Update: After 3 years of ownership, literally nothing has changed. I've had zero issues since this review. I just do the maintenance, treat the fuel with Stanadyne and drive the truck. It has been great. ALSO, if you work at GM or know who designed the cup holders in the doors of the current generation Colorado/Canyon, PUNCH THEM IN THE THROAT... When I think about the number of people that had to say "Yes" to that design for it to happen it really pisses me off haha. Thanks for watching guys. What do you guys think of the truck? Dude ur channel is ok but don't start comparing ur Colorado to any F150 Raptor in any way. Pls. Anyway, my new Ranger XLT FX4 is far superior inside to Colorado...both are great trucks but Ranger had me w/ sporty plush ride an spectacular powertrain! Can't beat Ford truck reliability either.

Canyon AT diesel. I bought it to tow a Black Series HQ15 camper just over 5k lbs. Last camping trip was over 100 miles over mountains (Phoenix to Payson area) - 13 mpg there and 16 mpg home. When we explored the area, without the trailer,we drove over 100 miles and got 35 mpg. I was shocked. Love this truck.

Love my 2017 diesel Colorado! You hit all the topics spot on. I pull a Wildwood FSX190RT Toyhauler with a 48v golf cart inside plus a 300lb smoker and all our camping gear. No issues getting up to highway speeds and maintain 60 - 65mph easily.

I’ve always heard horsepower sets you back in the seat, torque keeps you there.

I bought my GMC Canyon Denali Duramax used 8 months ago or so and I simply love this truck. I've driven it about 5k miles and it gets about 25 mpg around town and has been as high as 35 on the highway. When I was shopping for it at GMC or Chevy dealerships, they were hard to find. Funny, the GM dealerships all had at least one if not 3 or 4 used Ford Rangers with very low miles I told them thanks, but no thanks. My truck is as solid as a vehicle can be and drives exceptionally well on the highway. What I've noticed in the area of power is how easily it climbs hills. It shifts into 6th gear and doesn't downshift as a gas engine might. The engine has 369 foot pounds of torque which is about the same as a 350 Chevy small block V8...go figure. I tow a 21 foot RV trailer with it and it does so without straining and fuel mileage is exceptional at 9 to as much as 20 depending on the terrain and speed. My last diesel truck was a Chevy LUV in about 1980, but it didn't like to start in Wyoming winters. If you're in doubt, let me ease your mind...just get one, you won't be sorry.

I use it mostly as a daily driver, use to ride an hour one way for work thankfully that part of my life is over. But I’d trust it on a cross country trip it’s been great, no problems only complaints is the usual. The maintenance costs a little more being a diesel and I wish it was a full size. It tows good for a mid-sized too and the gas mileage has stood the test of time

@@jonnyg9330 I enjoy the ride of mine that is something I forgot about the 2.8 duramax. So I haven’t dealt with it much bc I live mostly on flat land but if you you get going down steep hills (I have trouble when I travel to Boone to watch app state football games) the engine and or trans won’t downshift I guess? I asked about it and Chevy supposedly built that feature in to help stay in a higher gear for if you come back up a hill mainly for towing I think but it is annoying when your engine is reving loud at about 3,500 rpms and it takes a minute to downshift. My truck usually never revs above 2,500 on normal circumstances

I picked up an '18 Canyon SLE with the Duramax back in February. Used, but with such low mileage (13k) that it might as well have been new. Already racked up about the same mileage you have now. I'm in the same boat, I think it's a phenomenal truck / engine combination. Bought it to replace a '13 CR-V, while also adding the ability to tow. Despite having effectively the same horsepower (181 vs 185) and about 800 pounds more weight, the Canyon feels quicker in almost every way because of all that torque off the line. It's also the nicest towing vehicle I've ever driven, which I suppose should be expected with the extra-long wheelbase on the longbed. The fact that it does all that, and based on the last ~9k of driving, only does about 1MPG worse when doing the same day-to-day tasks that our CR-V did, is just amazing.

Just a small thing to correct if it helps. I live in Ontario Canada and quite often through the winter it goes below the DEF freezing temperature. I have 80 000kms on a Diesel Titan and can tell you that the DEF definitely freezes each and every day. The DEF heater doesn't prevent that but rather it melts it quickly once you start it. Using the block heater does not keep the DEF heater on either (for those who may be wondering). The reason they chose the ratio of DEF that they do when they mix it is freezing and thawing does not degrade it. The only issue that I have seen happen (Other than failed sensors and the odd injector on other people's trucks) is that if you overfill your reservoir and it freezes, it may come out the top when frozen and is corrosive to your paint when thawing. I know this comment is a while ago but I always keep my DEF under a 1/4 in the winter due to freezing and have never had an issue

Interesting review. I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD. It has the same basic 2.8L engine found in the Colorado (without all the DEF and DPF emission gear that came in MY2007). I've driven diesel Colorados and they perform almost identically to my CRD. The 2020 Colorado owner's manual shows a 150K mile replacement interval for the timing belt. You will taking off a lot more than the radiator to replace it. It's also a good time to replace the water pump, idler pulleys, and serpentine belt. I had that done a while back on my CRD. Total parts and labor were just short of $1,500 for all of that. That chews up a chunk of fuel economy savings. For the record, I've been around diesels for almost 50 years, everything from automotive diesels to railroad locomotives. And, yes, the whole DPF/DEF emission situation is a nightmare. I currently have a 6.7 SuperDuty down with a NOx sensor gone bad--at 26,000 miles on the sensor. If you have to buy one out of warranty, they cost about $350, just for the part. And they go bad fairly often.

We found a used 2017 Z71 Duramax. It has been awesome! We have an F350 for work, but our little truck is a game changer for us. We boomerang from the Gulf Coast of TX to central MO every few weeks and we get 30-36mpg highway. Handles the hills and curves beautifully! You definitely hit the nail in the head with the interior. Could use a little finesse and upscale a bit. We are so happy to have found this needle in a haystack. Thanks for the review and keep enjoying!

I get those numbers as well ocassionally 36, but 27 to 31 is normal.

I have a 2016 Colorado. I agree with the assessment of the seat. I purchased a set of Wet Okole seat covers to add padding. It helped and really didn’t negatively affect the heated seats.

when i first got my 2017 canyon diesel, I had to have the heater changed for the def fluid tank. very happy so far. Almost 70000 kms. will be changing the transmission fluid soon to fully synthetic

Hey RG. Thanks for the update on your truck. I subscribed to you about 2 years ago when I started doing research on the Gas and Diesel. You make valid points between the 2 options and I went back and forth myself comparing the fuel costs, maintenance and the ROI over 5 years of ownership. Not taking in account of the resale which is an unknown. It would have taken 5 years based on the miles I put on to break even which wasn't too bad, But I ultimately went with the Gas engine because of a couple of points that you mentioned. I also snowmobile during the winter and we're in the middle of nowhere in the mountains and have limited access to services. I didn't want to take a chance with a failed DEF pump and heater and have to resort calling a flatbed to get the truck and trailer out of the woods. Ultimately I purchased a used 2018 Highly Optioned Gas LT (HD Towing Package, Heated Seats, Mirrors Etc) . I'm happy with the truck so far. No problems. BTW Nice Indy 500. Take a look at my channel. It's mostly snowmobiling, and I have a lot of content on older Polaris Wedge sleds.

That old indy ran great. I sold it this past winter. We just don't get enough snow to really use it here. Also I didn't have anyone else to ride with. Riding 30 or 40 miles in one direction in 10 degree weather by yourself on a 30 year old snowmobile takes more balls than what I have haha. I wasnt trying to turn into Bear Grills because of my broken down snowmobile haha. Thanks for watching. I'll check out your videos for sure.

My 2018 ZR2 diesel has been problem free. I'm a hair over 40K miles now. I've wheeled it hard and it's always done great. The timing belt on the 2.8 Durmax doesn't need changing until 150K miles.

I love my Colorado diesel. I have 90000 miles on it. I have had no issues and it was my understanding that with 8 speed transmission swapping to Mobil 1 LVHP was the fix, so I swapped in my 6 speed also. I think my 6 speed feels even better than it did with Dexron 6. I have 32” tires and see 30 mpg from time to time. I think you made a smart purchase. Happy travels!

I have 2019 Canyon Denali and with only 20,000km experienced the Chevy transmission shudder. The dealership change to the Mobile 1 LVHP The truck defiantly rides better, even feels like mor hp. No other issues

I have 80k miles with zero issues on my 2018 zr2 diesel. I have owned many different pickups and this one is one of the best.

I own a 2018 ZR2 diesel and I love it. I get around 28mpg highway and 22 mpg towing 3k lbs.

2020 diesel ZR2 in Central Texas, 6 months old and 6500 miles, zero issues, of course, 28 degrees is about as cold as it gets here! Getting 20-22 mpg in the city with slightly more frequent regens than once per fill-up but doesn't seem to be a big deal. Planning to add and oil catch can and tune after my one free dealer oil change at around 7500 miles.

I have a V6 Colorado 2016 Z71. I bought Katskin leather seat covers and had them installed. The seats are great and comfortable and also easier to keep clean. I love my Colorado and have had zero issues with it other than regular maintenance.

I drive mostly highway & average 28 mpg. I drive 74 on open freeways. Loaded drive 65 & less. Loaded for camping, maybe 5500 lbs, I get 14 mpg. I'm getting older & try not to brake while towing. I pull a Rpod 195 travel trailer. My truck handles the trailer just good enough. No better or worse. I installed air bags & led low beam headlights. With luck, when I age out, I hope to get the most dollars ever for my green 2018 Colorado diesel. ( It will be up against used ev trucks with range issues. LOL)

Appreciate the video, good job. Owned 3 Nissan diesels in the 1980’s, a maxima straight 6, 2 pickups with straight 4’s, all normally aspirated. All made it to 150k plus before rusting out in NY winters. Moved onto full size pick ups but could never justify the added cost for any of the big 3’s diesels considering what I use the truck for. My life long propensity for GM went south after the ‘08 buy out. The ever increasing levels of EPA related smog controls further eroded my enthusiasm for a diesel truck. In early ‘18, we vacationed in Costa RIca and rented 2 new Chevy Trail Blazers (the model that was discontinued in the US) that were sporting the 2.8 duramax. These were full frame, 3 rows of seats (all filled) vehicles. We pushed them mercilessly through the mountains of Central America. They were amazing, complete with an engine brake! Never had to refuel them until we turned them in. When I learned they were putting them in the Colorado / canyon, I started thinking about repenting of my attitude towards GM as I look to replace my ‘03 super duty with a mid size truck. I heard later that GM May be walking away from this engine and selling the factory in Thailand that produces them. I will be interested to hear about these trucks as they gather more miles. Thanks.

That diesel is a Fiat design. From the company that owns Ram. Stelentis, something like that. $1500 to change timing ar 150k miles belt, eats up any fuel savings.

Very helpful, always trying to learn more about smaller trucks maintenance to look out for and possible issues after so many miles. I grew up on a farm in Northwestern PA 40 mins below Lake Erie near state line. Stressing over how to put my 2006 Mustang away for winter and all the things to do to ensure it stays put ok and starts up in the Spring. In the meantime I’m looking just looking and researching all about Chevy Colorado’s like the z71 Trail boss or this gas or dieseal version of the truck in this video.

First, I want to thank you for the videos that you post! You have helped me do maintenance on my 2019 Chevy Colorado Z71 Duramax. In the video at 6:25 min mark, you said that you have "dead pedal". You try to accelerate while at 40 mph but do not get any response. I have replaced my OEM air intake filter and box with the S & B cold air intake and it has made a world of a difference in the "dead pedal" and a little better fuel economy. Now that being said, it does add to road noise while driving. You can hear the air whooshing in and the turbo blow off but I think it was a good trade off. Just something, I have discovered. Finally, the cold air intake install is easy and S & B said that it will not void your manufacturer warranty and they will help fight it if the dealership says otherwise.

I never said I have a dead pedal. I said the truck lacks power at highway speeds and high RPM. I don't buy into MOST cold air intakes. Why? The stock airbox setup on this truck has an air inlet temperature within 2 degrees of ambient. Running down the highway I've had the ambient air temperature and the inlet air temperature be the exact same. So how is a "cold air intake" going to give me colder air when ambient air is the same temperature? Now when you get into modified engines that move more air, the flow rate of the stock airbox could become a restriction. But if your engine only moves 300 CFM and a stock airbox flows 350 CFM. The stock airbox isn't a restriction. Something else is limiting the engine to 300CFM in that example. These "cold air intake" companies claim HP gains because they do all of their testing on a dyno with the hood of the vehicle open. The stock setup draws air from the fender. A lot of "cold air" kits have an open filter element with no air box just a heat shield. So unless you are doing highway pulls with your hood open I highly doubt that intake is doing much of anything for you. Now the "dead" pedal or the lethargic response from a standstill is the factory throttle programming. If you quickly stab the throttle from a stop it takes a second for the truck to move. The factory does this to keep a giant puff of soot from going into the DPF when you stab the throttle with no boost present. Tuning can removing this delay but you WANT this delay to preserve your DPF. Three years with my gas Ext Cab, one of the first off the line, love it. Three mods that made a huge difference, gears (4.10's), Timbren off road bump stops and a Trifecta tune. You're right abut the rear window. Door pockets hold small fire extinguishers.

I had a wreck (not my fault) which totaled my old '03 Dodge Dakota. Little bitty bare minimum 5 speed manual. Found a 2016 model (Diesel) at a steal with 166,000 miles. So I bought it. No complaints yet! Needless to say, going fr my dodge to the Chevy has been quite an adjustment with all the extra bells and whistles. Also love the fact you did this video while wearing a Ford shirt 😂

I enjoyed your review! I have a 2018 Canyon with the 2.8L Duramini. I love it! In the interest of full disclosure, it’s a clone of my 2017 that I ordered new, but which suffered a catastrophic engine failure at just over 10,000 miles. GMC treated me in epic fashion, and the end result was a 2018 replacement, ordered from the same sheet as the first one. This “new” one is nearly three years old now, and pushing 47,000 miles. One recall to reprogram the emissions system calibration, but zero issues. I moved over the mountains with it, pulling maximum loads in three trips. It’s no racing truck, but it did just fine. Pulling maximum GCVWR, over the Cascade Mts, netted about 13mpg each time. Running solo, year round average is 26+. Frequently hits mid 30s, even 40 occasionally. Honest results. This is a 4WD crew cab, long bed with canopy. It’s a fantastic compromise between a half ton truck and my ex, a 2011 TDI Jetta. #NOregrets #GMCDenali

If that is what you want and it works for you, great! I have driven the diesel version of that truck and you are right, at 45 mph and above if you stomp it that engine makes more noise than forward motion. I have 2 diesel trucks and I can tell you that given the maintenance on a diesel (I have 2 6.0 liter Fords) fuel filter kits and 4 gallons of oil per change plus you didn't mention you pay more for the fuel, a person doesn't save anything. If that engine is interference you better follow the recommended service interval for timing belt replacement; don't ask me how I know that. Also, you didn't mention that there is no option for headlight upgrades to LED. As far as torque, a diesel usually has max torque somewhere north of idle; right down there where you can use it. I would have thought the towing capacity would have been greater that 5,000 lbs. My Grand Marquis has that much capacity. Great video!

The DEF freezing is my main issue with a diesel. We get -30 degs here in N Central MT often.

Dude I had a v6 zr2 and 17-18 was the norm on the highway. Driving at 55 I could get 20 but the aerodynamics weren’t made for mpg at 70-75. Power was fine. Ride was fine. Spent most of the time in 7th gear at higher speeds on hillier interstates. Before that had a 2wd v6 colorado and mid 20s highway. Your mpg is great! Thanks for posting.

I have a 2019 z71 looks just like your dads. I love it has 23,000 miles and lifetime mileage is 27.0 . I have the leather interior and it's been very comfortable for my 6'1" almost 300lb body. Just hauled a 2500lb load of broken concrete to the dump on my single axle trailer and still got 25.6mpg..

Update to October 2020. Took a trip to NJ for work (training) averaged 38mpg going across I80 in northern Pennsylvania. Last week took my John Deere on a 14' trailer to Jamestown NY and back . Averaged 18.5 and keep up to the traffic on hills no problem.

I My 2018 ZR2 has 48,000, so far the rear end went out at 42,000, chevy charged me $179.00 to inspect which I'm trying to recover from Chevy customer service, which is a challenge, the only other thing was a plugged injector for DEF, the first 10,000 miles ! But I do love the truck ! for the record I get around 22 MPG around town and on the highway, as for doing above 27 MPG only once or twice !!!

I've had my 2016 2.8 for a while now, driven it 67,000 miles and its given me no problems with regular maintenance

@@rustracekars1939 2.8 it was an early predecessor to the 2.8 Duramax. GM bought the design from VM Motori who built the 2.8 for the liberty. GM updated the engine slightly with a different turbo, revised port shape for the head, and modern pollution controls. They are extremely similar engines.

Good review. My only caveat is that, as I understand the model, the Colorado is a “lesser” model in the GM line, thus the interior issues you mention are to be expected. Also, the door pockets were meant to be bottle holders.

The ext cab 4wd Colorado that my work has feels like a econo car based on the interior quality and how it drives. Easy to drive, some tire noise for sure but its a great mid size little truck. Has never let us down or had any problems honestly. Considering getting a 4 door diesel to add to my collection and for towing my side by sides. It would be nice to not have to lug around my full size 4 door 8'bed truck Silverado when we go camping. Sometimes the parking is tight and the trailer doesn't help. Would be nice to have a smaller tow rig and daily for the wife.

Ram 2500 6.7 Cummins owner. Never had an issue with DEF in winter. I’m in Canada. Maintenance does cost more but extremely reliable and resale value is amazing.

I have a 2018 ZR1 with the Diesel. So far with 25,000 miles on it I'm happy. I've used it to haul racing engines around and have made a cross country trip hauling a car trailer cross country. From So. Cal to Texas I had a Cobra on it. From Texas to Tampa Florida it was empty, then from Tampa back to So. California I had a 71 Ford Torino Big Block car on it. Averaged 19.1 MPG on that trip. However my average MPG on everyday driving has averaged 27.7 MPG. Recommendation: get the Bose stereo option, the standard radio sucks.

Yup, here in northern Alberta, DEF tanks on tractors, semis and pickups are always freezing. It's probably the main incentive to get deletes- better mileage is nice too.

I have a 2016 Colorado LT Diesel. I use it for a service business. Currently at 130,000 miles. Great mileage 28 mpg all around driving. 16mpg towing a 7x12 dual axle trailer for moving pianos 1 or 2 days a week. Solid truck...emission sensors can be fussy. For my needs nothing in a midsize Truck can even compete with it...

We had a 2016 Duramax CO. Loved it. It was an LT 4wd crew cab long bed. Towed great for its size, fit up to 37mpg in the highway. I think if they remapped the transmission to short shift, I think the acceleration numbers would be considerably better. You are right it falls off as the rpms climb. We lived in the UP of Michigan, never had an issue with bitter cold weather. Cold started great, never plugged it in. Had to replace it because we had a 3rd little one and couldn’t get 3 kids seat across the back. I like the Silverado but really miss the all around goodness if that Colorado. Awesome road trip, gear hauling machine. Only issues we had was related to my wife using it for a short 2 mile commute to work and it couldn’t regen... learned early in it needs to be driven at least 10 miles once a week or so so it can do the regen. Wish they had something on the display that tells you when it wants to regen.

I agree about the regens. I wish you could force them manually. For example: If I know I'm getting on the highway for a half hour and I'm at 85-90% on my DPF soot level I should have the option to force it so, the truck can go through a complete regen cycle without interruption. Instead the truck starts up a regen right when I'm about to shut it down.

Repair Geek yeah and the fact it will just go into limp mode after so many unknown attempts requiring a dealership to force it to regen. That was beyond annoying

I got a 2016 Ram ecodiesel. It's got 112000km on it and it's fantastic. I use it to tow a camper trailer. I've had no issues with it either. My work truck is a 2009 Canyon single cab inline 5 cylinder and it's been a great truck too. Also loom into dpf remedy or ferox fuel tabs. They will save your dpf filter and reduce your regens frequency.

Solid everyman's video. I love diesels. Right now have a 2001 F250 7.3 but so sick and tired and of the constant dealing with cold, injectors, and other attentive problems when you work a truck at or above capacity. Got a cyber truck on order and when that comes in about 3 years I'll see how that goes.

I'm on my second S10 2.8 Diesel (Brazilian Colorado) totally worry free for more than 120.000 miles!

I have the Colorado LT 4x4 crew cab standard bed with the Duramax 2.8 L Diesel. Came with leather interior. I haul 2,000 pounds of Indian River Rock at a time versus the rated payload of 1,750 total weight. The suspension handles the load fine & the diesel asks if that's all I can put in the bed .. the engine is awesome. The leather seats are very comfortable. I have made several 700+ mile trips feeling comfortable and getting as much as 35 MPG. If I drive 80 MPH I still get above 30. It is also way easier to handle in traffic and parking than a full size truck. Ford 150s & GM/Chevy/Dodge 1500s feel light to me in the rear unless loaded. This midsize truck feels very solid. I like the ride much better than those trucks.

thing ive seen about the diesel is the biggest limit for it is cooling, that's most of what caps the towing capacity

The Colorado with the gold emblem you showed, is a better looking truck than the other one.. Your dad sounds like a great guy..,

Great review. I'm thinking of the Colorado but wasn't sure between gas and Diesel. I do live in Canada and the freezing would be an issue in the winter time. The dealership does cell it here so they must have that issue resolve hopefully. The gas with the automatic transmission does concern me still. I would probably try to see if I could get a standard with the V6. If it doesn't work out well maybe the Ridgeline would do the job

Thanks for the review and update. I've been using Pennzoil in my truck since I bought it but I've since switched to the Castrol that's Dexos 2 and I feel oil consumption is much better. I have a '19 and I'm about to hit 21k. My ownership experience has much been like yours but I didn't have any major issues (knock on wood).

I have done my first oil Chan’s didn’t use any oil is this normal I used the same oil it is the only oil I could find that said it was made for a diesel it was dexos2 and low ash 5w 30

I listen to this channel because I'm interested in the Colorado that has the Isuzu diesel in it wanted to see how you guys liked it.

I own a ‘16 GMC Canyon Diesel. I love it.... I to didn’t need a full size truck. I pull a 1K Lb trailer with my 1500 Lb RAZR. It tows it wonderfully. I like the exhaust brake also.

I agree. I dont understand why everyone on the internet thinks your truck needs to be able to pull a building over. A Z71 will pull 7700 lbs. Thats what a 5.4L Supercrew F150 pulled 20 years ago 🤷‍♂️.

Nobody is safely towing 7700 lbs with this truck. That’s honestly too much for a 1/2 ton Silverado too if done daily. You need a heavy duty truck to take that kind of abuse daily. I wouldn’t tow more than 4000 lbs with a small truck like this.

Could’ve spit my coffee out when you mentioned “Don’t suggest I get an F150, had problems with mine”. I haven’t forgotten brand new F150 1988, 3 leaks, 3 alignments, 2 brake jobs, second oil burning 302 V8, gas tank sender, dash rheostat, and more in just one year, 14,000 miles. 89 Blazer 4.3 fixed all problems, 80,000 miles and a new ABS and adjust a wind seal, that was it. Zero oil consumption. 2003 had new VW Jetta wagon in turbo-diesel flavor. Loved it. Easy average 48 mpg’s. The diesel option I think was just $1000 more, drove it 78k miles and was almost ludicrously low depreciation. You’re right on the low rpm torque. My TDI VW to pass, even down to 50 mph, it didn’t seem worth the effort to shift out of 5th gear to 4th, same amount of reasonable or adequate turbo time required to pass. It just ran too close to ground and hit road debris that other sedans cleared (hole in oil pan one hit in the dark) and the cabin heater was tepid up north. Below zero, 20 miles to warm interior up. You guys did not mention if you get sluggish cabin heat in depth of winter, so maybe not. I loved the bit of diesel clatter and only filled fuel tank about every 3 1/2 weeks. One might start feeling “smug” cruising past many fuel stations and noting often how many thirsty vehicles were pouring big money in their tanks. I imagine electric car and truck drivers might feel that way in the rather near future. Those who can afford them. Can’t say I actually want a computer screen on wheels. Altho the lack of things and fluids to maintain looks tempting, just drive, wash, vacuum, tires and brakes. “They” need to come up with environmentally good way of recycling those huge batteries yet, unless I missed some new news on that front. Have a 2019 Z71 and I love it when I have it, It's been in the dealership for 5 months now waiting on a fuel pressure sensor that GM says it cant get from overseas. When I did get to drive got 36+ MPG on Hwy and 25+ in city with ease. With less than 10K on the clock

I have a 2016 z71, and I love it. It’s as quiet as a tomb. I hear NOTHING. No noise from the road, no noise from off roading, nada.

Im looking at buying my 1st truck. Been loving the zr2 but do wish it had more going on in the interior.

I got a 2018 ZR2 with the 2.8 Babymax. Only issues I've had was the def tank heater wasn't plugged in from the factory. Also the actual def pump failed. Otherwise haven't had any issues, and I tow a trailer with a sxs and quad on it more frequently as of recently. It tows it great! roughly 3300-3800lb's And im deleting the truck this summer. Should increase my milage quite a bit, and increase the longevity of the motor.

Well, you've convinced me. If I trade up for a new Colorado, it will be the basic 2-door, W.T. version with the 4-cylinder and 6-speed auto and maybe the convenience pkg with cruise. It's a pick-up, eh? Every-time I drive my 2003 Mazda B2300 with the 5-spped auto, a/c, & crank-up windows, I just smile, because, it's just a pick-up and it hauls firewood, cement bag, pavers, gravel bags or 12 ft James Hardie cement lap-siding boards on the overhead rack (not all at once of course, as the payload is 800, so I know it's safer not to go too many hundreds over that). Thanks for the insight about the Colorado gas V-6 and the diesel engine(s)... good info.

Bought a new 2016 LT with a Duramax. I still love it. Perfect little truck after 5 years. I had an issue with the DEF pump that was covered under warranty but other than that it’s been perfect. I literally get 25.7 MPG city and I’ve gotten 39.3 MPG for a lengthy trip on the highway (this was winter so not running AC). I hate that diesel is so expensive now but I can 450+ miles on a tank. I’m ready to get a new truck but I hate to get rid of this truck!

What truck are you thinking of replacing it with?

I "hear", the baby max deleted with a mild tune , say from GDE, results in safe and much improved performance over factory settings. Have had Fantastic hunting trips where refueling is the least of your issues as the mpg is fantastic and the lack of DEF is pure smiles. This truck is SEVERELY derated from factory and highly underated by the general public.

Thank you for the frank and honest review. ... I do however wish that you could get a hold of a Ford Ranger to do a comparison test, ... that would be nice ;-)

My 17’ was a royal POS! Traded it after only 1 year of ownership, never looked back and def never going back to this model again. Glad to hear yours is doing good tho man.

Wearing a ford shirt while driving a ZR2, HERETIC!! Have a 19 diesel ZR2 myself, so far I have had the alternator issue which was replaced under warranty and a fan clutch issue which was replaced under warranty as well. no problems since. So far its a good truck. Had some issues with the android auto but sorted those out myself as it was an issue with the app itself. at 10,500 miles now and it is working just fine. I am in Florida so I don't think that DEF issue will be mine. I have found the fuel economy sweet spot for this combo to be right at 52 mph and 1720 rpm, kept in that range on back roads I will regularly see 43 mpg. At 70 on the highway I see 25 to 27 mpg average, hills will cost 5 and bring it to 22 or so. Thus far I like it.

I have a Canyon with the 2.8. 40K miles so far, no issues. The computer had to be reprogrammed twice at the dealer but I did not see any differences. It averages 26.5mpg in Southern California traffic with an average 19mph. I think it is a good engine. By the way, the owner's manual says 150K miles between timing belt changes. Where did you get the 100K miles from? Just to be conservative?

Came for the review, stayed for the Cavalier comparison.

2017 Z71 here, bought it with 27K miles on it, now has 54K ....My two cents! First get a decent trans cooler... 6 speed auto trans from factory is running at 200 plus temp. now my temps normal 160-180. second let it breathe ! get cool air intake with big ass air filter, n o your MPG wont suffer if you drive normal, but when you need it, the extra air lets the engine breathe a few more horsey, you will notice the response in the upper RPM when the turbo spools up quicker. lastly get a decent oil can for the bypass valve. you would be amazed at the gunk it catches and you dont want that going back to the hot end of turbo.

There are two block off plates in front of the trans cooler which can be easily removed, do that to solve the hot trans issue. They are put there for cold environments and made removable for hot areas.

Great video,love my 2017 GMC canyon diesel.I agree about the interior,I don't know why GM always has bland interiors in their trucks.

It isn't just the trucks. It's all GMs. With the exception of the C8 they are a generation behind interior wise across the entire product line.
