicate something you have to use while driving with controller knobs, and touch pads is beyond me, those systems are obviously dangerous. Both Mazdas also had very uncomfortable seat bottoms after a couple of hours (I'm glad I did long test drives). I agree the CX-30 looks classy inside but functionality suffers greatly for the looks. It's funny that the CX-30 has vents in the rear torture chamber (seat) and the Crosstrek doesn't for the adult sized rear seat. I didn't buy the Crosstrek last year because of the underpowered engine, but when the 2021 Limited 2.5 arrived with competent and competitive power I bought one. It has been a joy to drive for the last month and it doesn't seem like there is anything it can't handle. It was priced like the flawed CX-30 and did so many things better than the "luxury" brands that cost $15K to $20K more. It will definitely be better on unmaintained forest roads than any of that competition. I would like the Crosstrek even more with better steering feel and rear vents, can't have it all. Thanks for your excellent review, now please compare a Crosstrek Limited to the CX-30 Premium, beauty is more than skin deep.

For all of those complaining about the CVT if you maintain it and have inspections done at the recommended service intervals you won't have much problems with the newer in house built Subaru CVTs. Yes there were problem children out there over the years but the latter in house made Subaru CVTs are pretty solid. The key is maintenance as with anything when you own a vehicle If you put a regular automatic in the Crosstrek you would take a mpg hit which I am sure people would complain about. The CVT offsets the boxer 4s thirst for gas. As for a manual yes there are people who like them but they really don't sell. The demand isn't there to justify the production. Don't believe me? Look up the numbers of the amount of manuals that sold over the recent years. It isn't much. A turbo? Why? So folks can complain about lag? That is what would happen. Also power delivery on the Subie turbos isn't as fluid as a naturally aspirated mill. On the rear vents.... look under the front seats lol. As far as the usb acess goes Subie puts them under the armrest for a reason. The biggest is so they are less exposed to dirt & debris which if you owned a vehicle with exposed USB ports you will know over time they get loaded with debris. Also, when exposed they are more prone to getting kicked with a foot by a child, etc while something is plugged into them which can cause failure. There is a cutout in the armrest to thread longer cords through it to the back so. In the end the Crosstrek is a small awd people mover that can get folks through snowy weather well and to the trailhead, etc. It isn't a rockcrawler and if that is what you want buy a Jeep or a Bronco(although I would wait for a few years for Ford to work the bugs out.) Or better yet build one which I did years back with a Golden Eagle edition CJ with a 427 in it on Rockwell's.

I had the 1st gen Crosstrek and got rid of it after a year. Not my first Subaru so I knew I wasn't getting a rocket ship but engine performance was lackluster. Hopefully the 2.5 will improve on that. But that's not the reason I sold it...the road noise was horrible. The handsfree mic as subpar and people said I sounded like I had my windows open. I felt like I was in my mid-90's legacy wagon not a 2014 vehicle. Hopefully this updated version is better.

Corolla feels a little bit more powerful actually, mostly thanks to the far superior CVT the Corolla has. If you don't need the Crosstrek's ground clearance, AWD or extra space, I'd definitely get the Corolla over it.

This car has a unique size that seems enviable compared to standard SUVs that are so common. Subarus are also a little different than other cars. They seem to be relatively attractively priced. Did you get to show this new one to your parents or parents n law? Why didn't you and Beth do an interior video together on this vehicle? We enjoy her collaboration and the discussion between you. I am not a big fan of the colored yellow metal bar on the steering wheel either. Visability is important...thank you for commenting on that. I grew up in western Pennsylvania, so great to see the scenery. There is something comfortable appearing about this vehicle, its size, its cost, etc; seems versatile. Where is that nice view at 25:35? And where is the bridge at 28:19? Nice review, thumbs up of course. ...I know you and others like Mazda interiors, but I find them to be a pseudo-luxury and it seems to a wannabe in that respect. The new Crosstrek will do well among members of the Subaru cult. (Don't get me wrong, it's a very polite and mostly friendly cult until a Subaru is criticized. :) ) For others, the improved performance of the 2.5L boxer engine may not be as tempting. Specifically, the KIA Seltos is a formidable rival. The Seltos is about 4.5" less in length than the Crosstrek (172" vs 176,5"). The KIA and Subarus offer essentially the same interior space for passengers. In terms of cargo space, however, the Seltos offers significantly more room. Behind the second row the Seltos has 26.6 cubic ft; the Crosstrek provides 20.8 cf. Total cargo space behind the first row is 62.8 cubic ft in the Seltos versus 55.3 cf in the Crosstrek. (An airline carry on bag is about 1.8 cubic ft.) In terms of performance the Seltos offers Hyundai's 1.6L turbo, roughly comparable to the HP and torque of the Crosstrek's 2.5L NA boxer. But while the numbers are close, the Seltos develops its 195 ft lbs of torque @1500 rpm compared to the Crosstrek's 175 ft lbs @ 4400 rpm. That difference will make a significant difference in quicker performance from the Seltos. The Seltos 7 speed dual clutch transmission vs the Crosstrek's CVT adds to that difference. There's no question that the Crosstrek's new engine is a significant upgrade compared to the last generation. But the Seltos is a new player in the subcompact crossover category that represents significantly more challenging competition.

Again you do make a good point they it is too Aggressive for many crossovers (but they just test it on those terrains to fuel the viewers off road curiosity), but yeah the terrain was a little too much for the Subaru but it did pretty good though. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqaYxMGOhrfHYpM.html

The reason many people state for tfl not getting Subarus is because it couldn't perform on that cliffhanger test, but the supposed real reason is they damaged the car during that test. The fact they have never taken any other crossovers like the Outback up there should say something more than it simply could not make it. The Jeep Cherokee can match or exceed Subaru's awd capability yet they never took one of those up there.
