The 1934 Ford "Beautiful" Gets A New Exhuast!! - Almost Road Worthy!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe "Beautiful" is in desperate need of a new exhaust system. The current piping is very thin and the muffler was once home to a mouse or two. Matt also noticed the exhaust before the muffler is 2" and leaves the muffler at 1.5". Since we are removing all the old piping Matt decided to run a full 2" system the full length of the car. After some help with the pipe bending from J&H Automotive, Matt makes quick work of the install and even fabricated stock appearing clamps and hangers. It's time to take "Beautiful" on its first real test drive!!

Rings are stuck. Had an old lawnmower did the same thing used marvel on it and about the forth time cutting the grass it stopped smoking and runs and starts on first try. Great mower it’s one of those old flip top start where you wind up the starter and push the button and the spring spins the motor

Matt & Mike, I love the stance, the exhaust is just a bit too loud for me but that could be due to the fact that I am in the "Old Codger" phase of life lol. Matt you do nice work, the old lady that owned it would be happy to see the care that you and Mike are giving her car.😎

She sounds awesome , Matt ! I've seen engines that sat for long periods of time , smoke like that because the rings set-up in the grooves . It smoked pretty good going to the gas station . But I noticed it smoked a lot less going back home . The rings will free up as you run it more , the heating & cooling will do that for you . Can try a little Marvel in the fuel too , to free them up quicker . Runs like a top though . Fixing the other things will give it time to clear itself out & get back to normal . She can breathe now , that will work wonders on an engine . Clean oil & high octane gas will clean it up .

Matt you really need to find a 32/36 pickup for a shop truck be it traditional or a little more modern so you have a good parts runner, to haul things. It would make life a lot sweeter. Love your builds, the truck could be letter with your shop name, that would be so cool !!!!!!

You could put some thick rubber under the clamps, cut from a side wall of a tire under the clamps to stop the vibrations. Put some seafoam into the crankcase to clean the rings and unstick them. Run it a while and around the block then drain it out and put in new oil.

As a retired parts pro, I have seen Sea Foam work well to dissolve gum and varnish in oil and fuel systems. Similar to Marvel, but it adds naptha and propanol to gets things moving. I have also seen Lucas oil treatment, really diminish smoking. Keep trying some of these, before giving up on that original flat head. Good luck, and keep it up!

  • @jackdedert2945

I mentioned a Seafoam treatment above. Pour it through the carb. Lots of smoke now to diminish a lot of ongoing smoke.

  • @gregkomendanchik8615

    @gregkomendanchik8615

    2 жыл бұрын

@@jackdedert2945 Sorry, I missed your comment. Sea Foam top side treatment is used to de-carbonize the upper cylinder on overhead valve engines. It could help un-stick rings, also if you slightly warm the engine, pour in half a can then turn off the engine. Start-up will definitely be smokey. I was thinking of adding a small amount to the motor oil. This is useful to free up rings. Run it for 30 minutes or so, and drain the oil to perform an effective flush. If the engine is truly worn out, then the Lucas may help minimize smoking.

And old engine that's sat for some years is probably going to smoke a bit when it's finally started back up. Just run it, keep an eye on the oil level and see if it clears itself up. Sure beats tearing one down unnecessarily. Yall are doing a great job on the car though!

  • @nferraro222

Maybe the little old lady drove at "little old lady speeds" for a decade and it's got five pounds of carbon in the ring grooves and intake/exhaust runners. I'd love to see a slightly warmed-over motor in there:) but how about throwing a Hail-Mary and filling it with some Marvel or Rislone and winding it up a couple of times? (well - as much as the valve springs can take, anyway). It is so nice (and strange) to see someone actually working on a Model A like a regular car.

Last winter when I put my 50 Mercury up, I filled the cylinders up with Marvel Mystery Oil, and let it soak for a month. It worked it's way past the rings into the pan. Worked very well. Just make sure there is nothing behind you when you start it up. You won't believe the carbon the engine spits out. Fresh oil change and you're good to go.

I’m sure the smoking will clear up, I had the same issue with a car I bought that was low milage but had sat for 10 years and smoked like crazy. Just kept running it and after a couple hundred miles it was fine. I think I put a couple bottles of STP through it though.

Matt enjoyed the ride, I was going to ask about the fuel gauge. My new to me 35 Tudor has the same system, there is red dye and it’s a hydrostatic fuel gauge. Only used between 32 & 35, mine is not working and hopefully you will give some insight on the repairs. The Early Ford V-8 Club of America has been a great resource, the dye that was used is called acetylene tetrabromide, and they do not make this anymore. I don’t think the little old Lady would like the exhaust note, she would have taken it to Midas. Not awful load for today’s hot rods.

The most amazing thing in this video to me was the fact that any brake locked up at all! My '36 5 window had perfectly functioning stock mechanical brakes on it when I got it, (which was in 1964 LOL) and they totally sucked at stopping that thing! Mine also had a Columbia 2 speed rear end originally, which worked fine, but the vacuum shifter was crap and I was never able to get it to work. Whenever you put that one of yours in something I can't wait to see how you shift it. I would certainly get quite a few hours run time on that long dormant engine to see if the rings free up, before doing anything serious. Great content!

Matt, you nailed that stance! Shows up really well now that it's had enough flexing to settle back in. I second the Marvel crowd, and the nice thing about MMO for Beautiful is that it's period correct! Invented in 1923! Do a video on the experiment - there are plenty on youtube already, but not on a car we know history on, like Beautiful. Pressure wash the underside before it gets too cold, and you can get a good idea of location of any other leaks so you can schedule them for fixin'. I admit I was freaking out seeing the grime on the tranny and rear springs, with visions of steam cleaners popping into my head! But that's my problem! not yours! 😉

Matt, an very old trick we used to do with the exhaust rattle was to get an old car tube and cut out 4 or 5 spacer washers and put them on the bolt between the chassis and the exhaust.. this would stop a great deal of the rattling noise under the car.. if needed we would just put a couple extra.. it because we could never buy the round spacers from the factory..

The music Mike chose during the welding phase is kinda what you'd hear at bars and clubs where 50's era hot rodders would be hanging out on Friday and Saturday nights their Bobby Soxer girls dancing with the boys and others shooting pool for a nickel or a dime a ball. What a COOL old car!!! You are doing a GREAT JOB fixing that old Ford up!! I have never worked on a flathead but valve stem seals cause smoking. Do flatheads have valve stem seals?? If so they are cheap!!!
