This episode covers the Suez Crisis of 1956 which came about after Egypt, under Gamal Abdel Nasser, nationalised the Suez Canal. Britain, France and Israel then colluded to invade Egypt and retake the canal. Militarily this went well, but politically the crisis cost the allied powers far too much and so they withdrew in what was frankly a humiliating climbdown. Also it's the point in which Britain was officially no longer a superpower. So pretty important.
Recommended books:
The Arabs: A History by Eugene Rogan. A fantastic book that covers Arabic history from the Mamluk Sultanate to the modern day. Extremely detailed and pretty ambitious, too although be aware the author makes no attempt to hide their political biases.
Postwar: A History of Europe since 1945 by Tony Judt. Obviously this book only really tackles Suez from the perspective of the Europeans but does a great job in doing so. THE book for Cold War Europe.

Nah. That's not the worst. If you want to talk about humiliating failure, the "Mexican Expedition" in the late 19th century is ten times worst. The French backing some Austrian Hasburg prince (who knows why ? Marie-Antoinette ?), to take the throne of Mexico. Ended in a (total) disaster ! Also an honorable mention : the US running away 2 years ago from Kabul, chased down by goatkeepers.

Israel for example has excellent diplomatic relations with say the USA, but the USA would never share nuclear weapons secrets with Israel (in fact, president Kennedy was adamant that Israel cease all nuclear weapons development and were it not for his assassination, Israel and the USA would have run into a major confrontation over Israel’s nuclear programme). The intense level of cooeration between France and Israel with respect to the development of nuclear weapons in the 1950s and early 60s rises far higher than what most countries with good diplomatic relations would be willing to share with each other. Once small example of this is that Israeli scientists were the only foreign nationals who were allowed to roam freely at Marcoule. Anyway, Israel’s cooperation with France during the Suez Crisis was one of the things which facilitated the two countries’ cooperation in the nuclear weapons development field rising to the level it did.

The Jordanian army was literally led mainly by British officers, the RAF conducted almost daily reconnaissance missions against Israel. Israel shot down RAF planes that were about to attack Israel directly. The relations were very hostile and there was even a direct confrontation. And for being honest, why the heck would Britain ever perfer the interests of some 600,000 people, most of whom poor refugees in a very poor and small country with no resources, on the expense of good relations with many strong and large countries containing hundreds of millions of people, massive land areas and plenty of resources (Obviously oil one of the most important)? The answer? They never did. Not to mention that the Jews literally fought the British for decades for them to leave, and hundreds of thousands of refugees were at the time held hostage by the British internment camps (mainly in Cyprus). Don't forget that Israel was socialist and the only actual assistance it received at the time (aside from Jews world-wide), was a small arm delivery from Czechoslovakia (which of course was a Soviet puppet-state). You can even open Google and simply search "Arab-Israeli war" ot "UK-Israel historical relations" to see how incredibly wrong what you wrote is.

For Britain, the Suez crisis was a disaster? It was one of the best things that could have happened to Britain because it brought the politicians to their senses. The new Prime Minister Macmillan set about dismantling Britain's worldwide military commitments and its pointless Empire. Britain actually had three different types of nuclear bomber in service, half a dozen aircraft carriers and conscript army equipped with obsolescent weaponry left over from WW2. The remaining Empire which Britain's leading historian Correlli Barnett described as “A useless ragbag of territory” and “A strategic, political and economic liability” was unloaded in less than 10 years. They got out of Africa so fast that in most places they cheated the rising political class out of their obligatory war of independence. It was a case of - “Go home, white man!” To which the answer was “Fine, would in two years be soon enough?” Getting rid of all these freed up money to tackle the appalling housing conditions in British cities. The construction industry in the 1960s was booming and as a trainee surveyor I could get work just about anywhere. By the 1950s Germany freed from costs of its own defence was making good the damage to its cities. No real start was made on rebuilding Britain's bombed cities until the early 1960s full 15 years after the war. I can remember as a very small child travelling through the centre of Liverpool on a tram and repeatedly asking my father, “Where are the houses?” I could not understand why there were vast areas with no buildings just derelict bomb sites. As a schoolboy in 1956 endless experts appeared on television saying the canal was absolutely vital to Britain because 90% of its oil passed through it. Without it oil would have to go round the Cape and that would require tankers of 50,000t(?) to be economic. Not only that, there were only three shipyards in the world who could build them that size. When the canal was closed in the 1970s tankers of 200,000 t + were built and guess what? It was actually cheaper to send them round the Cape! I have had a very cynical view of expert opinion ever since. There are times when, despite the initial humiliation it is actually a good thing to lose a war and this was one of them.

The Germans, with a clean slate and meritocracy controlling advancement,in modernising industries, had maade rapid inroads to their competitiveness,, versus Britain, because Britain wwas held back by the useless aristocracy(it still is). But this cut through tthe bs, that britain still neededd to be a world poower, 10 years too late, but at least it happened here and not laater. Look at moddernising industrries back at the Second World War stage, Brittain's industries were successful and strong, e.g.: Britain was dominant in its diversity in the car industry. Thank you for posting this I am half American and half Egyptian I have never lived in Egypt and I am still learning Arabic, but the other day I watched an Egyptian film about President Gamal Abdel Nasser with my father my dad is Egyptian, and I knew nothing about the history or the Nationalization of the Suez canal and was very confused by the film now after watching this video, the film makes more sense to me now and I have a better understanding of the history.
